Anyone can don lederhosen or a Tyrolean-style dirndl and join the fun. Oktoberfest has been an important part of Bavarian culture since 1810, when the citizens of Munich were invited to celebrate the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig I (later King Ludwig I) and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen on the fields fronting the city gates. A fanatical art collector and museum supporter, Ludwig was also the principal patron behind many of Munich’s finest neoclassical buildings. With his passion for collecting, Ludwig surely would have appreciated this selection of German art and decorative objects chosen to commemorate the origins of Oktoberfest.
