[Intro for August 15, 2017](
[Elisabeth Moss attends the FYC event for Hulu's 'The Handmaid's Tale' at the DGA Theater on August 14, 2017 in Los Angeles, California](
Dear Gossips,
The Emmys are 5 weeks away. Emmy voting began yesterday and ends August 28th so this, right now, is when campaigning is at its most intense. As previously reported, they’re now spending as much [on Emmy campaigns as the Oscars]( and it’s an especially competitive year in the Outstanding Drama Series category with Game Of Thrones out of the picture.
Yesterday the producers and cast of The Handmaid’s Tale attended a For Your Consideration event in LA. The Handmaid’s Tale is one of the most acclaimed shows this season with 13 nominations, the first Hulu series to really break through at the Emmys. Everyone was talking about The Handmaid’s Tale – online and also within Hollywood. However, as [The Hollywood Reporter noted]( yesterday:
But is the TV Academy truly ready to crown a streaming show the best of the best? It has been five years since Netflix first broke into the awards conversation, but even the behemoth of streamers has yet to win one of the big prizes. Naming a Hulu show best drama may be too big of a leap for some.
By that argument then, House Of Cards, The Crown, and Stranger Things would also be too big of a leap. Of the 7 nominees for Drama Series, 4 are from streaming services, Better Call Saul and Westworld are on cable, and This Is Us is the only show that reps a major network. It’s a tight fight right now. Expert predictions are [all over the place]( so there’s really no clear frontrunner. Elisabeth Moss, however, is definitely the frontrunner in the Best Drama Actress category. Did you know that Elisabeth Moss has never won an Emmy? Even though they call her the [Queen of Peak TV](, she’s been 0 for 6 coming into this season. This is her 7th nomination and she told the [New York Times]( this weekend that she doesn’t “feel much pressure at all. You’re just excited to be invited to the party, especially with a new show that was pretty risky”.
True. But she also produced this risky show. As the Queen of Peak TV she’s never been more involved on a show than she was on The Handmaid’s Tale. Winning for this one would probably be what she’s been waiting for? Which is also why she’s covering all the bases. Remember, a few months ago, around the time show premiered, Elisabeth made headlines for saying, at first, that The Handmaid’s Tale was not a feminist story? When asked about her remarks by the [New York Times]( Elisabeth was ready with her response:
“That was my mistake in the sense that I should have been much clearer. What I should have said is that it is not only a feminist story but it is also a human story. Obviously it is first and foremost a feminist story. I play a woman who has had her child and her family taken away from her, and all of her rights as a woman stripped and who is essentially a prisoner. But I was trying to say that it was also a human story in the sense that there are other groups — other races, colors and creeds — who are punished and maligned and are not given the right to be heard as well.”
So. Is Elisabeth Moss a lock? The only other person who might challenge her would be The Crown’s Claire Foy. The television academy LOVES a British accent. This explains why they kept awarding Downton Abbey long after the show had passed its prime.
Yours in gossip,
Lainey

[Taylor wins a $1, earns a lot more](
[Taylor Swift ](
The jury did not take long to find in favour of [Taylor Swift]( yesterday. Former DJ David Mueller claimed that she cost him his job and reputation. She countersued him for groping her ass. The court believed her and has ordered him to pay her $1, which is all she was asking for financially. For her, it was about the message.
Taylor is the leadoff story on [this week’s episode of our Show Your Work]( podcast. Duana and I talked about how Taylor prepared for the trial, from the specific language that she and her mother used to talk about the incident (“he grabbed my ASS” – not butt, not rear end, not bum, but ASS) to how she retreated from the public eye for months ahead of time, all of by design to create the best possible conditions for her to win this trial. And of course, yes, with her wealth and her whiteness, she was in the best position any woman could be in to win the trial. But you’ll note, even during closing statements, David Mueller’s attorney still tried to question why Taylor was smiling in the photograph where his hand was very clearly by her ass area, still tried to tell the jury that a woman who was sexually assaulted wouldn’t be smiling because, again, there’s only one way for a woman’s face to look when she’s been sexually assaulted – and a man would know it, right?
In Taylor’s case, that line of questioning didn’t work. Because the jury obviously didn’t find David Mueller credible. The jury believed Taylor. This kind of strategy, however, has worked against many other women though. And that, as I wrote [last week]( is most certainly Taylor’s privilege. It’s a privilege she herself acknowledged in the statement she released following the judgment:
"I want to thank Judge William J. Martinez and the jury for their careful consideration, my attorneys Doug Baldridge, Danielle Foley, Jay Schaudies and Katie Wright for fighting for me and anyone who feels silenced by a sexual assault, and especially anyone who offered their support throughout this four-year ordeal and two-year long trial process.
I acknowledge the privilege that I benefit from in life, in society and in my ability to shoulder the enormous cost of defending myself in a trial like this. My hope is to help those whose voices should also be heard. Therefore, I will be making donations in the near future to multiple organizations that help sexual assault victims defend themselves."
In life, in society, and in my ability to shoulder the cost…
That’s a lot of privilege. Has Taylor Swift ever identified her own privilege? What’s next, now that she has? Over and above the donation, I mean. Taylor Swift, in comparison to other stars at her level, has been largely apolitical. She’s now just fought back in court against a man who grabbed her by the ass. You think she might have something to say about a man who [grabs women by the pussy](
Taylor was not seen after the trial. She managed to make it through the trial without being photographed. Before the verdict was announced, if the jury found in her favour, I was kind of expecting her to show up outside the courthouse, to speak righteously about why she decided to fight and what she was fighting for. That didn’t happen. It would have been a spectacle and Taylor Swift avoided the spectacle – another good decision even though, come on, you know, you know she would have enjoyed that moment, those are the moments celebrities live for. But Taylor continues to work that muscle, a new muscle she’s been developing over the past year. It’s the restraint muscle. It’s the quiet muscle. It’s the mystery muscle. It’s a muscle that many people in her position are incapable of building. But it’s a muscle you need to really set the stage for a new era. Who is Taylor Swift in the new era?

Where does one go from a lunch like this? Every other major event in life would be a complete letdown in comparison. Did Andrew and Jon text each other afterwards, like “Do you believe this happened?!” And how many times can “I was having lunch with Patti and Glenn” be dropped casually into conversation?
[The best night of my life? Quite possibly.](

I love this SO much. I have a question, though. Can fellow nominees accept awards for absentee winners? Just thinking of recent award shows and usually it’s the presenter who accepts on the absent person’s behalf, unless the winner is deceased. Is that etiquette or a rule?
I ⤠this: Jackie Hoffman calling all the other nominees & offering to accept the Emmy if they win ala Joan Crawford.

Are you a fan of James Woods’s work? I thought he was great in Casino, especially opposite Sharon Stone. On Twitter, I find him terrifying. And chillingly humourless. So yesterday when he posted about #liberals and statutes, Twitter took turns mocking him – see [all the great ones here](. Is he going [to try to sue everyone]( now?

[Jessica Chastainâs Game](
[Molly's Game trailer stills ](
[Jessica Chastain]( does not have an Oscar. I have to double-check this CONSTANTLY. Because it seems like she should have one, yes? Surely she won for The Help? No? Well then she HAD to have gotten one for Zero Dark Thirty. Also no. She has not yet recorded a W at the Academy Awards, which seems impossible when you consider the level of work she consistently turns out. (In this, the HFPA has one over on the Academy, because they consistently recognize Chastain’s excellence, and they have rewarded it.) But maybe this will be her year, as she has a flashy role in Aaron Sorkin’s directorial debut, Molly’s Game. Chastain plays Molly Bloom, who ran that lavish underground poker game that Ben Affleck played in and where Tobey Maguire [was such a f*cking douchebag](.
The trailer for Molly’s Game has just come out, and man does Jessica Chastain have a first-class power-suit strut. And man, does she have chemistry with [Idris Elba](. He plays her defense lawyer and based on the sharpness of their exchanges I’m expecting some Shondaland-style office boning to immediately ensue. I don’t think that’s what they’re trying to accomplish in Molly’s Game, but that’s the vibe I’m getting from Elba and Chastain and now I desperately want to see them in a romantic movie together. Anyway.
I’m not super impressed by the trailer itself—this is a JUICY story and the trailer is going out of its way to be conventional and court-room drama-ish, and barely glancing at the overripe peach of gossip-juice that comes with Molly’s rags-to-riches poker story. [Michael Cera]( seems to be playing Tobey Maguire, WHICH I LOVE, but if you don’t already know Molly’s story, do you pick up on that? They’ve changed everyone’s names—even the Viper Room has become the “Cobra Lounge”—but still, there’s got to be some clues as to who is whom in the real-world context. None of that is in the trailer. That’s the best part of the story!
But Chastain does command the screen so well, and she plays schemers so well (see also: A Most Violent Year), that it still looks entirely watchable. Molly’s Game has just been added to the TIFF lineup, so it’s in position for award season. And maybe that’s the issue with the gossip angle. Maybe they don’t want to go too hard on the very people they’re going to ask to vote for this movie for the industry’s most prestigious award. After all, Molly had some of Hollywood’s biggest players at her tables, and her story is their story, too. It will be interesting to see if Sorkin pulls his punches because he doesn’t want to get shut out of the party himself.

[Mindy Kaling on her pregnancy](
[Mindy Kaling has dinner at Madeo in LA, August 8, 2017](
[Mindy Kaling]( is pregnant. But she hasn’t confirmed it herself. [E!]( was the first to report the news last month and Duana discussed the peculiar wording of the announcement on [Show Your Work]( since it was immediately followed by “don’t worry, she’ll still be able to meet all her deadlines and there will be no production delays”. Then it was Oprah who let us know [a couple of weeks ago]( that Mindy was actually 5 months pregnant at D23. As I mentioned on the podcast though, while Mindy’s pregnancy might have been “an unexpected surprise”, it was not a surprise then that it was E! that broke the news.
Mindy’s development deal is with NBCUniversal. The E! network is also part of NBCUniversal. And Mindy is confirming the pregnancy herself for the first time on [TODAY]( which, of course, is on NBC. During an interview on Sunday TODAY, Willie Geist asked about “the prospect of motherhood”.
She’s “really excited”. Which is the headline making the rounds right now. Which is one of those pregnancy headlines that I always react to by asking how this is a headline. Anyway, Mindy is currently promoting the final season of The Mindy Project, premiering September 12.

[The Year of Superheroines](
[Silver Sable and Black Cat](
Spider-Man: Homecoming is a hit for Sony this summer—and Marvel, who gets the merchandise profits—and they are moving full steam ahead with their own cinematic universe (which they are foolishly not calling the “Spider-Verse”). They’ve already got Tom Hardy lined up to star in a [Venom spin-off](, and have [recently added]( Riz Ahmed as well, and they also have a second film in the works, a female-led project called Silver and Black. That movie will be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Beyond the Lights, Love & Basketball), which is BY FAR the most exciting thing about it.
Silver and Black will follow Silver Sablinova, AKA Silver Sable, a CEO-by-day, mercenary-by-night, and Felicia Hardy, AKA Black Cat, who was once played by Felicity Jones in Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man movies. As the name suggests, Black Cat is a straight up Catwoman knock-off, a sometimes-ally, sometimes-foe of Peter Parker’s. Silver Sable occupies the same grey area, but both characters will have to do without Spider-Man for a few years, as Sony’s spin-off movies won’t cross-over with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. (At least officially, producer Amy Pascal doesn’t seem as committed to that separation, much to [Kevin Feige’s surprise](
Presumably, Silver Sable and Black Cat will be adults, and not children like Spider-Man. If this is the case, I propose Tatiana Maslany and Ruth Negga for Silver Sable and Black Cat, respectively. Maslany is recently freed from her Orphan Black schedule, so now is the time for a franchise to snap her up, and Negga is basically the Platonic ideal of an actress who should play a witty thief. Negga is already struck from the Marvel Cinematic Universe—she was on Agents of SHIELD—but since Sony is technically disconnected from the MCU outside of Peter Parker, they can cast her free and clear. And then it can be Marvel’s mistake, wasting her on a TV show no one watches.
Silver and Black is slated for February 2019. Captain Marvel is due in March 2019. And Wonder Woman 2 has been scheduled for December 2019. That means that 2019 is the Year of the Superheroines, with three headlining superheroine movies, at least two of which will be directed or co-directed by a woman—Captain Marvel is from duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. (Patty Jenkins still isn’t signed on for Wonder Woman 2, though Warners is negotiating with her.) Some will insist that “there can be only one” and not all of these movies will pan out, but at least they’ll each get a shot. There are multiple superhero movies every year and not all of them are expected to succeed, but that doesn’t stop six more superhero movies coming out the next year. In 2019, we’ll finally get to have multiple female-led superhero movies, and a true test of equality will be if one is allowed to fail without slowing down the others.

[Leoâs new bonafide?](
[Leonardo DiCaprio/Lorena Rae](
Sarah [posted yesterday]( about the totally unimaginative decision to cast [Leonardo DiCaprio]( as Leonardo da Vinci. It’s going to be a while though. The book on which the film is based will be released in October. The deal that we all heard about yesterday was about acquiring the book rights. There’s been no talk about who’s writing the adaptation. So it’ll be months, if that, before Leo’s even on set. And that’s generous. Speaking of Leo being on set, it’s been almost two years since he’s been on set. The last film he worked on was The Revenant. And he put so much of himself in that role, he struggled so much for that character, he was so cold making that movie, not to mention all that business with the bear, that he’s needed all this time for himself. As we’ve seen, Leo has spent a lot of that time on yachts and at parties, surrounded by models. Well that’s totally new.
What’s also new is that, a few months after breaking up with Nina Agdal, he’s apparently ready to start auditioning girlfriends. Her name is Lorena Rae. Guess what her job is. No, really, guess. OK, don’t guess. There’s no point. Because of course she’s a model. And of course she’s 23 years old. This is Lorena:
[... coming for you #Tulum ð´ðð¦ first time - so excited!](
A post shared by Lorena Rae (@lorenara__) on
Jul 20, 2017 at 4:41pm PDT
According to [Page Six](:
On Monday, the “Great Gatsby” actor was seen with Rae and a male pal having lunch at Hillstone on Park Avenue, where, a spy tells us, “they seem like an item,” and, “They walked out together, he pulled down his hat over his eyes.”
A witness also spotted them at MoMA PS1 on Monday, from which she posted photos on Instagram.
Rae was also seen Citi Biking with DiCaprio and his crew last week, but sources say the pair has known one another for a while.
Rae was also pictured hanging out with DiCaprio and his entourage in Monaco at the end of May. Rae also appeared in July aboard a yacht in photos with DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and pals in St-Tropez. A rep for DiCaprio insisted, “They’re not dating.”
It should be pointed out that every blond model Leo’s been with in the past few years has been referred to as “a friend.” Until she’s not.
When Leo and Nina broke up, it was just in time for summer. Single for the summer. Lorena’s timing is sh-tty then because summer’s not over and Leo still has another few weeks to go before he decides whether or not he wants to be cuffed this winter. She’s probably not quite yet at bonafide status then. What happens when models audition to be bonafides and don’t make the cut? Does Alpha Leo pass them off to his Wolf Pack? Does the Wolf Pack get to vote on who gets made a bonafide? They’re douchey enough to have rules like this, non?

[Pedro Pascal & Robin Tunney?](
[Pedro Pascal and Robin Tunney have lunch at Kings Road Cafe with her son, August 14, 2017](
Are [Pedro Pascal]( and [Robin Tunney]( dating? Have I been sleeping on this? Here they are yesterday in LA having lunch with her son. When I saw these photos at the agency I thought, oh, well they worked together on The Mentalist, so maybe they’re just good friends? But then google showed me this, from 2015:
I mean friends can totally walk down the street with their arms around each other. He certainly did with Sarah Paulson. And Lena Heady. But also, I’m not sure anyone cares enough to clarify. More people need to care. Because I definitely care about Pedro Pascal. Don’t you care about Pedro Pascal? Do you care that Pedro may or may not be dating Robin Tunney?
Narcos season 3 will be available on Netflix on September 1. Then, a couple of weeks later, we’ll be able to see Pedro in Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Director Matthew Vaughn asked Pedro to audition after watching him in Narcos and thinking, “[Who is this Burt Reynolds guy?](” Pedro didn’t make it into the first movie but Matthew obviously made room for him in the sequel. His character is called Jack Daniels/Whiskey.
Bottoms up. [#Kingsman]( [pic.twitter.com/QkfkKj3P8a](

Seriously. We need to pay more attention to Pedro Pascal, right?
