How can this protocol become more scalable? How can it achieve mainstream adoption? As the world’s 2nd crypto, increased usage & DApps have triggered slower, expensive transactions on Ethereum. This limitation is known as the “[blockchain trilemma]( the complexity of simultaneously balancing decentralization, security & scalability. To make crypto accessible to billions of users, Ethereum and the Blockchain ecosystem must solve this trilemma, that is, to process millions of transactions while safeguarding security & decentralization. [Several solutions]( have been suggested to scale Ethereum. Among them are bigger blocks, blocks per second, and side chains to reduce load. But they come with downsides: increased centralization & heightened security risks. That’s not the way to go. What if “sharding” was the right solution? This ingenious technique involves splitting the network into smaller sub-networks called shards, enabling parallel transaction processing & fewer transactions to manage. Sounds perfect, right? Well… think again. Sharding has its drawbacks, too. This scaling method makes it more challenging to define the overall consensus, more complex to implement cross-shard communication, and increases the probability of hacks. Rollups To The Rescue And what about rollups? They compress multiple transactions into one, enabling off-chain execution while safeguarding Eth’s security. Two main Rollups exist: Optimistic Rollups for users to issue fraud proofs in case of dispute, and ZK-Rollups where Layer 2s issue validity proofs. These Rollups will be vital in shaping the future of Ethereum, as they promise to enable trustless, permissionless and secure transactions at scale while safeguarding the “blockchain trilemma.” The recent shift in Ethereum's roadmap to support rollups at the protocol level is a testament to the credibility of this scaling technique. In the future, Ethereum & others Blockchains could see Layer-1s become settlement platforms & Layer-2s scalable protocols for DApps. This architecture will make Ethereum & Blockchains infinitely more scalable and put crypto in the hands of billions of people. Read the [full blog here](. [title] Happy BuyDay at Ledger!
