[Intro for November 1, 2016]
[Adele covers Vanity Fair]
Dear Gossips,
Adele’s tour has entered its final month. She will wrap it up on November 21 in Phoenix. As previously mentioned, she may never go on a tour this extensive ever again. And this point is hinted at a few times in her new cover feature for [Vanity Fair], although she does say she’d consider a Las Vegas residency, but probably not for a few years, since Angelo is getting to be school age now.
Last year, at exactly this time, Adele covered [Rolling Stone]. I LOVED that interview. I [loved it so much]. It was how authoritative she sounded. It was how confident she was – not confident for the sake of being confident, for the way it reads on a t-shirt, but confident because she’s done the work, she knows the work, she is the work.
This year, for Vanity Fair, what’s most notable to me is how comfortable she is. And, in particular, how comfortable she is with her success. It’s not easy for women - first to get there, to find and seize opportunity, to extract the most out of those opportunities because, as we know, we get fewer of them, and then, once those opportunities have been fully maximised, to feel like we deserved them in the first place. Adele pulls up in a Porsche. Designer bracelets hang casually off her arm. She now owns a house in Beverly Hills. She is protected by personal security. She will only let one woman in the world style her eyebrows. All of these details are listed casually in the Vanity Fair piece, during a conversation that spans motherhood, mental health, money, and more. And none of it is rationalised, by which I mean that she doesn’t go out of her way to justify the seemingly superficial markers of her success. That’s not to say that she worries about being perceived superficially. Adele speaks quite candidly about how her worldview has changed since becoming a parent, how her art has changed since becoming a parent, how some people around her have changed since she’s become a parent – and, most remarkably, since she’s become a wealthy woman. Adele can talk about all of that, authentically, and still keep whatever it is that she has to keep to herself to herself.
Adele, by her own admission, has changed. She reveals that 21 was mostly written while she was drunk, indulging – almost revelling – in her own personal drama, which, in her mind, is why it’s so good, why “I can see from an outsider’s perspective that I will never write songs as good as the ones that are on (that album)”. I appreciate that she’s sharing with us here her own musings about whether or not her creativity will be curbed by her responsibility. Adele might be more responsible now but artistic output can also come from change. And she herself has forecast it. Here’s how she describes her relationship with her boyfriend Simon Konecki:
“I have no desire to be with anyone in show business, because we all have egos. He’s not threatened by any stage of my life that I’m going for, and that’s an amazing thing. It’s the most serious relationship I’ve ever been in; we’ve got a child together and we live together. After releasing my first album, all the other people I ever was with were so insecure about themselves—they couldn’t handle it at all. When I try to describe this to my friends they don’t always get it, because they go out with people that are our age, but Simon is already who he is, and I’m still becoming who I’m going to be. He’s confident. He’s perfect.”
Who is Adele going to be? I can’t wait to find out. Or, rather, I can’t wait to hear it.
Also, one more observation: Vanity’s story on Adele opens with a quote, not from Adele, but from Beyoncé about Adele. Beyoncé is quoted TWICE in this piece – about Adele. As you know, Beyoncé talking to anyone about anything, even herself, is rare. For Beyoncé to agree to comment on Adele is noteworthy. Beyoncé considers Adele to be a peer.
Beyoncé and Adele are expected to be heavily nominated at the Grammys. I have been hoping for a Beyoncé-Adele performance at the Grammys for months. Please, please, please let this happen. [Click here] to read more about Adele at Vanity Fair.
Yours in gossip,
Lainey

[Chris Evans and Jenny Slate barely look at each other]
[Jenny Slate performs during Festival Supreme 2016 at The Shrine Expo Hall on October 29, 2016 in Los Angeles, California]
[Chris Evans] and [Jenny Slate] met while filming a movie called Gifted last year. Then, in the early summer, Slate was getting divorced and hooking up with Evans, in a bit of timing that would have drawn a lot more side-eye if Evans was the one bailing on a marriage. But because Jenny Slate isn’t that famous, especially compared to the new #1 in the Worldwide Avenger Power Rankings—Chris Evans/Cap is officially more popular than RDJ/Iron Man—the “nerdy girl gets the prom king” narrative pretty well worked out for the public depiction of their romance.
I mention this because the first trailer for Gifted has come out and scenes that include both Evans and Slate are barely included. Evans is obviously the star here, the most famous marketable face attached, but Slate’s role, to my understanding, isn’t small, and there is a romance angle with their characters. You would not know it by looking at this trailer, which focuses squarely on the family drama between a guy fighting with his mother over the fate of his math genius niece. Gifted does not look terrible—the director is Marc Webb, who made (500) Days of Summer before Spider-Man waylaid him for a few years—but it does look a LOT like the Jodie Foster film Little Man Tate.
The message is clear though. Chris Evans and Jenny Slate’s real life relationship will not be a marketing asset for Gifted. At least not so far. Evans has really clamped down on his private life and public image since taking on Captain America, so this isn’t terribly surprising. He’s been more visible with Slate than previous girlfriends, but right now it doesn’t look like that will extend to selling Gifted as their romance fairytale meet cute. Probably because Slate was still married when they met, and they’ve successfully navigated that hurdle. Why open it up to more speculation, even for the sake of a film that will need all the marketing help it can get.

Another year, another round of people outraged that “PC Culture” is encroaching on their dumb Halloween costumes. This is like the non-existent “war on Christmas” – a paranoid conspiracy people turn to when they feel their grip on power starting to slip. You can dress up as almost anyone if you do it properly and respectfully.

Remember when [Leo surprised Jonah on the street]? Nick Kroll surprising Josh Charles is so much more adorable.

[Leighton & Adam as themselves]
[Adam Brody and Leighton Meester step out for breakfast in LA, October 31, 2016]
[Leighton Meester] and [Adam Brody] stepped out together for breakfast yesterday. Doesn’t happen often. [Jessica Chastain] just gave an interview [to C Magazine] with this quote about being a celebrity in a relationship:
“In this industry you can set your own privacy. If I go to certain restaurants with my boyfriend I know we’re going to get photographed. But when the public is involved in your relationship…they can demand or ask questions because they feel like they have an ownership of it, because you sold it. That means they have a say in your private life.”
Exactly. So she doesn’t go to the “certain restaurants”. And what of the people who DO go to those “certain restaurants”? It is not impossible to be famous and private. The fact is, as we’ve seen again and again, many people who are famous manage to do it. Like Leighton and Adam, on Halloween as themselves, as not as our beloved Blair and Seth, which could have become a waaayyyyy bigger thing if they had let it. Hypocritically, they’re still a big thing for me though. That which protects and preserves them makes me love them.

[Beyoncé and Jay Z out in New York with Blue Ivy on Halloween ]
Well. I’m a f-cking stupid asshole. Yesterday [when I posted] about [Beyoncé] I was wondering about [Jay Z]’s Dwayne Wanye outfit, sort of wishing that they would have saved it for a time when Beyoncé could be Whitley with him. And then, on Halloween proper, they do this.

Yeah, it’s better than Dwayne and Whitley, of course it is. I’m just the ignorant c-nt who foolishly didn’t think Beyoncé would keep bringing it on Halloween with her own, better, best, ideas.
You know who had a great idea though? [Shonda Rhimes]. Shonda did Halloween in Formation this year. Check it:

There are three ways to do Halloween: sexy, scary, and funny. For me it’s never sexy. Because sexy, to me, automatically says “uncomfortable”. My Halloween requirement the last few years has been pants or robe, everything below the knee and preferably, very loose. Yesterday on The Social I was Sporty Spice. My costume was a… TRACK SUIT! Come on!

[Ryan Reynolds and Jake G made a movie, apparently]
[Life trailer stills]
Did anyone notice this happening? Somehow [Ryan Reynolds] and [Jake Gyllenhaal] made a movie together and we didn’t notice. But the first trailer is here to prove that it happened. The movie is called Life and it’s about people trapped on a space station with an alien that may or may not be eating them, so it’s basically Alien. Alien is a great f*cking movie, though, so if you’re going to obviously knock off a space invader movie, that’s a good one to go with. This is not an insult—there are only three space stories to date, so all space movies are basically remakes of Alien, Star Wars, or 2001 (Man vs. Alien, Man vs. Man, Man vs. Technology—IN SPACE.)
Alien overtones aside, Life looks pretty good. Tense, wiry, with a solid cast that also includes Rebecca Ferguson and Hiroyuki Sanada, veteran of another space movie, the underrated Sunshine, and also the good seasons of Revenge. The meat of the trailer is, of course, given over to Reynolds and Jake G, who seem to end up at odds with one another. There’s only one way to solve any conflict that arises between two Very Handsome Men—it’s a walk-off! In space! Of course, space walk-offs end with the loser being ejected out of the airlock. Life is set for a Memorial Day 2017 release, so this could be a sneaky summer surprise amidst the superhero glut.
Ryan Reynolds is, of course, on Taylor Swift’s [Friend] [List]. Jake G is a Swift Ex. Do you think they ever talk about it?

No.
NSYNC?

It was Trolls. Of course it was Trolls. The movie with the never-ending press tour.

What else would he do? It’s always self promo. Specifically HIS self promo. Jessica Biel recently hit up a couple of film festivals to promote a film she produced and starred in called The Book Of Love. JT composed the music for it. He even did her a favour and showed up at a couple of the screenings. You think he’s mentioned The Book Of Love at all on his Instagram?

[Taylor Swiftâs Halloween]
[Taylor Swift and friends on Halloween]
In my post about [Taylor Swift]’s [pre-Halloween weekend whereabouts yesterday] I wrote that whatever she was doing, whether or not she was in London, she was definitely back in the US on Monday and that we’d see by last night how she does Halloween. And, indeed, we did.
She was with her girlfriends, including [Gigi Hadid], and of course, the occasion was documented on social media. It wasn’t the quite the spectacle that #Taymerica was, but enough that everyone’s talking about it. In particular, because of Taylor’s costume:

And that’s the headline: Taylor Swift borrows the actual Deadpool costume from [Ryan Reynolds], so it’s a fanboy geek kid dream, and the most noteworthy one of the group, and, perhaps, among all celebrities. Also, free marketing for Deadpool after the sequel just [lost its director]. If all that wasn’t clear enough, [Blake Lively] approved:
