'Chouette' by Claire Oshetsky You ever read a book and have a deep sense of empathy (and sorrow) for the main character? The protagonist, Tiny, knows that when she gives birth it'll be to an "owl-child." Everyone around her is deeply in denial, even after baby owl Chouette makes her way into the world. It takes some time, but Tiny eventually learns to adapt to her "owl-baby." But everyone wants to change her. Fancy reform schools? Check. Countless doctor's appointments? Check. It's a heavy-handed metaphor for raising a child deemed "different." I loved this author's writing style so much that before I finished with "Chouette," I bought Oshetsky's next book, "Poor Deer."
