Cap Situation: The Cowboys are projected to be $7 million over the salary cap, but can free up space quickly with contract restructures. Needs: The Cowboys enter the offseason with major needs at receiver, cornerback, defensive tackle, and offensive guard. WR: If an aggressive move is made, it will likely be at receiver — given the team’s struggles behind CeeDee Lamb last season. WR Market: Odell Beckham Jr., JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Mecole Hardman highlight the 2023 free agent class. While DeAndre Hopkins, Brandin Cooks, and Keenan Allen are potential trade options. Image: Brian Rothmuller/Icon Sportswire OFF Cap [Tyler Boyd] Offensive Cap Casualty Candidates: Boyd, Henry, Higbee, Wentz, Golladay, Lewan Tyler Boyd: The Athletic’s Paul Dehner Jr. thinks the Bengals will [consider]( cutting Boyd, as the cap savings could be used to extend the likes of Joe Burrow and Tee Higgins. - Boyd’s 2022 output (58-762-5) was his lowest since 2017. Hunter Henry: The Patriots can save $10.5 million by cutting Henry. The 28-year-old saw his numbers (41-509-2) decline last season. Tyler Higbee: The Rams are certain to engage in cost-cutting measures this offseason, which makes Higbee a possible cut — even though the 30-year-old is coming off a solid season (72-620-2). Carson Wentz: Wentz is a lock to get cut by the Commanders. The 30-year-old will have to settle for backup work on the open market. Kenny Golladay: Like Wentz, Golladay is another inevitable cut. The 29-year-old will likely be limited to a prove-it deal. Taylor Lewan: Lewan has already acknowledged that the Titans are likely to [move on]( from him this offseason. The oft-injured 31-year-old is considering retirement. When healthy, he is an excellent left tackle. Image: Mark Alberti/Icon Sportswire DEF Cap [Frank Clark] Defensive Cap Casualty Candidates: Griffin, Clark, Thompson, Kendricks Shaquill Griffin: The Jaguars can [save]( over $13 million by cutting Griffin, who missed most of last season with a back injury. The 27-year-old has proven to be a solid starter when healthy and would attract interest on the open market. - Jacksonville can afford to move on from Griffin due to the emergence of 2021 second-rounder Tyson Campbell (82.11 PFF grade). Frank Clark: The Chiefs can save a whopping $21 million by cutting Clark, who ranked 83rd out of 130 edge rushers in pressure rate this past season. It’s possible the two sides agree to a pay cut. Shaq Thompson: The Panthers may look to move on from Thompson (72.3 PFF grade), who is heading into his age-29 season. A release would save $13.2 million. Eric Kendricks: The Vikings want to transform their defense, which could lead to the release of Kendicks, who struggled (46.4 coverage grade) last season. Cutting the soon-to-be 31-year-old would save $9.5 million against the cap. Image: William Purnell/Icon Sportswire Jeudy [Jerry Jeudy] Nick Kosmider does not think the Broncos will trade Jerry Jeudy Background: Denver reportedly [listened]( to offers for Jeudy at the trade deadline last fall, which has led to speculation that the team will consider moving him this spring. - With only five picks in the 2023 draft, the Broncos could use an infusion of draft capital. Strong Finish: Despite the buzz, Kosmider (The Athletic) thinks Jeudy’s [strong finish]( to the season will keep him in Denver for at least one more year. - Over the final six games of the season, Jeudy averaged an impressive 6.2 catches for 87.2 yards and 0.5 touchdowns. - He exploded for 193 scrimmage yards (154 receiving, 39 rushing) in the season finale. Payton: It will be interesting to see if Payton uses Jeudy in a Michael Thomas-style slot role. Image: Jeffrey Brown/Icon Sportswire Shepard [Sterling Shepard] Sterling Shepard's contract has been voided Details: The void was [built]( until Shepard’s contract and did not come as a surprise. The 30-year-old is free to sign with any team. Durability Issues: Over the last two years, Shepard has appeared in just 10 regular season games. He tore his Achilles in 2021 and his ACL in 2022. - In his last fully healthy season (2018), Shepard caught 66 passes for 872 yards and 4 touchdowns. Long Wait: Shepard may not get a contract offer until he passes a physical — which is likely 6-8 months away. WR Depth: The Giants will surely add to the receiver position this spring. Under-contract depth is virtually non-existent behind 2022 second-rounder Wan’Dale Robinson (23-227-1) and late-season breakout Isaiah Hodgins (33-351-4). Image: Kyle Ross/Icon Sportswire Coaching Updates [Dave Canales] Coaching Updates: Bucs hire an OC, Rex Ryan resurfaces Bucs: The Buccaneers have [hired]( Dave Canales to serve as their offensive coordinator. - Canales, 40, spent last season as the Seahawks' quarterbacks coach. He joined the Seattle staff in 2010. Geno: Canales oversaw Geno Smith’s resurgence in 2022. He will be tasked with developing 2021 second-rounder Kyle Trask in Tampa. Rex: According to NFL Network, Rex Ryan has emerged as a [top candidate]( for the Broncos’ defensive coordinator vacancy. - Ryan, 60, hasn't coached since 2016. - He has served as the head coach of the Jets (2009-2014) and the Bills (2015-2016). Wow: Across 12 seasons as a head coach and defensive coordinator, Ryan’s defenses have ranked in the top 10 in yards allowed nine times.
