LibraryThing: State of the Thing Dear {NAME}, Welcome to the November 2018 State of the Thing. It's SantaThing time once again—join us for bookish "Secret Santa!" Plus we've updated sharing to Facebook, links on author pages, and more. If you'd rather receive a plain-text version, [edit your email preferences](. You can also [read it online](. Our newsletter archive lives [here](. You can like LibraryThing on [Facebook]( and follow [@LibraryThing]( on Twitter for up-to-the-minute site news and updates. SantaThing—Bookish Secret Santa Now in it's 12th year, [SantaThing]( is our annual is "Secret Santa" for book lovers. You pay into the system, choose your favorite bookstore, and you receive surprise books, picked just for you by another LibraryThing member, in return. You get to pick books—in secret!—for someone else, too. [» Go sign up now!]( We're also inviting [Litsy]() members to join in SantaThing this year. If you have a Litsy account, you can link it with your LibraryThing account so your Secret Santa can see what you've stacked there, too. More on that below. Sign-ups close Wednesday, Nov. 28th, at 12pm EST. Elves will do the matching of Santas immediately after, and then you'll be able to start picking gifts. Books must be chosen no later than the following Thursday, Dec. 6th at 12pm EST. For details, see our [blog post](, and come join the discussion on [Talk](. Want to participate, but it's not in the budget this year? Help suggest books for other "Santees" by leaving comments on their SantaThing profiles [here](. We also have an annual [SantaThing Donations Thread](*. If you have any questions about SantaThing, please send them my way! * A HUGE "Thank you!" to our generous donors, and to LibraryThing member mellymel171328 for managing the Donations Thread for the sixth year running! Holiday card exchange LibraryThing's holiday card exchange is coming soon, but not until after SantaThing sign-ups close. Keep an eye out for a home page announcement, or stay tuned to the [Talk About LibraryThing group]( for that! New Features Facebook sharing update Sharing your reviews, book adds, and other LibraryThing activity got an overhaul! To test it out head over to [Your Feed]( and click the "Share this" link next to the action you'd like to share. Some of you might remember that, a couple months ago, we had to [temporarily disable sharing to Facebook](. This is because Facebook retired their previous publishing actions API, which meant LibraryThing developers had ot rebuild this feature entirely. Read all about what's new on [the blog](. Author links update The "Links" section on LibraryThing's author pages has been updated. [Check it out]( on Talk, or head over to any author page on LibraryThing to see it in action and add some new links yourself (here's [Terry Pratchett's](, for example). There are now categories for links, you can see link-editing history, and links are prioritized a bit differently. Account linking: Litsy and LibraryThing As mentioned above, we're inviting Litsy members to participate in SantaThing this year. To that end, we've taken the first steps in allowing members to link their Litsy and LibraryThing accounts. Currently, the focus is on signing up for SantaThing, but you'll be able to do more cool stuff with it later on. It's not required for LibraryThing members, but if you're doing SantaThing this year, it'll allow your Secret Santa to see what you've stacked on Litsy (if your Litsy profile is public), which can help them make good picks. - Go to [Link Accounts]( to get started. - Sign in to both Litsy and LibraryThing, and click to link your accounts. If you've already signed up for SantaThing, there's no need to click to sign up again. Talk of the Thing [Favorite holiday movies & LibraryThing Movie Night.]( What's your favorite holiday movie? Do you have any suggestions for a holiday-themed LibraryThing Movie Night? We'd love to see them on [Talk](. [What books make you feel hopeful?]( What books have made you feel hopeful or optimistic in reading them? Join the discussion (and get some recommendations!) on [Talk](. [Books that lived up to the hype?]( What books have you read that actually lived up to the hype surrounding them? Tell us on [Talk](. Free Books: Early Reviewers httsps://www.librarything.com/er/listYou are not currently signed up for [LibraryThing's Early Reviewers]( program. You are missing out! Early Reviewers offers free books to members—about 100 titles a month! Since 2007, we've given out over 160,000 books. The catch? Publishers want your honest review. [» Sign up for Early Reviewers]( The November batch of [Early Reviewers]( books features 4,515 copies of 99 different titles. The deadline to request a free book is Monday, Nov. 26th at 6pm, Eastern. Look for the December batch around the 3rd. The most requested books so far from the November batch: TinyCat News [TinyCat]() is the online catalog for small libraries, created by LibraryThing. It turns your existing LibraryThing account into a simple, professional, web-based catalog. Check out our [Tiny Tutorials]( and [LibraryThing for TinyCat Users]( series. Every other week, Kristi highlights a different feature, and walks you through how to use it in 30 seconds or less. Other Resources - Email us tinycat@librarything.com - Follow us on [Twitter]( - More tutorials on our [YouTube Channel]( Weekly Webinars We also offer free, weekly webinars giving an overview of TinyCat Wednesdays, at 1pm Eastern. Join us for our next one, Wednesday, Dec. 5th, at 1pm EST. Head over to [this link]( at that time, and look for the TinyCat Webinar. If Wednesday at 1pm doesn't work for you, let us know—we'll be happy to schedule a session for you. You can also see a pre-recorded webinar from November 2017 [here](.
