[LaineyGossip.com - Calling all smuthounds!] Thursday, June 15, 2017 [Intro for June 15, 2017]( [Katy Perry in The New York Times]( Dear Gossips, It’s been a week now since Katy Perry released her new album, Witness. Witness will most likely get to #1 on the Billboard 200. But the reviews haven’t been great. Which might explain why it started at #1 on iTunes but then [fell to #5]( by Wednesday behind the Dear Evan Hansen cast album. And in the UK, Witness is also in 5th on the midweek chart. For an artist at Katy’s level, it’s not the kind of strong start that we have been expecting. But it’s not like Katy hasn’t been working. She’s been promoting the album for weeks. She was livestreaming herself all weekend. She’s been pushing it on as many platforms as possible. So why has the Witness debut been so soft, beyond the fact that the album and the tracks on it are kind of medium? Katy’s new interview with [The New York Times]( published yesterday, might give us some insight. Katy is forthcoming about the influences, interior and exterior, that have shaped who she is now, with Witness. As the headline says, “Katy Perry woke up. She wants to tell you all about it”. The election was a big “trigger” for her. She’s going through therapy with her family. She claims to “know nothing” which is her approach to wanting to learn. A few months ago, Duana and I led with Katy on [Show Your Work]( after she covered VOGUE. I was into Katy’s “know nothing” approach then. I was looking forward to watching the “know nothing” phase of her career. The “know nothing” was supposed to be a new beginning. What we’ve seen in the weeks since though has been that “know nothing” felt like …kind of the same? There’s a new set of “mantras”, as Caryn Ganz observes in the [NYT piece]( but there’s the sense that, at least during the promotion of the album, they work more like slogans than they do as guides. One of those mantras for Katy right now is that, “intention is everything”. That was Oprah’s mantra too when she was making her talk show. Oprah has spoken often about “intention” through the years, about the “power of intention”, calling it the “#1 principle that rules (her) life”. Every pitch that was presented to her ended up having to go through the “intention” interrogation – what is the “intention” behind this segment idea, what is the “intention” of this story, does is meet the overall “intention” of our show? I wasn’t the biggest fan of The Oprah Winfrey Show but I can’t deny that there was a consistency to it, and that the people who did watch it regularly, and were affected by it, embraced the work of Oprah’s “intention”. How then has Katy Perry applied her “intention”? Saying that “intention is everything” is one thing. But as a member of the audience she is trying to reach, have you observed her rigorously test her work through the “intention” that is supposed to govern it? Being obsessed with [Keegan-Michael Key](. Of course you love Key and Peele, and Jordan Peele is doing his own world-domination thing—but Key has this other thing. He’s trying to be liked, and not always good at it being liked. That in itself is very endearing. Plus I’m a big [Cobie Smulders]( fan because she never flinched during each and every “Robin is Canadian” joke on HIMYM. So I assumed I would love their new Netflix series Friends From College. I love the opening scene. I would watch a 90-minute feature of these two in New York traffic. And you guys – can we just admit that either Fred Savage is magnetic on television or we’ve been conditioned to think so because of Wonder Years nostalgia for a time none of us lived through? Because every time he came onscreen I wanted to cheer… But I didn’t LOVE this trailer as much as I wanted to. I wanted to be texting everyone I know, interrupting their workdays to tell them how it was ‘just like us!’ I wanted to feel like I was just as cool as these people who went to ‘college outside Boston’. (If you don’t know, this is code for Harvard. If you do know, because you went there—do people ever just go ahead and say, “Yep! The big H…”? Is it always cloaked in secrecy?) But I wound up feeling uncomfortably like they were kind of dorky. Like the lack of self-awareness about a 10-year affair—you can have it, but it seems like you’d have worked out some better trailer-worthy quips about it after that long—or the fact that friends you’re supposed to have become adults with make you feel like anything other than yourself … I don’t know. I think I felt less than I wanted to. Still, I had a strange ‘college’ experience and didn’t realize until years later. I was talking with a friend who was finding it hard to make friends in her new city after grad school… and I realized some of us didn’t do that. That is, I went to school in the biggest city in Canada, and then you stay to work because… you do. Or if you go to New York or L.A., there’s enough of ‘us’ diaspora’ed there that it feels like, if not ‘home’, at least somewhere you’re kiiiind of known. If I had moved to Kansas or Winnipeg after graduation, maybe I would look back at my college friends as the weird and unfinished part of what made me who I am… But I can’t shake the feeling that KMK and Cobie and [Kate McKinnon]( (!!!) are so impossibly cool that I can’t imagine them having real problems, or it feels like they’re going back to their 22-year-old selves to manufacture some? Am I off-base? Is this going to pick up where St. Elmo’s Fire left off, theme song and billowing curtains and all? I’m prepared to love it – I just don’t know yet whether I do. Here’s Orly, with Alpha Wolf [Leonardo DiCaprio]( and Beta-Plus Wolf [Tobey Maguire](, and some other career wolves, hanging out in New York yesterday. Leo was also seen the other day, [with the pack]( and Jennifer Meyer, spending time with the Meyer-Maguire kids too. On those days, Alpha Wolf becomes Uncle Leo and hunting season is temporarily put on pause. Without the kids though, well, the Wolf Pack is back on search? For what? Please. There is work to be done. Earlier this week, one of Leo’s own was only awarded a [silver medal in f-cking]( Katy Perry. This is unacceptable. All member wolves of The Revenant Wolf Pack must be gold medal quality f-ckers. If one wolf’s f-cking comes up short, it reflects poorly on the overall f-cking of all the other f-cker wolves. Redemption, then, must be swift (no pun intended, but if it happens that way, that works really great too). It’s summertime in the city. It’s model time all the time everywhere. [Click here for the rest of the photos.]( Posted at 7:27 PM [Will the Real Rebel Wilson please stand up]( [Rebel Wilson leaves the Victorian Supreme Court on June 15, 2017 in Melbourne, Australia]( Have you been following the [Rebel Wilson]( defamation case in Australia? I have because I find it super interesting that she is asserting damages to her reputation over a series of stories in a tabloid. It’s not about a drug problem or health scare or love triangle, but rather rumours about her age, background and name. Sarah wrote about it [a couple of years ago]( and it’s certainly worth going back to read about the original issue at the time (it centered around her age, upbringing and real name). As Sarah wrote then, the allegations were extremely off-brand for Rebel, who presented as this kooky, vivacious, and most important, candid comedic force. She was supposed to be unpolished and raw, and the allegations (that she grew up posh and was manipulating her background to appear more relatable) bumped up against that. And of course, the age issue is always a pressing one for women, no matter their genre or medium, they are generally working against the “too old” clock. So Rebel sued in Australia and the stories originated from Bauer Media (specifically Woman's Day, Australian Women's Weekly, NW and OK! magazine, per the Daily Mail) but were picked up everywhere. There are a few reasons I think Rebel decided to pursue this (and take time out of her career, attending trial and spending a fortune on lawyers). First off, she said she is fighting back against “tall poppy syndrome.” This is very common outside of the US – Canadians, Australians, and Brits often refer to this phenomenon when one of their own becomes famous in the US and then everyone at home talks about what a sell-out/fraud they are. Rebel also said that the tabloid tracked down a “jealous” ex-friend from high school who fed them stories and, in that way, I can understand her motivation. She doesn’t want her story written by someone who doesn’t know her anymore (this is similar to the [rogue relative]( many celebs content with) and, on a petty level, who wouldn’t want to prove a sh-t talking old friend wrong? The other, likely more pressing issue, is that Rebel’s team asserts she was fired from two animation jobs when the stories hit. First, Kung Fu Panda 3 and second, Trolls. This also piqued my curiosity. Are DreamWorks execs reading Australian tabloids? Probably not, but in the digital age, stories that are distributed worldwide through syndication, content sharing, links etc, there are SEO experts who work for online publications whose job it is to find these stories. It’s not unfathomable that people who were looking to work with her could have found these stories. But doesn’t suing give the story more life? Yes, for sure. Pursuing it was quite a risk for Rebel because not only would she have to answer to all the rumours but if she lost, it would have gotten 10X the press. Suing and losing could legitimately ruin someone’s reputation. This is why many of them (Ashton Kutcher, Chris Maritn, Justin Bieber, Calvin Harris) threaten to sue but don’t follow through; they are hoping the threat is enough to make it go away, or at least delegitimize the story. The gamble paid off though [as she won]( – unanimously on 40 questions. She says she is set to return to the US to work on a movie with Liam Hemsworth and try to book more roles. (Out of curiosity, I checked some of the same tabloids for stories on Liam. They mostly center around Miley.) Her team is probably securing her as many auditions as possible right now. My advice would be get her back on TV! Super Fun Night didn’t get the shot it deserved. But there’s another aspect to this: reporting isn’t just generated from traditional media. Fans are constantly working to unearth the most random sh-t (see Lainey’s post on [Lorde and onion rings]( today – I f-cking love onion rings). That is a completely unplanned narrative, but it won’t hurt Lorde. It’s fun and endearing. Stamping out rumours is a game of whack-a-mole and, as any good PR person knows, you never want to be in a position where you have to answer to stories that are already out there. You need to see what is coming, even in the blind spots. The easy answer is the truth can’t be twisted, but actors are creative people who are paid to be someone else. There’s a fantastical element to their job – how boring would it be if everyone had to recite their resume in every interview? You can see how some would feel the pressure to tweak their life story. We all create narratives for ourselves, we just don’t have reporters who care. In the short term, this is a victory for Rebel as she was able to prove the tabloids were motivated by maliciousness. But in the long term, this is a case study about transparency in branding for celebrities. If the reporter hadn’t written about the age discrepancy, someone else would have found her old high school annual, or a driver’s license picture --something. Found her childhood home or dug up her birth certificate. And posted it to social media. Then what? We won!!! Magazine reported yesterday ([via the Daily Mail]() that [Charlize Theron]( and [Gabriel Aubry]( are dating. OK! Magazine is not exactly a leader in reliable gossip. So here’s how this story happened: On May 27, Charlize and Gabriel were photographed in Santa Monica with their children. There’s one shot of them that everyone’s focusing on that shows Gabriel standing in front of Charlize and it looks like she migggght, maybe, have her arms behind him. Maybe. Maybe if you haven’t seen the whole set of photos or weren’t able to zoom out. When you zoom out, you can see that Charlize is actually holding her daughter August and that there are other people around. And there’s really nothing here to suggest that it’s anything more than two attractive people hanging out with a group of parents on an outing with their kids. In fact there are only a few photos in the set that show Charlize and Gabriel in the same frame. All the other pictures are of Gabriel with his daughter, Nahla. And there’s even one of him talking to another blonde woman in a yellow baseball cap. But, still, it was enough of a starting point for OK! to have made a story out of the photo. Because of course it would totally be a good gossip story. I’d be into if it were true – Charlize and Gabriel Aubry, I mean the red carpet photos would be f-cking spectacular. But, right now, there’s really not that much to go on. OK!’s report from sources about how “they are really into each other” and that “it’s still the early days so they want to keep things discreet, but they have a genuine connection and obviously a huge attraction” isn’t worth much gossip weight because it’s clear, from the timeline of how this story evolved, that they happened to see a photo of the two of them together and generated the narrative from there. So, as exciting as it would be, and as much as I don’t want to be a bummer, let’s not call it until there’s actually something to call. Tom Hiddleston has been quiet for a couple of months, perhaps advised, after his [GQ interview]( to take it easy on the bolognese and the dancing and the exclamation points. Taylor, as you know, has been even quieter, though she let us know recently that she has a new boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, that she may or may not have started dating him [quite soon]( after she decided that Tom was too much, even for her, and that her old music is still more popular than [Katy Perry](’s [new music]( confirming perhaps once and for all that she and Katy are on different levels. It was a power move, for sure, re-releasing her music back on streaming services last week. And she’s made her point. Katy has conceded. So, now, what’s next, Taylor Swift? Well, we are two weeks away from [#Taymerica](. Will there be a #Taymerica 2017? In August Taylor will be in court for that lawsuit against the DJ who allegedly groped her. Two months later, in October, is when people are expecting her to release a new album. Unlike Katy Perry, who has been established as a challenger, as opposed to the incumbent, Taylor won’t need to use their feud to promote whatever it is that she’ll be promoting right? Did you hear about [Lorde]( and the fact that she might be an onion ring expert? If it’s true, it’s my favourite detail about Lorde. Earlier this week, Lorde’s fans became convinced that she ran a secret Instagram account, “onionringsworldwide”, cataloguing the best and the worst onion rings on the planet. If you’re interested in the evidence, [click here](. I’m not interested in the evidence. I’m interested in the fact that this is what she might be doing when she’s not writing songs and performing and promoting her album – that is, being a human being with real human being food fetishes. We all have them. For some people, it’s burgers. Burgers is actually a really common one. We all have a friend, or several friends, who can’t f-cking shut up about which burger place is best and why. Duana, for example, for a while, when it first opened, was all about a certain burger place in Toronto with a sort of religious name. They serve the kind of burgers that are homemadey styles, you know? Not like pre-cut patties? I prefer the pre-cut patty. She thinks I’m unevolved. Other common food fetishes that people talk incessantly about include pizza, BBQ, tacos, you get the point. It’s never onion rings though! But that’s how much Lorde cares about onion rings! You know what I care about? Chinese food. I consider myself pretty experienced in Chinese food. Right now I’m in Houston and there’s a Sichuan restaurant here called Chengdu Taste. The Chengdu Taste in LA has been declared by some the “best Sichuan restaurant in the country”. I’ve not been to the one in LA. But, given that big statement, I obviously want to go to the one here. We don’t have a lot of time though so I called them yesterday to find out about their hours and, if we decide to stop in for lunch, whether or not they might have dimsum on the menu. When I asked the person who picked up the phone about dimsum, he told me he’d never heard of dimsum before. This is the kind of small thing that I fixate on and have an irrationally hard time getting over because I am a grudgy, judgy asshole. I know it’s only one person and one phone call but… is that like calling an Italian restaurant and asking them if they have burrata? Even if they don’t serve burrata, they should know what it is! [Click here for the rest of the photos.]( Posted at 3:57 PM [The Public Face Of Hidden Trauma]( [Corinne Olympios/DeMario Jackson]( Earlier this week, I wrote about the Bachelor in Paradise [sexual misconduct allegations](. Over the last few days, more sources have come out -- many former contestants and Bachelor rejects are just dying to get a headline – but there is not a flood of new information. Chris Harrison released a statement telling people not to jump to conclusions and that they will get back to work as soon as possible. (We can all agree Chris Harrison is an assface, right?) Someone may have been raped while filming, so um, who is still complaining about losing a season of Bachelor in Paradise?! (Also he looks like Sean Spicer.) Despite all the “sources” that are running to every tabloid from PEOPLE to Radar Online, the story has largely stayed the same: the entire incident hinges on whether or not Corinne Olympios was able to consent to sexual activity with DeMario Jackson. The Cut has the most graphic, detailed description of the alleged assault to date – an account that is in dispute. Please take heed that there are disturbing details -- you can read about it [here](. Corinne has decided to come forward, and released a statement to Variety. I’ve included it in full because I think it’s important to have the context. “I am a victim and have spent the last week trying to make sense of what happened the night of June 4. Although I have little memory of that night, something bad obviously took place, which I understand is why production on the show has now been suspended and a producer on the show has filed a complaint against the production. As a woman, this is my worst nightmare and it has now become my reality. As I pursue the details and facts surrounding that night and the immediate days after, I have retained a group of professionals to ensure that what happened on June 4 comes to light and I can continue my life, including hiring an attorney to obtain justice and seeking therapy to begin dealing with the physical and emotional trauma stemming from that evening.” She is now repped by Marty Singer (yes you recognize his name, and everything you need to know you can read about [here](). She has also hired Stan Rosenfield, a very powerful publicist who has worked with George Clooney, Will Smith, Robert De Niro, to name a few. Look who this team chose for the statement – Variety. A trade paper, not a tabloid. This isn’t entertainment anymore, it’s news. DeMario, who has been “spotted” several times by TMZ and is chatting up photographers, has also [released a statement to E!](. I’ve also included it in full: "It's unfortunate that my character and family name has been assassinated this past week with false claims and malicious allegations. I will be taking swift and appropriate legal action until my name is cleared and, per the advice of legal counsel, will be seeking all available remedies entitled to me under the laws." His statement (wisely) avoids mention of Corinne but does maintain he is being buried by “false claims and malicious allegations.” To be clear, he is not being investigated by the police at this time. He has not been accused of anything by Corinne. He is also in a vortex of leakers and attention whores who will do anything to latch onto a headline, no matter how disturbing the details. DeMario is entitled to defend himself but whoever is advising him needs to keep him away from texts, social media and paps (his “friend” already sold texts to [Page Six](). He should also be wary of his “friends” on the inside of The Bachelor universe too, because when push comes to shove, who do you think they would choose to save – DeMario or their own asses and livelihood? As Corinne’s statement clarifies, she has very little memory of the incident and the complaint was made by a producer. One thing she is absolutely certain about: “I am a victim.” There is nothing vague about that, even if the details are still murky. She specifies that she has hired a team to seek the truth and, judging by her choices, to protect herself. Marty Singer is ferocious for his clients, everyone knows that. Corinne needs not just that protective buffer between herself and all the people who are trying to get at her right now, but she also needs someone who is not afraid of Warner Brothers. Everyone associated with the show, and even many entertainment lawyers with clients who do business with the studio, would be afraid. Marty Singer got Charlie Sheen PAID after the Two and a Half Men debacle – Warner Brothers is probably scared of him. The production company, through their handling of the incident and the abundance of leaks, have proven that they are either not willing or not able to protect her and she is very smart to create her own allies. Beyond the legal aspect, her statement has tones of vulnerability, confusion and an emerging picture of someone who is in the early days of confronting a trauma in her life. If the details in The Cut are correct, not only was she assaulted, but she was also carried around and left to sleep it off when she should have been seeing a doctor. She was surrounded by sober adults who were at work. The entire show is centered around drinking and possible couplings – the initial incident happened on camera. There is no sneaking away. Closely monitoring the cast behavior is, one can assume, a major part of a reality TV producer’s job. Allow me to play Marty Singer for a moment: How many drinks did she have before she got into the pool? Did anyone suggest to call a medic? Was there one on site? How far away? She had no cellphone, she couldn’t call one for herself, correct? Who carried her? How far? What attempts were made to wake her up? Was she coherent? Did anyone check on her in the night? How was she put to bed that night? These are also questions Corinne will have to find out about herself, in the third person, while a tape of her possibly being assaulted is in the hand of TV execs who have the power to decide if any behavior crossed a line… on their show. Would you trust that decision making process? I also read a report in US Weekly (which is under new ownership, but probably still has reality TV contacts from Radar Online) that the next day, before production was shut down, she was told she was [not allowed to drink](.
