[LaineyGossip.com - Calling all smuthounds!] Thursday, November 24, 2016 [Intro for November 24, 2016] [Taiwanese firefighters calendar] Dear Gossips, A couple of months ago, I read an article by Allison P Davis for Travel + Leisure about her experience as a black American woman [Tindering her way across Europe] and how that compared to her dating experiences at home, where, as she writes, “…the unfortunate truth about being a black woman dating in America right now: we are considered the most undatable demographic”. According to data collected from dating apps, in the United States “Asian men and black women receive the least messages of anybody, and practically nobody responds to their messages if they dare initiate a conversation”. So Allison goes to London and Berlin and Stockholm and she keeps her phone on and… well… as she puts it, the trip turned into a “sexual sabbatical—a way to remind myself that I am f-ckable—not invisible, not exempt from a narrative of desire just because OkCupid data indicated that I am in the least desirable group of daters”. I was reminded of Allison’s piece earlier this week when Buzzfeed posted an article about the [Taiwanese firefighters calendar]. Firemen posing half-naked for calendars is not new. But, for most of you reading this, the calendars you’ve seen don’t feature an all-Asian team of firefighters posing half-naked. While the [New Taipei Fire Department] has been releasing calendars for the last 9 years, for some reason, this year’s version went viral. In North America, Asian men are not often culturally represented as heartthrobs. It’s a complicated discussion, analysing why and how we are attracted to who we’re attracted to. In part, it’s also conditioning; it’s also what we’ve been told is attractive, desirable, and more often than not, especially in the Western world, we’ve been told that the physical attributes that determine attraction favour some and exclude many others. So I’m not mad that the Taiwanese firefighters calendar is getting some attention here. Their supporters are challenging the idea that Asian men can’t be “hunks”. [Click here] to see the photos. Be. @discovery_uk] A photo posted by 7dub (@7dub) on Nov 3, 2016 at 8:44am PDT [Click here for the rest of the photos.] Posted at 6:37 PM [Warren Beatty in Rules Don’t Apply] [Warren Beatty attends the Premiere of 20th Century Fox's 'Rules Don't Apply' at the Castro Theatre on November 21, 2016 in San Francisco, California] It’s been fifteen years since [Warren Beatty] has appeared in a movie, and nearly twenty since he last directed a film, but Beatty returns to film—in front of and behind the camera—with Rules Don’t Apply, his long-gestating Howard Hughes movie. On the one hand, it’s a reminder of what a unique presence Beatty is, as both actor and director, but on the other it’s also a case study of what happens when you dwell a little too long on one cinematic subject. Rules Don’t Apply is a mostly charming throwback romantic comedy, and a largely entertaining biopic of Howard Hughes, but it’s also a mess. Beatty definitely knew how he wanted this movie to look, I’m less sure he really knew what he wanted it to say. For being “Warren Beatty’s Howard Hughes movie”, Hughes—played by Beatty—doesn’t show up until almost a half an hour in. It seems that, when faced with such an expansive and domineering character, Beatty decided to use the side door and grounds his movie on Frank Forbes ([Alden Ehrenreich], tapping into the same Art Deco suavity that he did for Hail, Caesar!), and Marla Mabrey ([Lily Collins]), a couple of young upstarts in Hughes’s employ. Frank dreams of being an entrepreneur, like Hughes, and Marla is a Virginia beauty queen brought to Hollywood to join Hughes’s harem of starlets he has stashed around the city. Frank is assigned to be Marla’s driver, and the two immediately start making calf eyes at one another, but a strict no-inter-office-dating rule of Hughes’s keeps them apart. That, and their religion. She’s devoutly Baptist, he’s less devoutly Methodist. Both young people come to Hughes as moral and driven, but the longer they spend in Hughes’s sphere of influence—and the more direct contact they get with their eccentric boss—the more their principles start dropping by the wayside, until inevitably both have compromised their once ironclad morals. It’s not a bad theme, but it weakens dramatically once Hughes enters the picture and takes it over. Ehrenreich and Collins acquit themselves well, dealing with some clunky dialogue—courtesy Beatty, who also wrote the script—but otherwise enjoying playing characters in a throwbacky mid-century romance. Rules isn’t just set in the 1950s, it’s made to feel like a classic film, with exaggerated theatrical characters and old-school film techniques like rear projection and background matte painting being used. Cinematographer Caleb Deschanel (who lensed The Black Stallion, a beautifully shot film and a masterclass unto itself) lights and shoots Rules flawlessly—it really does look and feel like a film from a previous era. But it’s Beatty who defines it, once he finally makes his appearance as Hughes. His storytelling might be a little wobbly, but his acting is spot on. He portrays Hughes in the latter part of his life, when he’s already withdrawing from public life and becoming increasingly isolated as his mental health deteriorates. Beatty, with his bona fide Movie Star aura, plays Hughes as a tremendously charismatic man who sucks everyone near him into his self-destructive orbit, for better or worse—mostly worse. The secret weapon of Rules is [Matthew Broderick] as Levar Mathis, Hughes’s long-suffering assistant, and Candice Bergen as Nadine, Hughes’s secretary. Nothing against Ehrenreich and Collins, who are charming in and of themselves, but the best stuff in Rules is the long-suffering patience and indulgence of Hughes’s devoted personal staff. Levar throws temper tantrums just like his mercurial boss, and Broderick is so funny and such a great match for Beatty as a scene partner that Levar is ten times as entertaining as Frank. And Candice Bergen is grossly underutilized. Rules Don’t Apply is a good reminder of everything Warren Beatty has to offer as an actor and filmmaker, but Howard Hughes proves overwhelming as a subject and he can’t quite focus his film to form a cohesive story around the man. Beatty’s performance shows all the care and interest in Hughes he has nurtured for decades, but his script and the film itself show that he couldn’t quite pin down Hughes as a subject. Rules Don’t Apply has moments of being a cute rom-com, and at other times is a fascinating character study of genius running out of control, but the sum total is a messy, slightly out of focus portrait of a larger than life man. [Miley Cyrus] is one of the people she adores. Kathy has taken it to Miley in her stand-up. And you know how super-sensitive celebrities can be when they’re mocked and made fun of. When Kathy met up with Miley after skewering her though, it was cool. Or, rather, it was “kewl”, which is how Miley says “cool”. Miley was wearing a tank top that was sheer so that in photos, you could see her entire breast. When Kathy told Miley what was happening, Miley, instead of covering up, pulled her top up to her neck instead and started grooving her hips. Kathy fell in love with her. This is probably the one thing I have in common with Miley – I love flashing people too. Anyway, in that same story, which took place a few years ago, Kathy also wanted to tell Miley not to marry [Liam Hemsworth] because she was “way too young to get married to that f-cking stiff”. As we know, they didn’t end up getting married. They broke up for a couple of years and now they’re back together, so maybe Liam’s not so “f-cking stiff” anymore. Miley turned 24 yesterday. Followed by outrage, like the kind that explodes on Twitter every 5 seconds. Hard Boiled?!? THE Hard Boiled? Turns out there’s a comic book called Hard Boiled by Frank Miller and Geoff Darrow and the studio is hoping to adapt it as another collaboration between Tom and director Ben Wheatley; they’ve previously worked together on High-Rise. Sarah reviewed the film [here]. My association with Hard Boiled, however, is not a comic but Hong Kong cinema. Hard Boiled is one of John Woo’s most famous films. John Woo’s work has profoundly informed many Western directors, including, perhaps most notably, Quentin Tarantino. A few years ago JoBlo called Hard Boiled “[the best movie you never saw]”, starring [Chow Yun Fat], the legend, and [Tony Leung Chiu Wai]. So, basically, I thought [Tom Hiddleston] was playing the part of Chow Yun Fat. Now you understand my initial horror. Like, I’m sure Tom Hiddleston will be a great comic action star, whatever, but he is NOT Chow Yun Fat, Jesus Christ. Here’s Tony Leung a couple of weeks ago promoting a new movie. My first serious boyfriend is from St Kitts and Nevis. He’s one of the only boyfriends I don’t despite. (Hi Dwyane!) Also my friend Karen T is from St Kitts and Nevis. This post is for her as she wrote me yesterday to say that she would be watching the coverage with more than her usual interest. Harry is travelling to many countries that he’s visited before with his mother and brother. St Kitts and Nevis is one of those places. Yesterday, he spent time with the Nevis Turtle Group and released baby turtles into the ocean at Lovers Beach. Some of these turtles will grow to 900 lbs! The Nevis Turtle Group “[aims to protect turtles and increase their population]”. Later on, Harry was shown where the turtles nest. After spending time with the baby turtles on Lovers Beach, Harry attended a dinner reception at Government House. There were no mentions of an upcoming engagement and honeymoon. He’ll be in St Lucia today. In early October, there was all kinds of speculation that Taylor would be dropping an album. [The Washington Post] claimed to have cracked the code, predicting that she’d release the follow-up to 1989 either on October 23 or November 13. Both days have long passed. We are now almost at the end of November. It’s looking less and less likely that it’ll happen this year, unless she decides to make it a December surprise on her birthday, December 13, with no promotion, no buildup, the way Beyoncé did it with self-titled three years ago on… guess what day? December 13, 2013. But Drake, Taylor’s Apple “boyfriend” is also planning a December release. He promised that his new album, his second of the year, called More Life, would be dropping next month, although no specific date has been confirmed. Yesterday [there were reports] that it will be December 3. Would it be advantageous for Apple Music’s two prized artists to release their albums back to back?
