Early wallets were made primarily of cow or horse leather, including a small pouch for calling cards. The wallet is rooted in Ancient Greece, when it carried daily provisions and was closer in appearance to the modern backpack. The Greek mythical hero Perseus carried the head of Medusa in what has been typically translated as a “wallet.” In 19th century America, a wallet was used to carry dried meat, victuals and other treasures, in addition to currency. Meanwhile in Spain, a wallet was used as a case for smoking paraphernalia.  Today’s wallet featuring card slots was developed with the introduction of the first credit cards in the early 1950’s and pocket-sized wallets remain popular to this day. Styles include the bi fold, the trifold, the front pocket wallet, the money clip, the breast wallet to name a few. More recently, RFID-blocking lining was developed to protect personal information from hackers and of course many wallets double as phone cases. At Levenger we create and curate a variety of fine leather wallets and card cases, with tons of features to choose from. (no head-carrying versions, though!)
