Sudan Archives, also known as Brittney Denise Parks, performs on day two of the Lollapalooza Music Festival on Friday, Aug. 4, 2023, at Grant Park in Chicago. (Photo by Amy Harris/Invision/AP) 'Selfish Soul' by Sudan Archives You ever listen to a song for the first time and you just know it's going to top your Spotify Unwrapped list at the end of the year? This is how I felt about Sudan Archives' "Selfish Soul." It's incredibly catchy, and I often find myself gravitating towards songs with relatively repetitive, electronic-inspired beats (think of artists like LCD Soundsystem, Young Fathers, Parquet Courts). But under the song's immensely catchy sound is an interesting commentary on how Black women are treated about their hair. Most of the song is made up of the singer questioning if people will still like her if she grows her hair out, or if she leaves it curly versus straightening it. "Stay hair, stay straight, though we feel ashamed / By the curls, waves and natural things ... Okay, one time, if I grow it long / Am I good enough? Am I good enough?" I wouldn't be surprised if one of her albums turns up in a future "What I'm loving this week" section of this newsletter. Did we spot you?
