I am drawn to work that is layered—visually or conceptually—that push the boundaries of traditional photography. I’m focused on projects that educate the viewer about a topic with artistic and conceptual integrity. I am less interested in the single image and prefer to look at a series of photographs that hold together as a cohesive project.   %2F%2Fsendy.lensculture.com%2Fl%2Fsl2ftBAWEkJn3feYTX38GA%2FMMPMWMFiPDskw9ZI2I6c763Q%2FC0xG2A763leUzikRtHAmB5Hg/5/0101018c3ab68c23-30b68c4b-26e9-47c2-9fa1-ad40b8c9e54b-000000/cL2y6s_uSt9EoabE8XO-mD1K6AY=351 VARUN NAYAR Aperture Art Photography 2024 Juror These boundaries of genre can be slippery. For me, the artfulness of a photograph, or series, has a lot to do with intention and context. Does it present a clear narrative or aesthetic position? Whether it’s in the choice of subject, reference material, technology, or approach, the strongest work––even a single image––stands out for its clarity of vision. I’m open to being surprised by all kinds of work this year, but one thing I often look for is specificity. […] I think it’s always useful to think of the framework(s) within which a certain photograph, or set of photographs, exists. I’m also hoping to see work from a greater range of regions, and beyond urban centers where, as we all know, photography institutions have a stronger presence.
