[LaineyGossip.com - Calling all smuthounds!] Wednesday, August 16, 2017 [Intro for August 16, 2017]( [Rihanna]( Dear Gossips, PEOPLE.com [posted an article]( last night about Chris Brown and what he says about the night he beat the sh-t out of Rihanna. I read it just as I was about to go to sleep. And then I couldn’t sleep so, like a good friend, I sent it to Duana so that she couldn’t sleep either. Basically Chris says that Rihanna was always a jealous girlfriend because she found out that he had sex with someone before they got together and from then on, her trust issues undermined their love. “She hated me after that. I tried everything, she didn’t care. She just didn’t trust me after that. From there, it just went downhill because there were too many verbal fights, physical fights as well. Mutual sides.” MUTUAL SIDES? Interesting choice of words. Who does that remind you of? Mutual sides, “many sides”. F-CK YOU and all your sides. From there, everything he says, every sentence begins with how she supposedly used to hit him first. How she was drinking on the night he attacked her. How she tried to kick him. How she pretended to throw the keys out the car. How she spit in his face. And how terrible he feels whenever he sees the photo. Really? Because you’ve seen the photo, right? We all saw that goddamn photo. PEOPLE.com does not show us the photo. Instead, what we get from PEOPLE.com is Chris’s memory of detail upon detail about how Rihanna was jealous, how Rihanna was violent, and Chris is sorry. And there’s a photo. But not that photo. The photo they do include to accompany story that looks like this: You read the article, presented to us from Chris Brown’s side, about how Rihanna was petty and vindictive, juxtaposed with his “remorse”, and then they throw up a picture of them together (which wasn’t even taken the night of the beating) and you see her wearing attitude on her face – while he’s sitting there in a WHITE SUIT – and what, exactly, are you trying to say, PEOPLE MAGAZINE? What the F-CK are you trying to say? What the F-CK are you telling the MiniVan Majority? Is the takeaway here supposed to be that, “Oh, Chris Brown, he’s not so bad. Rihanna was to blame too”? Since when did anyone need PEOPLE Magazine to come out for Team Breezy? Why is PEOPLE Magazine sanitising Chris Brown? What are they telling women who might be out there struggling in abusive situations and barely surviving? I am tempted to remind you, visually, of what Chris Brown did and attach to this post the photo that he describes as “that’s not me”. This is probably not a good idea. So instead, I’m attaching a different photo of Rihanna, one that [she posted herself](. This is Rihanna, waving away the bullsh-t. Because humanising an abusive man shouldn’t be the story here. The story here should be about how this woman came through it. The story here should be that if this is your story, if this has been your experience, you can come through it too. There are people who can help you. If you are a victim of domestic violence or if anyone you know is being abused, please contact the [National Coalition Against Domestic Violence]( and/or [Shelter Safe]( in Canada. Yours in gossip, Lainey [Click here for the rest of the photos.]( Posted at 1:38 PM [But what about Henry Cavill’s mustache?]( [Tom Cruise on the set of M:I6 just before ankle injury ]( We all saw [Tom Cruise]( [bounce off that building]( over the weekend while filming a stunt for Mission: Impossible 6 – Cruise Control—HOW IS THIS NOT THE REAL TITLE—and try to walk it off. But it doesn’t sound like he’s been able to, as now it’s being reported that production is being shut down for several weeks while Cruise recuperates from, possibly, a foot/ankle injury. Not an unfamiliar story—Iron Man 3 shut down after RDJ hurt his ankle during a stunt, and then there was the time the Millennium Falcon [tried to kill Harrison Ford](. (And, on a more seriously note, a stunt went wrong on the set of Deadpool 2 that [ended]( [in tragedy](.) Deadline speculates that M:I 6 might shove off its July 2018 release date because of this, but Tom Cruise will want to minimize this incident as much as possible in order to preserve the illusion that he’s invincible, so I’ll be surprised if that actually comes to pass. Seems more likely they’ll just rearrange the production schedule as best they can to work without him for a while. In fact, Chris McQuarrie just tweeted this: Thank you all for your support and concern. Tom is on the mend and MI6 is on track for 07.27.2018 — ChristopherMcQuarrie (@chrismcquarrie) [August 16, 2017]( But the really important question we have to ask, in the wake of this news, is WHAT ABOUT HENRY CAVILL’S MUSTACHE? In case you missed it, [Henry Cavill]( is co-starring in M:I 6, in which he has a mustache. He is also simultaneously doing the Justice League reshoots, in which Superman does not have facial hair. This led to Paramount and Warner Brothers fighting over Henry Cavill’s mustache, with Warners resigning themselves to digitally erasing the mustache from Superman, because for some reason, a fake mustache wouldn’t suffice in a movie about people who routinely wear elaborate fake faces. (This is my favorite movie story of the summer.) So with production on M:I 6 at a standstill, does this mean Henry Cavill can shave? Can he be-smooth himself for the remainder of the Justice League photography, then re-grow to finish M:I 6? Or will he be forced to maintain the mustache, regardless? Will he, perhaps, be called upon to stroke his luxurious whiskers upon Tom Cruise’s ankle, to speed the recovery of the wounded star? He better be—that mustache better be f*cking magical for a studio to pay untold dollars to digitally erase it. So when I saw [Justin](S(dxsqo055eb3s1155v45qk255))/Justin-Bieber/Celebrity/20956)’s Instagram post, I was like, OK. I see you. He tagged Shawn Mendes incorrectly, first with a z. That, maybe, could have been a typo as it was quickly fixed. The next try was @shawmendes, missing the n. Still didn’t work. That stayed up a really long time, but was eventually fixed. Typo or boy sh-t? Take your pick. We’ve talked about her underrated style many times before and this is a really good reflection of how versatile she is. There's a variety of cuts that can be worn together – a drawstring crop sweater with high-waisted pants, a kimono shirt with a pencil skirt, a body-con dress with a trench. Gabrielle knows how to put an outfit together. Obviously [it’s not Rodarte](, but it is $65 for a pair of work-appropriate harem pants. [Don’t think I’ll be able to sleep tonight!!! She was on The Today Show this morning to promote the movie. I’ve included the video below but… not going to lie… Katie’s not the most compelling interview. At one point Matt Lauer asks her to talk about why she likes heist movies. Her explanation was that heist movies are “fantasy” and “so entertaining”. I am curious about Katie in Logan Lucky though. It’s been a while since Katie’s been in a project with some hype. No shade. Just that, professionally at least, in the last decade or so, the work hasn’t been the focus. If you recall, before she and Tom Cruise happened, Katie Holmes was considered by some to be in the same conversation as the Natalie Portmans and the Michelle Williamses. All it takes is one role sometimes. Can we talk about her outfit now? Usually Katie Holmes + jumpsuit brings on heinous flashbacks: It’s because she used to design her own clothes. This jumpsuit though? SO good. The zipper detail. SO good. And her makeup? SO good. Then they saw Girls Trip and became obsessed with her. Last night she was on with Colbert. And, I mean, at the end of this year, when everyone puts together their Best Of lists, and their Breakout lists, Tiffany Haddish has to be on both, non? Tiffany is currently doing press in support of her very first standup special on Showtime, [She Ready! From The Hood To Hollywood](, premiering on Friday. Tiffany’s been candid about her upbringing, how her mother struggled with mental health, her experience in foster care, that she was homeless for a while, and like many artists before her, somehow she found humour amidst the trauma. Amazingly she’s found a platform to share it. At 37 years old, Tiffany Haddish is getting the opportunities to show us what she’s been working on all these years. That said, she’s made some mistakes. Tiffany recently apologised for a [tasteless Bill Cosby joke]( she made during an interview. It was a dumbass thing to say. It was totally offside. And she quickly saw just how loud her voice has become – and how far it will carry. Does that mean we have to delete her though? Sarah Silverman comes to mind for me. When Sarah was promoting her latest standup special on Netflix, A Speck Of Dust, last month, she talked to Vanity Fair’s Krista Smith about how jokes are not evergreen, how there are things she used to say in her routines that she does not and cannot say now, how she has learned find the line and the language between funny and unforgivable. Sarah Silverman has had the experience though. Not just experience working comedy clubs because Tiffany Haddish has had that too. But also the experience of being famous a lot longer and a lot sooner than Tiffany Haddish, and at a time before everyone had a camera on their phone. Sarah f-cked up too. Sarah’s f-cked up a lot. And Sarah’s still around. We did not delete Sarah. God, we could never delete Sarah. So, again, do we delete Tiffany? I can’t delete her. Watch this, watch her on Colbert – who is utterly delighted by her – and tell me if you can delete her. She’s one of those people who just looking at their face it makes you smile and feel something good. Tiffany Haddish is becoming one of the best talk show guests in the business. Have you seen Girls Trip yet? I’ve only seen it once. Why have I only seen it once?!? Last night he made an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and definitively answered the question that everyone’s been asking him. Will he return as James Bond, 007? This was his response: TONIGHT: Daniel Craig makes an announcement that will leave you shaken, not stirred. [#JamesBond]( [#LSSC]( [pic.twitter.com/gaSgVs3LkN]( — The Late Show (@colbertlateshow) [August 16, 2017]( Daniel Craig will be back for Bond 25. And it’s a Colbert exclusive. Colbert is king at CBS right now. Daniel went on to talk about why he had previously said that he didn’t want to be Bond anymore. Because when he made those remarks it was right after he’d wrapped on Spectre and he was tired and cranky and, in his words, he said a “stupid” thing. Which he was not about to do again with Colbert, who tried to compare the experience to childbirth and Daniel was like… nope, not doing that, not the same thing. Later on, they joke about Colbert’s crush on Rachel Weisz. Daniel Craig talks about Rachel Weisz. He rarely talks about Rachel Weisz. Well, he rarely talks. Like it’s not often we get a Daniel Craig interview. So, not that you doubted, but it’s all fine between Daniel and Rachel. It may not, however, be fine for those who’ve been hoping for an Idris Elba Bond situation. Idris Elba will not be Bond, not even after Daniel. Idris is 45 next month. By the time they get around to Bond 26, he’ll be close to 50. Which isn’t old, obviously, but considering that you commit to Bond for at least a decade, it’s probably more realistic for those in charge of the franchise to look for someone younger, in their 30s. (As Tom Hiddleston – once again, as always – shoots his hand into the air.) [Click here for the rest of the photos.]( Posted at 3:19 PM [Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen in Wind River]( [Elizabeth Olsen out in New York, August 8, 2017]( Following his Oscar nomination for Hell or High Water, actor-turned-screenwriter Taylor Sheridan takes on directing as well with Wind River (technically his sophomore directorial effort, following a 2011 horror movie called Vile). Between Sicario and High Water, Sheridan has a proven knack for setting and dialogue, and creating tense stand-off scenarios and morally compromising situations. Wind River is more of the same, with Sheridan’s flawless sense of place, though the morals here are much less dubious—there are very clear good guys and bad guys. Set on the Wind River reservation in Wyoming, Wind River is a little bit culture shock, a little bit culture clash, and a heaping serving of wilderness and cruel men. Cory Lambert ([Jeremy Renner]() is a Fish & Wildlife officer responsible for hunting predators that prey on livestock. While tracking a blatantly allegorical mountain lion, Cory finds the body of a young woman, frozen and obviously brutalized, on the Wind River reservation. Renner first came to notice for his combination of tough guy posturing and latent sensitivity, and Wind River is the first movie in a long time to bring back that sensitive quality of his, and the result is his best performance since The Hurt Locker. He has lots to do—besides seeking revenge for his best friend’s daughter, his own daughter died a few years earlier, and Renner makes the most of Cory’s grief by doing very little. It is truly an excellent performance. There’s just one problem: Cory Lambert shouldn’t be the protagonist. Sheridan handles the cultural stew of life on the boundaries of a reservation with aplomb. It would be easy to turn scenes from the reservation into straight misery porn, but Sheridan doesn’t linger and so he doesn’t exploit. Poverty, drug abuse, endemic hopelessness—it’s all grounded in character-driven interaction, so that the people emerge over the circumstance. He has the right instinct on how to portray rez life as an outsider. Unfortunately, his instincts fail him when it comes to whose story he’s really telling. Cory is the protagonist, with green FBI Agent Jane Banner ([Elizabeth Olsen](, rising above thin material), and tribal police chief Ben (Graham Greene, always excellent) along for the ride. But a title card at the end of the film would have you believe that Wind River is really about the murder victim, Natalie (Kelsey Asbille). Wind River is not about Natalie. Wind River is about Cory, kinda-sorta about Martin (Gil Birmingham), Natalie’s dad, and maybe a little about Agent Banner, serving as the audience surrogate entering this little-seen world of reservations. Wind River SHOULD have been about Natalie. Or maybe Martin. But definitely not Cory. It’s partly a problem of optics, that it is weird to have a white guy at the center of a story that revolves around the reservation and what happened to a young woman from the reservation. But it’s mostly a problem of story, that Natalie’s story raises far more questions than Cory’s. Cory’s story is a straightforward revenge fantasy with a side of repressed masculine grief. Natalie’s story, as it stands, is reduced to a murder mystery, but on the edges of that mystery is a bigger and more intriguing drama about a woman trying to escape an environment that is actively hostile to her, and what choices she makes and what (few) opportunities she has to make them. And if the story is Natalie’s, that coda about Native women is fully justified and an even sharper audience gut-punch. For what it is—a procedural thriller—Wind River is above average. Sheridan has a knack for noir and Western, and a flare for staging nail-biting stand-offs. As a director, his eye isn’t bad but it’s not wholly formed yet, so Wind River is overall pleasing to look at but not quite as grand as it could have been, taking place largely among the remote fastness of the surviving American West. And he is interested in looking into corners of the American experience few bother exploring. But Sheridan misjudged the protagonist of this story, and so Wind River has a slightly aimless quality to it, with an extended Natalie flashback interrupting Cory’s relatively spare narrative. It doesn’t hurt the film that is too much, but it does tease us with the better film that could have been. Attached - Elizabeth Olsen making the promotional rounds in New York last week.
