Mahomes [Patrick Mahomes] Zakas: Patrick Mahomesâ injury risk is âincredibly highâ Details: Virginia Zakas, an injury expert for The Athletic, [writes]( that Mahomes is at ârisk of suffering a more severe injury such as an ankle fracture-dislocationâ if he plays through his high ankle sprain on Sunday against the Bengals. - An ankle fracture-dislocation is similar to the gruesome injury Dak Prescott suffered in October 2020. Other Risks: Zakas also writes that Mahomesâ high ankle sprain will lead to general instability, which increases his risk of suffering new injuries to different parts of his body. - Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a high ankle sprain in 2020, missed two weeks, and returned only to aggravate the injury and miss the remainder of the season. OK: Andy Reid told reporters on Monday that Mahomes is doing âOKâ and added that the MVP favorite wants to play against Cincinnati. On-Field Impact: If Mahomes does play, the injury will restrict his ability to make the off-schedule throws so much of his game is based around. - Mahomes did not attempt an outside-the-pocket pass after injuring his ankle against Jacksonville.
- Mahomes threw more passes from outside-the-pocket (113) than any other quarterback during the regular season.
- With Mahomesâ mobility squandered, the Bengals wonât need to waste a defender in the âspyâ role. Interesting: Adam Teicher (ESPN) thinks Mahomes will only get the [green light]( to play if he can exhibit the ability to avoid pass rush in practice this week. Chad Henne, who played well in relief of Mahomes, will start if Mahomes does not gain clearance. Image: Scott Winters/Icon Sportswire Brady [Tom Brady] Rapoport: Raiders, Titans, and maybe 49ers are options for Tom Brady Details: If Brady does not retire, Rapoport expects him to [end up]( on the Raiders, Titans, or 49ers. Done in TB: Rapoport does not think Brady will be returning to the Buccaneers. Edelman: Bradyâs former teammate, Julian Edleman, recently [said]( that Brady will seek out the team that gives him the best chance of winning another Super Bowl. Raiders: Las Vegas does make sense from the standpoint of coaching (familiarity with Josh McDaniels) and supporting cast (Davante Adams, Darren Waller, Hunter Renfrow). Though the Raidersâ defense is a far cry from Super Bowl caliber. Titans: The Titans can offer a top-tier defense and coaching familiarity (Mike Vrabel). Though a lack of pass-catchers could prove problematic. - Tennessee also seems like a potential fit for Aaron Rodgers. 49ers: If Brock Purdy leads the 49ers to the Super Bowl, it's hard to envision San Francisco pursuing Brady. Though the fit would be impeccable. Image: Cliff Welch/Icon Sportswire Cowboys [Dak Prescott] Jerry Jones backs Mike McCarthy and Dak Prescott McCarthy: Jones called the Cowboysâ season-ending loss to the 49ers âsickeningâ but said it didnât shake his confidence in McCarthy â who has led the Cowboys to two consecutive 12-win seasons. - With McCarthy in the clear, the Sean Payton-Dallas rumors can officially come to an end. Prescott: Jones more-or-less acknowledged that Dak Prescottâs struggles cost the Cowboys the game, but insisted that the 29-year-old quarterback remains the â[future](â of the organization. - Prescott â who tied for the league in interceptions during the regular season â threw two picks against the 49ers that had a direct impact on the crushing loss. Not Good: ESPNâs Dan Orlovsky did a film review after the game that showed Prescott missing a wide-open pass to T.Y. Hilton in the third quarter. - The clip, which has since gone viral, can be viewed [here](.
- Orlovsky indicated that Prescottâs field vision was an issue all season long. Image: Bob Kupbens/Icon Sportswire Bengals [Bengals offensive line] The Bengalsâ battered offensive line allowed just 1 sack against the Bills Background: The Bengals played the game with backups at left tackle (Jackson Carman), right guard (Max Scharping), and right tackle (Hakeem Adeniji). Results: The line [yielded]( just one sack (for 2 yards) and featured excellent run blocking â only one of the Bengalsâ 32 rush attempts lost yardage. - Joe Mixon ran for 105 yards and 1 touchdown on 20 carries. Redemption: Carman â a 2021 second-rounder who entered the game with a âbustâ label â earned the highest PFF pass-blocking grade on the team (76.0). He allowed only one QB hit and three pressures. Important: The Bengals probably would have won the Super Bowl last year with better pass protection, so the dominant performance bodes well for the teamâs postseason future. Image: Scott Winters/Icon Sportswire Hurts [Jalen Hurts] Jalen Hurts told Pam Oliver he is ânowhere near 100 percentâ Details: Ahead of Saturday nightâs Divisional Round playoff game, FOXâs Pam Oliver reported that Hurts â who is recovering from a sprained SC joint â [told]( her, âI am nowhere near 100%, but I just gotta go out there and still get it done.â Unbothered: Hurts didnât show any ill effects from the injury, completing an efficient 16-of-24 passes for 154 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions. One of his first passes was a [beautifully]( placed deep ball to DeVonta Smith. - Hurts also scored a rushing touchdown. Big Test: Hurts and the Eaglesâ offense will face their greatest test of the season on Sunday against a 49ersâ defense that just broke Dak Prescott. - San Francisco allowed the fewest yards and points during the regular season. History: Hurts and Brock Purdy had an epic showdown in Week 11 of the 2019 college football season. Hurts (Oklahoma) accounted for 341 yards and five touchdowns, while Purdy (Iowa State) accounted for 337 yards and six touchdowns. Hurtsâ Sooners prevailed 48-41. Image: Rich Graessle/Icon Sportswire Coaching Updates [Bill O'Brien] Coaching Updates: Patriots, Cardinals, Broncos, Chargers, Rams, Commanders, Fangio Patriots: Bill OâBrien has [agreed]( to become the Patriots' next OC. The 53-year-old spent the last two seasons in the same role at the University of Alabama. He was a Patriotsâ assistant coach from 2007-2011. Cardinals: The Cardinals have scheduled an interview with Sean Payton for this week. Arizona will also [meet]( with Cowboys DC Dan Quinn for the second time. Broncos: Sean Payton will take a second interview with the Broncos this week. If he passes on the job, expect Dan Quinn to be the target. Chargers: According to Albert Breer, Rams pass-game coordinator/QBs coach Zac Robinson is the [front-runner]( for the Chargers OC vacancy. Brandon Staley prefers a Sean McVay disciple for the role. Rams: The Rams are expected to nab former Jets OC Mike LaFleur for their OC vacancy. Commanders: Commanders QBs coach Ken Zampese appears likely to be promoted to OC. Fangio: Vic Fangio is a strong candidate for the DC openings in Atlanta and Miami. He could also be an option for the Eagles, if Jonathan Gannon gets a head coaching job.
