[Intro for June 2, 2017](
[12 year old Ananya Vinay of Fresno, CA. won the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee ](
Dear Gossips,
The NBA Finals started last night. Also the best reality TV show of the season was on. So… you watched the reality TV show, right? I did. I do [every year](. The Spelling Bee! Hilariously some of the people who started the night with basketball ended up switching over to the Spelling Bee. Because the Spelling Bee is all the drama.
In an odd twist, there are people at the NBA Finals who are now watching the Spelling Bee on their phones.
— Matt Schick (@ESPN_Schick) [June 2, 2017](
In fact, there may have been more swagger at the Spelling Bee than there was on the court. What’s harder? Dunking over someone taller than you or spelling “mogollon”? Doesn’t matter. The point is, when you do can do either in front of a live audience you can have all the attitude you want.
Everybody's focused on the NBA finals, but [#mogollon]( was the mic drop GOAT moment of the night. [#spellingbee]( [pic.twitter.com/VlmP1vqpC3](
— Annie Jung (@WalkerPinkLabel) [June 2, 2017](
Until your ma gives you the gears when you get home. Check out ma’s reaction to that moment of youthful insolence. She is not here for Spelling Bieber:

— TotalProSports (@TotalProSports) [June 2, 2017](
But, come on, ma, if you can’t strut off stage when you’ve killed a word nobody has ever heard of and nobody will ever use in their life, when can you? When you actually Know It All, can’t you, like, be a know-it-all? I f-cking love the know-it-all moments at the Spelling Bee. Last year it was eventual co-winner Nihar Janga giving us all the know – and the trash-clapping! Remember the trash-clapping?
This kid is SAVAGE AF! ð [#spellingbee](
— Fake SportsCenter (@FakeSportsCentr) [May 27, 2016](
This year, we got more head-shaking:
We have head-shaking in the background for the second straight year!!! [#spellingbee]( [pic.twitter.com/SjTVo7y2Z2](
— Zesty CLee News (@BallFromGrace) [June 2, 2017](
Girl Sh-t, Boy Sh-t, Speller Sh-t!
Seriously, the Spelling Bee is the most complete television event of the year. The people who tried to remake Dirty Dancing could have learned from it. Also award shows. And we haven’t even shouted out the Spelling Bee’s recurring character – the spellers may change, but Dr Jacques Bailly never does:
Can we please bottle up the obvious kindness and gentle spirit of Dr. Bailly and pass it around? [@ScrippsBee]( [#spellingbee](
— Jenny Price Smith (@madisonjps) [June 2, 2017](
Finally, the tie streak was broken this year. By 12 year old Ananya Vinay who did a better Taylor Swift – OMG, me??? – than Taylor Swift has ever done:

Have a great weekend!
Yours in gossip,

[Smutty Social Media, June 2, 2017](
[Amber Heard and Elon Musk arrive on the Gold Coast with his kids, May 28, 2017](
[Chrissy Teigen]( is in Vancouver, which isn’t necessarily news because a lot of celebs come and go, but she is someone I’d like to spy on from afar (not in a creepy way). More like at a restaurant, I’d be curious to see what she orders. Seth Rogen sent her a bunch of food recommendations and I’d add Bao Bei to this list, as well as Savio Volpe. Vij’s is also an obvious option but it doesn’t take resos for anyone. The owner, Vij was once on The Social and he told a story about a celebrity who declined to wait for a table: John Legend. Maybe he was short on time? I hope that’s what it was because I’d hate to think John Legend is that type.
In Vancouver! Hi Vancouver!

Will.i.am says [Fergie]( has not officially left the Black Eyed Peas so the recent rumours are false. The UK tabloids have been speculating for awhile about Nicole Scherzinger joining the group but this pretty much shuts that down.
Lies...[@Fergie]( is focusing on [#DoubleDutchess]( & [@BEP]( is doing [#MastersOfTheSun]( doesn't mean [@fergie]( is out of the group [#BEP4ever](

Could you be the female Future is looking for?
What female should I use for my next video?
— FUTURE/FREEBANDZ (@1future) [June 2, 2017](
Is it weird that [Cameron Diaz]( kind of disappeared and no one noticed? She’s gone very, very quiet (proving once again that celebs can go underground if they want to, even in LA). There’s no new pictures of her on Instagram (she hasn’t posted since Election Day) so here’s her husband Benji.

[Jon Hamm]( doesn’t like social media. Shocker.
[Don't expect Jon Hamm to use silly social media filters anytime soon. "The point of life is not to put dog ears on yourself and post it online for everyone to see," he says in our July issue. [BexHamm](
[Jon Hamm/Kate Beckinsale](
Lainey’s not feeling well so she’s off for the rest of the day. We’ll be back on Monday with our regularly scheduled programming. Maria's Smutty Social Media is up next!
There was a screening of Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver in Los Angeles this week, hosted by JJ Abrams. According to Page Six, [Jon Hamm](, who co-stars in the film, was flirting with [Kate Beckinsale]( at the party. Per the source, Hamm was “leaning in to talk” and Beckinsale was “laughing and giggling”. They were also ignoring Beckinsale’s friend, which sounds like a great night for the friend. I’m serious—I would 100% be watching/not-watching my friend flirt with Jon Hamm and gathering ammunition for future teasing. Remember that time you ditched me at a party to flirt with Jon Hamm? She’d never live it down!
Of course, take it with a grain of salt, yadda yadda, but IF anything does come of this, I vote we call them “BexHamm” as their official Celebrity Couple Name. Also, if ever there was a separated celebrity pair well-adjusted enough to double-date with their new partners, it’s Beckinsale and Michael Sheen, who is, of course, with Sarah Silverman (who, in her usual style, got bluntly honest about the state of their [long-distance relationship](. I would be super into BexHamm and SilverSheen as do-over bestie couples. Or as a crime-fighting duo working under the cover of darkness, whichever ends up working out best.
Also attached – Jon Hamm out for coffee in Los Feliz yesterday.

[Carey Mulliganâs Spotlight](
[Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford leave Sexy Fish restaurant in London, June 1, 2017](
[Carey Mulligan]( is stepping into producer’s shoes for her new movie, On the Other Side. Mulligan will also star in the film, as Kate Webb, a Vietnam war correspondent who was captured and held by the Vietcong for twenty-three days. The project comes from an imprint of the studio that made Spotlight, so there’s an assumption of prestige and award dreams for this one.
I love this, I love to see actresses move behind the camera and have a hand in shaping their own movies. Partly because we need more women behind the camera in general, but also because I think, right now, it’s the best way for actresses to ensure they get good, complex roles. Look at Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman collaborating on Big Little Lies, and how well it turned out. And Margot Robbie and her production company, or Brie Larson and Natalie Portman making the leap to director. There aren’t enough good roles for women, so women are going out and MAKING good roles for themselves.
But, of course, accomplishment isn’t the only thing that gets a woman headlines. The Daily Mail would like us all to know [they think Mulligan is pregnant]( because she wore comfy clothes to dinner. You know how we feel about bumpwatch around here—it’s f*cking stupid. Is Carey Mulligan pregnant? Maybe! Is that the most interesting about her? No! Is wearing comfortable clothes a secret signal that you’re procreating? I’ve been pregnant my whole life! I don’t care if Carey Mulligan is pregnant. What I care about is that she’s producing her next movie, which means she’ll have a say in the hiring of the director. I’m super curious to see who ends up with the gig, and what kind of movie Mulligan makes for herself.
Here she is with [Marcus Mumford]( last night in London.

[Holly Hunter like damn](
[Holly Hunter in Strange Weather trailer ](
[Holly Hunter]( is one of those actors, I don’t care what she’s in, I’ll watch it. [Carrie Coon]( is also that type (you might not know her name yet, but you will soon, as she is THROWING DOWN on Fargo and The Leftovers right now, plus she was Ben Affleck’s sister in Gone Girl), imminently watchable—and often unrecognizable—in whatever she does. They’re starring together in a movie called Strange Weather, which comes out in July. A new trailer was released yesterday, and even in two minutes Hunter’s performance looks incredible. She plays a grieving mother searching for answers about her son’s death, and I almost don’t care about the plot. Holly Hunter in a cowboy hat, road-tripping through the South with Carrie Coon? One ticket, please.
The writer/director of the film, Katherine Dieckmann (best known for directing R.E.M videos in the 1990s, and The Adventures of Pete & Pete), gave an interview to Entertainment Weekly and she talks about creating complex, non-stereotypical characters for women of a certain age, but she also talks about Sofia Coppola and Cannes and what film festivals can mean, especially for female directors. She says: “…If anything, I’d say [festivals are] problematic. What female filmmakers need is visibility, and festivals aren’t really about visibility. It’s a little bit of a bubble. What’s more heartening to me is seeing what happened at Cannes this year, not just Sofia Coppola winning, but also Lynne Ramsay’s film [breaking through]. That has always been a male bastion of filmmaking, Cannes, except for Jane Campion winning once.”
This brings us to something Lainey talks about frequently—the power of fashion. What sets Cannes apart from other festivals is its red carpet fashion show. Cannes is a BIG DEAL with BIG DEAL FASHION, and it gets covered like an award show across entertainment media. It’s been over for a week and I’m still seeing red carpet coverage, mopping up the stuff that didn’t quite grab a headline during the fest itself. Sofia Coppola’s win is important, and more people know about it because the news of her accomplishment comes packaged with fashion write-ups about Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, and Elle Fanning.
That fashion coverage boosts the signal of everything else happening at the festival. TIFF gives out awards and TIFF has red carpets, but the fashion isn’t nearly as big a deal as it is as Cannes. I’m not saying it should be, but this is what Dieckmann is talking about. Film festivals are a bubble, but with Cannes there’s an extra element to open it up to wider attention—everyone looks at photos from the Croisette. And those photos come labelled with film titles and director names, and maybe a few more eyeballs end up on your work because of it. The power of fashion isn’t just about an actress’s brand, it can be used to invigorate a film’s chances in the wider world by [bringing attention](E2%80%99s-dress-strategy-promoting-Star-Trek-Into-Darkness/26734) to that film in the first place.
