[BTC Illustration] Bitcoin just went through its biggest upgrade in four years, with many expected benefits - including privacy & programmability - for the world’s largest crypto network. Beyond technical considerations, how will Taproot impact the future of Bitcoin? What Taproot is all about For Bitcoin, Taproot improvements are multifold. The first one is anonymity. With Taproot, your keys have less chain exposure. A Bitcoin mining engineer, Brandon Arvanaghi, [said]( that with this upgrade, “you can kind of hide who you are a little bit better.” After all, isn’t Bitcoin’s main value proposition to avoid surveillance from third-parties? Beyond privacy, Taproot also is a game-changer for something still underexploited: smart contracts. In this field, Bitcoin lags far behind its younger sister, Ethereum. But Taproot could help Bitcoin catch up a little with cheaper and more flexible transactions, as well as smaller in terms of blockchain space they occupy. Ultimately, these new properties could set the stage for a new wave of tech progress on the world’s largest crypto network. It could open the door for many to build DApps, smart contracts and NFTs on top of the decentralized protocol. “Taproot matters, because it opens a breadth of opportunity for entrepreneurs interested in expanding bitcoin’s utility,” [said Alyse Kileen]( founder of Bitcoin venture firm Stillmark. Sounds promising, right? Unlocking Bitcoin’s full potential? Let’s not get excited too quickly. [Bitcoin’s price fell 10%]( in the days following Taproot, triggering calls that it has failed to live up to expectations. So… what happened? Has the upgrade been overestimated? Probably yes, at least in the short-term. But let’s not underestimate the medium-term, as Taproot lays a new groundwork for entrepreneurs to work on. Among them, Square’s CEO Jack Dorsey is the world's most popular entrepreneur pushing for greater Bitcoin use cases. He announced he would use DeFi services with a Bitcoin DEX, with the [goal]( of making Bitcoin “the native currency for the internet”. Bitcoin is known as “digital gold,” but in fact, it’s much more than a new store of value. Thanks to its upgradable nature, Bitcoin can adapt over time and ultimately become a global, programmable and decentralized digital payment system. Let’s see how it goes.
