LibraryThing: State of the Thing Dear {NAME}, Welcome to the June 2017 State of the Thing. Big news

LibraryThing: State of the Thing Dear {NAME}, Welcome to the June 2017 State of the Thing. Big news this month: our Android app is finally here! We're also headed to ALA later this week—maybe we'll see you there? If you'd rather receive a plain-text version, [edit your email preferences](. You can also [read it online](. Our State of the Thing archive lives [here](. You can like LibraryThing on [Facebook]( and follow [@LibraryThing]( on Twitter and [LibraryThing]() on Tumblr for up-to-the-minute site news and updates. LibraryThing Android App LibraryThing for Android—our first official Android app! [» Download it from Google Play]( Our Android app mirrors our [iPhone app](. Among other things, you can: - Browse and search your library overall and by collection. - Add books, CDs, and DVDs by scanning barcodes. Barcode scanning is SUPER FAST! - Add items by searching by title, author, ISBN, etc. - Browse and upload covers, using your device's camera. - Do minor editing, such as adding books to collections and rating them. Major editing is done via link to LibraryThing.com. in Action To showcase the app's cataloging power, I made a fun video of Alex and I cataloging our fiction collection in a matter of minutes. [Check it out!]( Free Accounts We're giving away free lifetime memberships to anyone who signs in to their existing LT account, or registers for a new account using either of our mobile apps. Sign in (or sign up!) and you'll be automatically upgraded. Details and Feedback Read the [blog post]( for details. The Android app has been a long time coming, and we thank you all for your patience. We're pretty happy with this initial version. More updates and features are coming a bit further down the line. While we currently have no plans to develop official app for other platforms, we are looking into making the app available in the Amazon app store. Tell us what you think on [Talk](! LibraryThing in Chicago! Abby and Tim are going to be at the American Library Association annual conference in Chicago from Friday to Monday (June 23-26). We'll be showing off [Syndetics Unbound](), a new catalog-enrichment product that we've co-developed with ProQuest. Members have organized a LibraryThing meetup on Saturday, June 24, at 7:00pm at the Haymarket Brewery. Everyone is invited—ALA people and not. There's more information on [Talk](. We also have free exhibits-only passes available, if you're in the Chicago area and want to wander around the ALA exhibit hall. The link to get your free pass is [here](. Abby and Tim are going to be hanging around the exhibit floor, especially at the ProQuest booth (#4011, or look for the giant "ProQuest" sign). LibraryThing doesn't have its own booth this year; we're doing so much with ProQuest. Lastly, library people might be interested in two Syndetics Unbound sessions we're doing at the Swissotel on Sunday afternoon. Basically, Tim's going to be demoing Syndetics Unbound and explaining why your library needs it very, very much. Space is limited, so [sign up soon](. TinyCat News Edition Webinar Last week, we partnered with NCompass Live at the Nebraska Library Commission for a special TinyCat showcase webinar. If you missed it, you can see the recording on their [YouTube channel](. Many thanks to NCompass Live for hosting us! Tiny Tutorials Check out our new video series, [Tiny Tutorials](. Every other week, Kristi highlights a different TinyCat feature, and walks you through how to use it in 30 seconds or less. This month, we've covered [How to customize your Home Page]( and [Simple Circulation mode](. Weekly Webinars We also offer free, weekly webinars giving an overview of TinyCat every Wednesday, at 1pm Eastern. Join us for our next one, next Wednesday, June 21st, at 1pm Eastern. Head over to [this link]( at that time, and look for the TinyCat Webinar. If Wednesday at 1pm doesn't work for you, let us know—we'll be happy to schedule a session for you. [TinyCat]() is the online catalog for small libraries, created by LibraryThing. It turns your existing LibraryThing account into a simple, professional, web-based catalog. We're here to answer your TinyCat questions via email at any time: [tinycat@librarything.com](mailto:tincyat@librarything.com). Stay tuned to our [Facebook]( and [Twitter]( pages for more announcements, or see a recorded webinar from July on our [YouTube Channel](. Free Books: Early Reviewers are not currently signed up for [LibraryThing's Early Reviewers]( program. You are missing out! Early Reviewers offers free books to members—about 100 titles a month! Since 2007, we've given out over 160,000 books. The catch? Publishers want your honest review. How you review a book won't help or hurt your chances of winning books in the future, but not reviewing your winning will. [» Sign up for Early Reviewers]( The June batch of [Early Reviewers]( books features 3,488 copies of 99 different titles. The deadline to request a free book is Monday, June 26th at 6pm, Eastern. Look for the July batch around the 3rd. The most requested books so far from the June batch: More free books: Member Giveaways any given time, there are hundreds of books available from our Member Giveaways program. It's like Early Reviewers, but isn't limited to select publishers—any author or member can post books. [Request books, or offer your own](! Hot titles this month - [Hillbilly Elegy]( by J.D. Vance - [The Underground Railroad]( by Colson Whitehead - [Commonwealth]( by Ann Patchett - [A Court of Thorns and Roses]( by Sarah J.
