Dear Gossips, The American Film Institute honoured Diane Keaton last night with the Lifetime Achieve

[LaineyGossip.com - Calling all smuthounds!] Friday, June 09, 2017 [Intro for June 9, 2017]( [Diane Keaton arrives at the AFI Life Achievement Award Gala Tribute To Diane Keaton on June 8, 2017 in Hollywood, California]( Dear Gossips, The American Film Institute honoured Diane Keaton last night with the Lifetime Achievement Award. She is the ninth woman to receive the honour, joining a list that includes Bette Davis, Jane Fonda, Lillian Gish, Shirley MacLaine, Meryl Streep, Barbra Streisand, Barbara Stanwyck, and Elizabeth Taylor. Needless to say, Diane belongs in the group. And it’s a wonderful, legendary group of women, women who have shown their work, women whose work we all know. In Hollywood though, as we’ve seen, it’s not just about the work, but about the opportunities to work. Some have more opportunities to work than others. The hope is that that is changing. And if those opportunities open up, this list will open up too – and perhaps, not too long from now, it might include someone like Viola Davis, or Oprah Winfrey. Or Angela Bassett. An Asian actress who’s just now seeing more scripts, asked to read for roles she may not have been considered for just a few years ago. An indigenous artist who’s been accepted into a mentorship program to write, produce, and star in a new film about an old story. I want to believe that this will happen sooner rather than later. Last night, many of the event attendees spoke about Diane Keaton, her body of work, and her talent, and they dressed for her too. Jane Fonda wore a gorgeous all-white pantsuit and explained why: “[Diane} absolutely owns the color white. So tonight, in her honor, I'm wearing white. It's not just the color of Donald Trump's cabinet. It's a special white, suffragette white. Women wear white as a symbol of strength." Meryl Streep turned up her collar and put a tie around it, an obvious homage: "Diane Keaton, arguably one of the most covered-up persons in the history of clothes, is also a transparent woman, even though she is famously the only member of the original cast of Hair on Broadway who would not take off her clothes at the end of the show." Can we talk about Diane’s outfit last night though? It’s a classic Diane Keaton Outfit. And I’m f-cking obsessed with it. Also, those Louis Vuitton boots from last season. They’ve been worn by teenagers. They’ve been worn by twenty-something Instagram models. They’ve been worn by 30-something acclaimed actresses. They’ve been worn by 40-something bloggers (me!). And now 71 year old Diane Keaton. They’re probably the best boots to have come out in the last decade. The AFI tribute to Diane Keaton will air on TNT next week. I can’t wait to watch all the speeches from all these performers who are often better at speeching when they’re speeching for someone else and not for themselves. Meryl, no doubt, will be the highlight of highlights. Meryl, of course, would never just read the words off a prompter. It’s the delivery that makes what’s funny on the page even funnier in person. Which, of course, reminds me of the night Meryl herself was honoured with the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award – and Nora Ephron was there to celebrate her. It’s been a few years since I posted this video. So it’s time to enjoy it again. And again. Every time I watch it I see a new bonus, like the cutaway to Carrie Fisher giggling in appreciation of Nora’s excellent comedic timing that now has new meaning. Have a great weekend! Yours in gossip, Lainey [Click here for the rest of the photos.]( Posted at 1:11 PM [What Else?]( My friend Melissa often says that “there’s a lid for every pot”. If you’re a fourth tier Aussie playboy looking to climb to the third tier, the lid to your pot is most definitely a [fourth tier former It Girl](. They’re perfect for each other. I see a future. (Dlisted) Look. I get it. Typos happen. But should there be equality in typos? Should EVERYONE be allowed to commit one? I feel like… almost everyone. But not everyone. From certain people, [certain offices](, they’re inexcusable. And if anyone had any money, every country would have an Anti-Typo Administration. (Pajiba) Many of you have written today [about this](. I read about Tom Hardy yesterday. That is, actually, I skimmed about it yesterday. No. That’s not entirely true either. I picked out a few words, and then I closed the page altogether. Having been through it myself, it’s just too hard. (Just Jared) I don’t hate [this outfit on Selena Gomez](. The top is great. The pants are good, and they’d be even better if they were actually gym pants, like for running. But I can’t get behind the belt. The belt is what’s making this look like a valet at Versailles, from the time before the revolution. (Go Fug Yourself) Jon Hamm gets into his feelings [about being single](. I’m actually surprised he’s still single – although he and Kate Beckinsale might be a possibility, maybe? For the record, since I didn’t get to comment on this last week, I think they’re an excellent idea and I fully support it. But if it’s true, and they do get together, will he be as candid about being with her as he is about being with nobody? (Cele|bitchy) I need to think more this weekend about whether or not [manspreading should be declared illegal](. Like, it is indeed annoying and intrusive, but should it be legislated? Again, I’m not sure. And I need to sit (ha!) with it a while longer. But also… when someone is manspreading into your space, is it OK to start shaming him in front of all the other passengers? I fantasise about that. Seriously, I daydream about being on the subway and there’s a manspreader all up in my seat and I’ve actually scripted what I would say, and how loudly I would say it. And I feel like I need that to happen before it’s outlawed, just so that I can have that moment of satisfaction.(Jezebel) [Click here for the rest of the photos.]( Posted at 7:22 PM [Tilda’s hearts]( [Tilda Swinton heads to the New York premiere of Okja, June 8, 2017]( Straight fashion post here. Because I can’t stop staring at everything that’s happening in this outfit on [Tilda Swinton](. First of all, it’s my kind of dress – blousy, long, high neck, full sleeves…and a sparkly perfectly sized heart. Not too small to be inconsequential. Not too big to take over the entire look. And then! The shoes! Shoes that make their own hearts! And I don’t find this twee, not even a little. Maybe because Tilda’s style is never twee. Her hair alone sets the tone for that. And also her lips. It’s a hot pink that I feel like non-Tilda’s would never have chosen, because of the worry that the hot pink clashes with the red heart. Yes. There is clash. And it’s great. It’s so much clash that it becomes complementary. Matching the red on red would be unimaginative. Going with a nude lip would have been too safe. The hot pink is EXACTLY the right choice. And… all of this, the red, the pink, together, it actually GOES with the colour theme for the movie. RIGHT??!!?? [Click here for the rest of the photos.]( Posted at 6:34 PM [Emma Stone, Diane Keaton, and Patty Jenkins]( [Emma Stone arrives at the AFI Life Achievement Award Gala Tribute To Diane Keaton on June 8, 2017 in Hollywood, California]( I’m not imagining it when I say that [Emma Stone]( has been compared to [Diane Keaton](, right? I know that she herself has talked openly many times about her admiration for Diane. But, like, people have called Emma an actress in the mold of Diane Keaton, right? Yes, yes, let her be the first Emma Stone and not the next Diane Keaton. Of course. But what I’m asking is that they’ve been connected, that they remind people of each other? No? Maybe I was just influenced a few years ago after reading Diane interviewing Emma in [Interview](. Have you read it before? If not it’s worth a revisit, right from the beginning. Diane opens with a question about ambition, revealing that she used to hide it, hide her desire for things. Out of fear that they wouldn’t happen, that she had not right to want. And Emma, she doesn’t challenge her, but here she is, talking to her “hero”, and she’s like…really? Because I only feel “safe” when I know what I want. It’s a fascinating contrast. Is it generational? Or is it simply their personalities? Then there’s the part when Diane just blurts out, with no warning, “So, Emma, look. The way I see it is, you're unconventionally beautiful”. And even on paper, if you’re familiar with Diane’s communication style, is just so Diane Keaton, non? And I feel like I know where that question comes from – which is that this is how Diane herself has been described. It’s a compliment to her, and she means it as a compliment. If you’ve read any of her books though, you might know that it took her a while to get there. Emma was at the AFI event honouring Diane Keaton last night. And she was also photographed with Patty Jenkins. Patty’s wearing Wonder Woman inspiration on her arm. And both she and Emma are giving us the Wonder Woman arms. I love this lip colour on [Gwen Stefani](. But it’s the kind of lip colour that I think washes me out because of my skin tone. That said, I still keep trying. [@jamienelson6 u 4 so fly gx]( A post shared by Gwen Stefani (@gwenstefani) on Jun 9, 2017 at 7:40am PDT Have you seen [Sarah Silverman](’s new Netflix special, A Speck Of Dust yet? I love her. I love it. And she’s on the rundown right now for the next episode of Show Your Work. Because Sarah has talked about how, as a comic, she’s evolved her work, updated her jokes, understood that certain jokes don’t work in certain times. Also, the video at the end of the special, wait for it. It’s worth it for that part alone. Last night, Brad walked the red carpet in support of Bong Joon-ho’s Okja and the pants were not baggy. The suit was well-tailored. He looks really good. He looks relaxed and comfortable. There were, by the way, no interviews. Photos only. Brad and Dede Gardner produced Okja through Plan B. So I guess that’s why he was doing the weather bit on The Jim Jefferies Show [the other day](? Be visible for your projects, of course. But… um…. if you don’t tell me what the project is, save for some pictures at the premiere, and I don’t run a Tumblr account for your fans, how would I know that’s the one I should be supporting? As I was writing this post, an email came in from a reader called A. A’s message: (Click to see full image) Agree or disagree? I think I might agree. But I also wonder whether or not A, and people who agree with A, might find Brad interesting again when there’s another woman in his life. And that, to me, is an interesting conversation. It used to be that it was Brad Pitt who fame-elevated the women he was with: Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston. He and Angelina Jolie elevated each other. The ultimate blockbuster celebrity couple, no longer together. Do you find it ironic then that he might need a new romance to make him interesting considering that that used to be his superpower? [Click here for the rest of the photos.]( Posted at 4:36 PM [Kate Mara beyond Zoe Barnes]( [Kate Mara joins The Humane Society of the United States' rally at USDA on June 7, 2017 in Washington, DC]( [Kate Mara](’s made some really interesting choices since leaving House of Cards. And her latest project, Megan Leavey, about the real-life U.S. Marine corporate veteran and K-9 handler, gives her an opportunity to show off her teeth-clenching tenacity and sly smugness in a way that would make Zoe Barnes proud. I miss Zoe Barnes. But before Megan Leavey, with the exception of The Martian, Kate’s hardly made a splash at the box office or with critics. [Fantastic Four]( was a major flop – she and Jamie Bell fell in love but professionally it did nothing for her. Her film [Captive with David Oyelowo]( barely made a splash, and her film about post-war PTSD with Shia LaBeouf, Man Down, made more headlines for selling only three tickets at the U.K. box office than it did [for her performance](. Oh, and Sarah called her recent effort Morgan a “[derivate, clunky, dead boring exercise in science fiction.]( Even in The Martian, which went on to Oscar nominations, her part was small, but it was not super memorable. Where Megan Leavey is different though, is that it’s actually quite compelling, and gives Kate a chance to show what she can do. When we meet Megan, she’s a bit of a misunderstood loner who’s struggling to find her identity after the death of her childhood best friend. She’s not over her parents’ divorce either and decides to join the Marines, which her mother (Edie Falco, who has very little to do) dubs as her latest attempt at running away from her problems. As you can expect, her pouty disposition does not make her an instant hit with her Marine superiors. Again, she struggles to fit in and takes an interest in the K-9 unit. When she finally does get a bomb-sniffing dog of her own (after passing a series of tests and training, without the satisfying-albeit-unnecessary-for-this-movie GI Jane-style montage), she gets paired up with “the most aggressive dog” available, Rex. They bond very slowly, because as Megan learns, “everything [she] feels goes down leash,” and she cannot be taught how to connect with anybody, let alone a dog. If you’ve seen the trailer (spoilers), you know the two survive a near-death experience together, and battle PTSD together too. She spends the rest of the movie fighting to adopt him, and struggling to return to civilian life. According to Kate, she’s the one [who reached out]( to Gabriela Cowperthwaite to direct the project. It’s a good one to cut her narrative teeth on, since she previously directed the SeaWorld documentary Blackfish. Some pacing issues and a very cartoony Common-as-her-superior aside, Kate carries Megan Leavey to being a watchable, three-star movie. And you’ll love it even more if you’ve ever had a dog in your life. In all of her interviews, Kate has said that since Man Down, Kate had been hungry to tell a story from a female Marine’s point of view. You can tell that she wants this movie to work, in spite of its meager box office predictions. But, on a weekend where the film will likely fall to another female-directed film in Wonder Woman, there’s still something to celebrate here. And soon, there will be three female-helmed movies at the box office, with Sofia Coppola’s [The Beguiled](. If anything else, this will surely sell more tickets than Man Down. And it marks a turn in Kate’s career. She’s working with a female director she handpicked, in a story she’s passionate about, written by two women including Annie Mumolo of Bridesmaids fame, and her husband. Next up, she’ll reteam with her [Tiny Detectives co-star Ellen Page]( in Mercy, another indie, but it’s her first-ever producing credit, and will also be lensed by a woman. Kate’s making a name for herself in an interesting lane -- and bowing out of a lot of studio fare. I can't decide if she only wants this level of fame (a la Sarah Gadon), or if she's hungry for more prestige or marquee work. It's also crazy to me that Rooney is the younger sister, because Kate carries herself with such a youthful vibe. Beyond my Zoe Barnes obsession, I’m rooting for Kate to carve her own path in whatever way she wants. Also, I really, really, really like her on Twitter. She’s called out People's reporting [on her engagement]( and is living her best life, through a love of [One Direction](. Drinking champagne. If you’ve seen Obvious Child, you know she can carry a movie. That she is a talented actor and comedian is not a secret. But watching the Landline trailer is the first time I’ve seen Jenny Slate and thought, “There, that is a movie star.” There’s a confidence, an ease of command, to how she appears in this trailer, and presumably, the movie it’s selling, that isn’t new, necessarily—[Mona Lisa Saperstein]( demands a confident performer—but is amplified. Slate has carried a movie and she’s proved her ability in more [serious fare](, and now there is a sense that this is her time, and she knows it. Landline was a hit at Sundance earlier this year, and is set for a July release, making it summer counter-programming right as franchise fatigue starts to set in. The first trailer has two big laughs (“Frisbee” and “sports drink”), and a lot of stuff in between that will make you smile. It’s not that I expect this kind of movie to be a runaway hit—although it would be fun to live in a world where it was—but Landline has “devoted cult following” stamped all over it. I’m just not sure who the cult will be: People actually nostalgic for the 1990s, or people who are post-ironically into 1990s nostalgia. Or maybe it will be Jenny Slate’s devoted following, as more people discover her. Chris Pine is having a moment right now after years of slowly building momentum. In a couple months, let’s see if Jenny Slate can do the same. [Click here for the rest of the photos.]( Posted at 3:34 PM [Girl Sh-t: never a coincidence, always a conspiracy]( [Katy Perry/Taylor Swift]( There are certain phrases and expressions that I’ve been using on my site for years and that, if I may be self-indulgent for a minute, I’m very proud to have branded. Some examples: MiniVan Majority, Girl Sh-t Is The Best Sh-t (stolen from my friend Lara), and Coincidence or Conspiracy? I love it when two or more of them come together. Today is one of those days. Taylor Swift and Katy Perry are giving us Girl Sh-t and Coincidence or Conspiracy at the same time. [Katy Perry](’s new album, Witness, was released last night. Yesterday her interview [with NME]( was being widely circulated because she once again had sh-t to say about [Taylor Swift](. Previously Katy talked about Taylor [with James Corden](. And when asked about why she decided to open up about their beef, this was how she explained it: “Well, James Corden makes me and the whole world feel very safe,” she says. “No one has asked me about my side of the story, and there are three sides of every story: one, two and the truth.” It means it’s difficult to be a Katycat and a Swiftie. Isn’t that against the message of fan-group unity she recently posted? “I said that but, I mean, I’m not Buddha – things irritate me,” she says. “I wish that I could turn the other cheek every single time, but I’m also not a pushover, you know? Especially when someone tries to assassinate my character with little girls. That’s so messed up!” Before we continue, can we just agree that there are no sides here? That the only side to take in all of this is the side of Good Gossip? I’m not interested in the conversation about whose team to be on. I’m interested in how these two are trying to game each other – and who’s doing it better from round to round. Because this is the celebrity cage match of our time. For weeks, maybe even months now, Katy Perry’s been hustling her new music, this new album. Katy Perry has put out some great songs in the past, irresistible bangers that you can’t get away from on the radio. Just as an example, when I first heard Dark Horse? I remembered it right away. I will never forget my favourite line from that song, “so you want to play with magic”. But if you asked me to hum the chorus of Bon Appetit, I’d just hand over the money because there’s no point in trying, I’ve lost the bet. The first reviews of Witness are pretty medium. No one is saying it sucks but it’s not lighting anyone on fire either. As [Variety notes](: What we don’t have here is the kind of obvious smash to which all of America would plainly say: Baby, you’re a firework. But the album counts at least as a sparkler — the kind you hold in your hand for 45 seconds in the summer, if not the enduring, inset kind Marilyn extolled. Still, for an artist like Katy Perry, with such an established fanbase, reviews might not matter. An album can sell even if the critics don’t love it. And Katy Perry has been trying to sell it hard. This is where Taylor Swift comes in though. The loudest blasts of publicity, the most notable headlines about Katy Perry’s Witness, involve Taylor Swift. You might say, then, that she’s made her feud with Taylor Swift part of her sales strategy. Which is why, again, it’s pointless, to me, to be like “I’m with Katy on this one! I hate Taylor!” Because they’re BOTH petty and manipulative as f-ck. So. Now that we’ve established that Katy has used Taylor on her Witness press tour, it was only a matter of time before Taylor answered back. Taylor’s new album, however, isn’t ready. Instead, she’s using old work to clap back. Katy dropped Witness last night. And last night, this happened: ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ [pic.twitter.com/kcpY03qHLp]( — Taylor Nation (@taylornation13) [June 8, 2017]( Coincidence or Conspiracy? PLEASE. The most abject Taylor Swift fans might try to convince themselves that Taylor wouldn’t have known about Katy’s album release or they might claim that it was Taylor’s team that made the decision but both of those rationalisations don’t hold up because Taylor Swift OF COURSE WOULD KNOW that Katy Perry’s Witness was coming and, also, Taylor Swift has told us how many f-cking times that she’s the boss of Taylor Swift so no one’s managing her return to streaming and the timing of Taylor’s return to streaming but Taylor Swift her-goddamn-self. Pretending ignorance helps no one. The only way to read this is that it was intentional. With an intentional message: Your NEW work vs my OLD work, let’s rumble. Which is why I’m living for this. This is Taylor being like, oh, you brought your brand new car with the Stark Industries engine to the race? Yeah, ok, let me just dust off this old classic from a few years ago in my garage and we’ll see if you can blow past me on the first turn. Sorry, but it’s kind of great. Great as in great for gossip. Great as in this is what you want if you love a good old-fashioned celebrity throw-down. I mean, why are you even at this party if what you need is all class all the time? The other reason this is great is because it’s great for Taylor Swift, the business. If she is readying a new album in the fall, which is what everyone is expecting, there’s no way she can afford to continue to not allow her work to be streamed. It’s impossible now. She resisted it to her advantage before and it’s to her advantage presently to re-engage with streaming platforms after making her point. Doing so at this moment allows her catalogue to act as a pre-publicity momentum build before she comes in with an updated product, presumably in a couple of months while, at the same time, stabbing her nemesis in the back. So, basically, this is a multipurpose move – there’s a professional benefit and a personal bonus. Taylor Swift has issued a challenge. Katy Perry has to answer that challenge. Witness has to answer that challenge. Witness will likely debut at #1. But will it be a big enough #1? A big enough #1 that’ll be a counterpunch to Taylor’s low blow? This reminds me of Wonder Woman, of course. Because Wonder Woman is the template for life right now. Antiope to Diana during training: “You expect a battle to be fair. A battle will never be fair.” [Click here for the rest of the photos.]( Posted at 3:02 PM [Privacy Policy]( - [Unsubscribe](
