announcement alongside Sophie Turner of Game Of Thrones who, by the way, was at the Globes and flew

[LaineyGossip.com - Calling all smuthounds!] Tuesday, January 10, 2017 [Intro for January 10, 2017] [Dominic Cooper attends as the nominations for the EE British Academy Film Awards are announced at BAFTA on January 10, 2017 in London, United Kingdom] Dear Gossips, Yesterday in my post about Ruth Negga, [my pick for best dressed at the Globes], I was so into her outfit, I forgot to write my thoughts about why her partner, Dominic Cooper, wasn’t with her for Golden Globe weekend. She attended the Globes with her Loving co-star Joel Edgerton. Dominic was in London today for the [BAFTA nominations] announcement alongside Sophie Turner of Game Of Thrones who, by the way, was at the Globes and flew back immediately. Are Ruth and Dominic still together? La La Land leads the BAFTAs with 11 nominations and Arrival and Nocturnal Animals follow with 9. Sarah’s been bitching, quite rightly, about Nocturnal Animals being overlooked by many of the awards boards. So it’s encouraging that BAFTA is recognising Tom Ford’s achievement. The film is gorgeous and gritty and it stays with you. If you haven’t already, go see it. Anyway, Ruth was also nominated for a BAFTA. But not as Best Actress, as she was at the Golden Globes and the Spirit Awards but in the Rising Star Award category. She won the same prize at the Palm Springs Film Festival a couple of weeks ago. I need you to tell me how to feel about this. Here are the other nominees for BAFTA Rising Star: Lucas Hedges, 20 Tom Holland, 20 Anya Taylor-Joy, 20 Laia Costa, 31 (she started acting in 2012) Ruth is 35 years old. She’s been acting for almost 15 years. And it’s an honour to be nominated, of course it is. I guess what I’m asking is whether or not Ruth has had the same opportunities. Like, Tom Holland? By the time he’s her age, he might have several nominations in the Best Lead or Supporting categories. Take for example Emily Blunt. Emily Blunt is currently 33 years old, younger than Ruth Negga. She is nominated for a BAFTA in the Best Actress proper category for her work in The Girl On The Train. Emily Blunt was a Rising Star BAFTA nominee… TEN YEARS AGO. Just something to consider. Let me know your thoughts. Also attached - Ruth at Jimmy Kimmel last night in LA. And, well, it’s working, because besides those Golden Globe nominations, Deadpool has also bagged a Writers’ Guild and now a Producers’ Guild nomination. The PGA is a particularly good indicator for Oscar—watch who wins at the PGA and SAG to handicap your office Oscar ballot—as the producers’ branch is one of the biggest in the Academy. The knee-jerk reaction is to dismiss Deadpool’s Oscar chances outside of the VFX and maybe sound categories, but 2016 was a weak year for film. There were good movies, but not ten solid good ones, which means the Academy—currently turning in nominations—is groping around for nominees this year. They’re not obligated to nominate ten movies, and I think it’s likely that the Best Picture breakdown is eight or nine films, probably the PGA list minus Deadpool, but as an outsider? On the chance of a surprise nomination? Working for Deadpool is Ryan Reynolds himself, present and accounted for at every award season campaign stop, with his beautiful wife and adorable daughters in tow. Everyone knows the story of how hard Reynolds & Co. worked to get Deadpool made, how they gave up money in the budget to stay true to their R-rated dreams, which is the kind of “this movie was REAL WORK” story people like to hear come Oscar time. It’s a popular movie with a well-liked star and a scrappy backstory. If it weren’t a superhero movie, it’d be a shoo-in on that alone. But of course, it is a superhero movie, and there is a STRONG anti-superhero streak in the Academy. The PGA nomination surprised me because there is a deep resentment for the superhero genre and how it has forced everyone to chase cinematic universes, and squeezed out investment in mid-range films as studios invest ever more in comic book properties. That’s why Marvel will never get a mainline Oscar nomination, and why they’ve never won even for VFX. There are people who HATE their impact and influence on the industry, and simply refuse to acknowledge them even if they do make a worthy movie. And though Deadpool is technically Fox, that “Marvel” logo in front of the film will turn those people off. I think Reynolds knows that, which is why he’s been working so hard and focusing on the story of his personal struggle to get the movie made, fighting the studio the whole way, to paint Deadpool as an underdog that defied even the massive comic book machine. He’s made himself seem like one of them, struggling to nurture his vision through this inhospitable landscape, even though his movie really is just another franchise launching pad. Which is Deadpool’s biggest hurdle—Deadpool itself. It doesn’t really hold up. It’s fun the first time, because it feels different and funny and Reynolds really is so good, but once you know the “trick” of it—the cursing and the violence—it’s just a standard superhero origin, and has all the standard problems of superhero movies: Underwritten female character, generic forgettable villain, choppy editing that undercuts emotional beats. I gave it a [mostly positive] review, but in hindsight I overrated it (as did everyone else). Fellow producers reward it for surviving development hell, but that might not be enough to impress the Academy, even in a weak year. And, as you know, he was immediately dragged for it. By some of the people at the Beverly Hilton: We are all Vince, Christian, and Naomie. [#goldenglobes] [#etalkGlobes] [pic.twitter.com/37UctvjKAi] — Elaine L. (@LaineyGossip) [January 9, 2017] And on social media… and not just by egg avatar accounts, but his peers: Thank you to Tom Hiddleston and all actors who dare to perform in projects that are shown in some of the most dangerous parts of he world. — (((Joshua Malina))) (@JoshMalina) [January 9, 2017] Tom has now apologised. So it was because he was nervous. THAT’s why he decided to tell us how awesome his series was through the good people working in South Sudan. Nerves. And “inelegance”. Because if he were more polished, it would have been OK? I’m pretty sure that’s the first time Tom Hiddleston has been accused of lacking polish. And he’s the only one doing it. Polish isn’t what he lacks. What he needs to lack more of is pretention. I’m not convinced that he was nervous. This, to me, is what happened to Tom that night: Hugh Laurie, his co-star in The Night Manager, won a Golden Globe before Tom that night. And Hugh’s acceptance speech was wry and smart and people responded to it. So then Tom wins. He sat through Hugh’s remarks as a “supporting” actor. And he’s just won for a “lead” actor. That, in my opinion, is where he is motivation was. How do I do as well as Hugh? What do I say to make people remember what I said. What I did. How I moved them. I call it a case of the Justin Timberlakes. Should we now call it a case of the Tom Hiddlestons? Here's Tom at a Golden Globes after party last night in Los Angeles. Henson and Janelle Monae attend the 'Hidden Figures' New York special screening on December 10, 2016 in New York City] Hidden Figures had a big opening weekend. There are no words to express how happy this makes me. The fact that this film made money has power. It means that, hopefully, we’ll get to see more stories about the nameless, faceless women of colour who made history. As Lainey [mentioned in her intro yesterday], I made it about one minute and 30 seconds into the film before the tears started. I promise, if you have a soul and a pulse, you will love this movie and you will FEEL this movie. At one point, I looked over and I swear I saw Lainey wipe away a tear. She will probably deny this. It’s hard not to be moved by such an incredible story. We knew going in that it would be a great story. The good news is that Hidden Figures is also a great film. I left the theatre inspired, in awe but also, a bit enraged. I am frustrated that it took us all this long to learn about these women. HOW did this story go untold for so long? If you’ve been paying attention, you know that Hidden Figures is based on the book by [Margot Lee Shetterly] and follows the story of three of the unsung heroes of NASA, members of the West Computing Group, women who were referred to as “coloured computers,” and segregated from their white peers. Katherine Johnson ([Taraji P. Hensen]), Dorothy Vaughn ([Octavia Spencer]) and Mary Jackson ([Janelle Monae]) were integral in sending astronaut John Glenn to space to complete his 1962 orbit of Earth. The film follows these three women as they navigate their loves lives and friendships but most importantly their careers while dealing with bullsh-t bigoted coworkers and a system set up for them to fail. The film only scratches the surface of the racist roadblocks each of these women had to face on their paths to greatness. Even with the film’s slightly glossed-over look at racial tensions in the 60s, there were people sitting behind us who actively gasped out loud at every racist thing that happened. They had “coloured” bathrooms? Gasp! White people wouldn’t drink out of the same coffee pot as black people? Gasp! These three brilliant women had to put up with things that are shocking to think of today and yet, they rose. HOW did we not know them? Octavia Spencer’s Dorothy Vaughn fights for the title of Supervisor of the West Computing Group, a job she’s already doing without the recognition. Vaughn is a woman who champions other women and uses her promotion to negotiate for the jobs of the women around her. She’s a badass. Octavia Spencer is a force in this film and she deserves all of the nominations but the two words out of all our mouths after the film were “JANELLE. MONAE.” Janelle. Freaking. Monae. She was a revelation in Moonlight and she’s even better in Hidden Figures. She delivers a lot of the comedic relief as the spunky Mary Jackson but she also nails one of the most tear-jerking scenes when Jackson stands up to a judge so she can attend an all-white school to become an engineer. Yes, Mary Jackson had to go to court to fight for her right to learn. She went on to become NASA’s first black female engineer. I’m not crying. You’re crying. In the math nerd biopics we’re used to, like A Beautiful Mind, The Theory of Everything, and The Imitation Game, the actor who played the lead got all the love. Even though this is an ensemble film, Taraji P. Henson should not be overlooked. [The Atlantic’s review of Hidden Figures] marvels that the film is not a “tale of ego” like the aforementioned movies. In Hidden Figures, Taraji’s Katherine is a meek single mother who simply doesn’t have the luxury of being an egotistical, difficult genius. When she’s called on to join a special task group attempting to get Glenn into orbit, Johnson becomes the only black woman in a room full of white men, including Kevin Costner and Jim Parsons, playing an insufferable nerd with a superiority complex. Taraji P Henson brings such a wonderful vulnerability and empathy to this woman who just put her head down and did the work. A scene where Katherine is getting berated for taking 40 minutes to go to the bathroom because “her” bathroom is on the other side of the f-cking campus is the first and really only time we see her get angry. It’s the only time she raises her voice or dares to let tears form in her eyes for her coworkers to see. In a stirring speech, she explains that she has to be twice as much, under ten times the scrutiny and tough circumstances for a fraction of the respect. It should be Henson’s awards submission scene. It’s the scene I’m still thinking about days later and my blood boils every time I do. If you are a woman of colour working in a predominately white space, you know the feeling of holding in your emotions so you won’t get labelled as “angry” or “uncooperative.” I won’t pretend I know exactly what it was like to be a black woman in the 1950s and 60s but decades later, this movie is for every black girl who has exceeded her limitations and excelled in spite of a world that makes us feel unwanted and undervalued. In promotion for the film, NASA tweeted this: Learn about today's modern figures who are helping us take the next giant leap in exploration: [ [#HiddenFigures] [pic.twitter.com/ommM5YVbB8] — NASA (@NASA) [January 6, 2017] A lot of the responses were along the lines of, “it’s racist to only highlight the black women! Why are there only black women in this post? That’s unfair!” These comments are the worst by the worst people but this film emphasizes why specifically giving black women the credit they goddamn deserve is important. Even if they have been ignored until now, these women were a part of history. They contributed to the legacy of a country that continues to give so little back to them. Especially now, the recognition of the competence and patriotism of people who look like Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn and Mary Jackson is imperative. For every woman of colour and every woman working in STEM, we see you. We thank you. Keep up the good work. It’s the best sh-t. This is my favourite story to come out of the Golden Globes. This story has everything: pettiness, ego, manners, beards, and dramatic exits. And it involves multiple celebrities. According to [PEOPLE]: Despite his three daughters sharing the title of Miss Golden Globes and having the role of introducing best picture, Sylvester Stallone was nowhere in sight during the show. Now it appears that his absence was due to a seating issue at his assigned table, which included Manchester by the Sea star Casey Affleck, the film’s producer Matt Damon and its writer-director, Kenneth Lonergan. According to multiple sources, things got testy after Stallone, 70, and his wife Jennifer Flavin walked up to their table during the show’s opening number to find only one available open seat. One show source tells PEOPLE that no one, including Affleck, 41, and Damon, made an effort to accommodate the Stallones, who grew frustrated and seemingly embarrassed, and eventually retreated to the green room backstage. The couple would not return to the table and watched the show from backstage instead. Another source close to the situation agrees there was “confusion” over the seating but insists there was no ill will towards Stallone from Affleck or anyone at the table. “There weren’t enough seats and so there was confusion, but it wasn’t personal against him,” says the source, adding that an additional chair was brought to the table and seats facing the stage were eventually freed up. (At that point, Stallone had little interest in returning to his table to sit with Affleck and the rest of the Manchester group, several sources tell PEOPLE). Later in the evening, Affleck, who went on to win a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama, crossed paths with Stallone in the green room and attempted to apologize for the seating snafu, but Stallone was not receptive. Stallone’s rep did not comment on the specifics of the report, but offered, “The story you refer to is an interesting rumor – but a rumor nonetheless. Sylvester Stallone had a wonderful evening attending and presenting at the Golden Globes and celebrating with his family and friends.” This is the second table drama celebrity story I’ve read in as many weeks. The other one involved David Beckham and a millionaire called Ron Dennis [over reserved tables] at a resort in the Maldives on New Year’s Eve. They apparently ended up shouting at each other over who could sit where. Seriously, seating is always a problem. People get very territorial over seats. Celebrities get territorial over seats because they are narcissists and hate sharing. So basically [Sly Stallone] had what my friend Lara calls a suck attack because [Matt Damon] and [Casey Affleck] are the new Heathers. This I believe. All of it. I believe that Sly, a megalomaniac in his own right, would feel slighted that Matt and Casey didn’t hurry around and get the situation sorted out. And I also believe that Matt and Casey sat there and didn’t behave like actual human beings to be part of a solution because they were there first and assumed that someone else would take care of it because someone always takes care of it. So here we are. It all comes down to one word: MINE! Chairs, tables, toys, awards, women, MINE! [Click here for the rest of the photos.] Posted at 5:03 PM [Tom Hardy on dogs and cats] [Tom Hardy at the LA premiere of FX's 'Taboo' held at the Directors Guild of America Theater, January 9, 2017] [Tom Hardy]’s Taboo debuts tonight. Sarah will be writing about it tomorrow. Here’s Tom last night at the LA premiere. Over the last couple of weeks, he’s been doing American press to promote the series, more than usual, at least that’s what it feels like. Perhaps because he’s producing. And he worked on it with his dad, who he calls “Chips”. In a new [interview with Vulture] Tom discusses at length his approach to his characters and the dark roles he’s drawn to. He also reveals that he sketches his characters by hand, to get to know them, to start figuring out how to play them. In addition to those sketches, he also draws pictures for his kids, including a cat called Marmalade. Marmalade is the star of the bedtime stories that Tom tells his son, Louis. Speaking of bedtime stories… the holidays got in the way of me posting Tom’s bedtime story for CBeeBies. If you haven’t seen this yet and he does it for you, you might want to look into birth control. I love his commitment to this reading. What I love more though is his dog Woody, who accompanies him during this performance. Woody is quite content to sleep in Tom’s lap the entire time and not be a nuisance and snore through the audio. My dogs are snorers, especially the younger one, Elvis. They also sleep like kings, territorial and kicking. Like if this had been Elvis during the bedtime story, he would have changed position at least once and stretched his paws up in the air. In other Tom Hardy dog news, he also spoke to Vanity Fair, ostensibly about Taboo but, [as the writer notes], Tom really just wanted to talk about “the purity of dogs”: “They’re just so clean and straightforward, and they wear their heart on their chest. You know what you’re getting with a dog.” He lets out a gruff, gleeful chuckle. “I love that. Unfettered companionship and loyalty in the most boring of manners. The life and the soul is right next to you, keeping the heart ticking over in the room. You know when a dog’s around, there’s good times. . . . It’s like, why would it choose to be around us? What the hell does it see in us? We don’t deserve them! What does it see in us that it’s so like, ‘Well, I wanna be with you, you’re awesome?’ I’m not that awesome. You’re awesome.” Most dogs. Totally. I’ve had 3 dogs. Of my 3 dogs, only 1 of them has been how Tom describes. That would be Barney. Marcus, who left us in 2015, was a judgy, selfish asshole, like me. He did however have a sweetness to him at the end of the night, when he was tired; he used us for closeness and warmth. Elvis, the puppy, however, is morally bankrupt, is incapable of remorse, and has no respect for others. As noted in that article, it was worth considering because it’s not the National Enquirer or Star Magazine or the Daily Mail and because the Clooneys have been pretty low profile the last couple of months. And also because Amal’s been seen a few times at fertility clinics in New York and London. Last night [George Clooney] and Amal were in London to celebrate Netflix’s documentary, The White Helmets, about volunteer workers in Syria who rush into areas that are attacked to rescue survivors. He talked to reporters there [about the film] and also supported Meryl Streep's comments at the Golden Globes. As for Amal? I heard from someone who was there last night who says that Amal didn’t drink, sipped water all night. Amal’s been known to enjoy a cocktail. So. Take that for what it’s worth. Maybe it’s a dry January for her. Maybe she had too much the night before. Or… maybe you’re zooming in on these photos and looking extra closely.
