[Intro for October 5, 2016]
[Adele ]
Dear Gossips,
Adele. ADELE!
Adele let out last night just as the Jays and Orioles were in the 9th inning, tied. We made it home to see Edwin’s walk-off homerun. It almost felt as though she planned it that way – gave us a perfect performance and sent us away in time to finish the game.
As she told us last night, there are only 18 shows to go before the end of this tour. And the thing with Adele is, as she told us last night, she’s not big on touring and, well, she’s probably not going to be touring again for a long, long time. Maybe 10 years. It’s not like she hasn’t been obvious about it. Her kid is getting to school age. She doesn’t really want to be all over the place when he’s in school. My point is, if you haven’t already, and it’s in the budget, and there’s a possibility for you to see her – SEE HER. Even if you have to go alone. It might actually be better to be alone. I was alone.
There were 7 of us trying to get tickets last year. It was so f-cking stressful I think I even wrote about the meltdown that was happening with all of us logging on and queuing online. In the end, we were able to get 4 seats together and 3 singles. After our group dinner, Duana, Cat, and I were the ones who took the single seats last night, several rows and an entire section apart from each other. Didn’t matter. You don’t need anyone else. You just need Adele. For me, the moment she came onstage, it was like she was singing just to me, for me, talking just to me, for me. By the halfway point of the show, the concert became a duet, featuring Adele and Lainey. Everyone around me had to endure my singing, in full voice, volume dialed to max, arms up in the air. Not that they cared, because all of us were lost in our own personal, private Adele bubbles. And they were doing the same thing. I know Duana and Cat were doing the same thing. I know Duana was sobbing. By herself, sob-singing every lyric, to the point where a perfect stranger reached out and squeezed her shoulder reassuringly, as if to say, Feel it, girl. I know. I KNOW.
It’s magic, when an artist can do that. When she can take your loneliness and turn it into an asset. If I could go again, I’d sit alone again. Duana’s actually decided to do that. She’s buying a single ticket for Friday and re-experiencing the whole thing by herself, again. I’m telling you, you don’t need anyone else when you have Adele. So don’t be afraid to be by yourself. Adele is there for you.
Yours in gossip,
Lainey

[Kit & Rose did not break up]
[Kit Harington and Rose Leslie in Belfast, October 4, 2016]
According to the photo agency distributing these shots, there have been rumours lately about [Kit Harington] and [Rose Leslie] breaking up. I must have missed those rumours. And I'm grateful for that because it woulda been a waste of time. Here they are, together, in Belfast this week. Not broken up.
But Belfast. Where Game Of Thrones is in production. Jon Snow has reported for duty. Is she getting a ghost cameo too?

[Kieferâs No Quitter]
[Kiefer Sutherland]
When I first saw the headline “Why Kiefer Sutherland Decided Not to Give Up Alcohol” I had to read it a few times. Usually headlines like this refer to someone who has decided to quit drinking, not someone who has actively decided to keep boozing. But this is [Kiefer Sutherland], someone who has not been shy about his love of bars. It’s gotten him into trouble, including serving jail time for a DUI while he was starring on (the then super popular) 24. He also headbutted one of the [Proenza Schouler designers]. So he’s done some really stupid, dangerous things. But he’s also done this, my favourite YouTube video.
We all know a drinker like Kiefer in real life – the person who can go either way. A night out with a type like Kiefer will either be a I’ll-remember-this-on-my-deathbed story, or you are going to be out on the street at 3 a.m. in the rain trying to hail a cab, swearing that you will never go out in public with him/her again.
That is the allure of someone like Kiefer… especially at 25. Maybe 35? Kiefer is 49. You would think that kind of “fun” has an expiration date, but not for him. In a new [interview with PEOPLE], he is read back some of his lyrics (is there anything worse than song lyrics being read out loud without music?) that people interpreted as a love song but he actually wrote them about alcohol. He concedes that alcohol is his greatest escape and source of pleasure, but it’s also been a direct cause of all the bad sh-t that’s happened in his life (in other words, he gets bombed and acts the fool).
But here I am torn. I want to say Kiefer should grow up, maybe consider a juice cleanse, but then I go back to this.
And he goes back to it, too. He loves showing that clip. Kiefer drinks so he can jump into Christmas trees and as long as he is smart about it (as in getting a driver and keeping his hands and head to himself), should we deny him that? Should we deny ourselves Drunk Kiefer? Should Kiefer deny himself Drunk Kiefer?
Well, he’s decided it’s a definite no. He’s happy to be a boozehound. And why would he really want to give up the good times? Jack Bauer is a household name on the same level as MacGyver and 24 made it rain for him. The DUIs haven’t hurt. Aging, um, more quickly than his peers (he’s 3 years younger than Rob Lowe) hasn’t hurt him. And he even has a new show, Designated Survivor (Jack Bauer wears glasses!), on ABC and CTV.
Quitting would probably mess up his flow. And there’s no way he’d get this height sober.

[Riggins in London]
[Taylor Kitsch on the set of American Assassin in London, October 5, 2016]
Did you know that Friday Night Lights premiered 10 years ago this week? For some of us it’s been a decade of Clear Eyes and Full Hearts. For others, ahem, those of you who ignored my nagging and only just gave in recently, it’s been a couple of years. For all of us, it’s been …well… it’s been hard, missing them so much. But please, that doesn’t mean we need a movie. The more time that passes, the more convinced I become that we don’t need a movie.
Anyway, here’s Tim Riggins in London shooting a new movie. Haven’t seen [Taylor Kitsch] around in a while. And I’m happy to see that he’s getting work. Because True Detective Season 2 was sh-t and did not do for him what it was supposed to have done for him. And, as we’ve seen, career-wise for Taylor, there were already a couple of setbacks. But he’s back in a leather jacket and boots (the jeans could maybe fit a little better) and this is a film called American Assassin and Michael Keaton is also in it so… promising?

[Demiâs Social Media Playbook]
[Demi Lovato covers Glamour Magazine]
[Demi Lovato]’s [new interview with Glamour] is making headlines because: [Taylor Swift]. The popular headline is that Demi “slammed” or “shaded” Taylor, which… I’ll let you read the quotes for yourself.
GLAMOUR: And you’ve said before, in regard to Taylor Swift, “Don’t brand yourself a feminist if you don’t do the work.” How do you see yourself doing the work?
Demi: Just speaking out. I’m not afraid to talk about the fact that women get paid less than men in the United States and how unfair that is.Talking about it at all is doing the work. And I think every woman does her part in some way. But I think in certain situations, certain people could be doing more if they’re going to claim that as part of their brand. To be honest, and this will probably get me in trouble, I don’t see anybody in any sort of squad that has a normal body. It’s kind of this false image of what people should look like. And what they should be like, and it’s not real.
So the interviewer brings up Taylor Swift, and Demi leans in. She talks not only about feminism as a branding tool, but also, unprompted, brings up the Squad.
GLAMOUR: Well, there are many kinds of “normal” bodies. I think what you’re getting at is there’s just one type of body in that squad.
Demi: It’s not realistic. And I think that having a song and a video about tearing Katy Perry down, that’s not women’s empowerment. We all do things that aren’t, but I have to ask myself, Am I content with calling myself a feminist? Yes, because I speak out.
What Demi is saying isn’t that controversial, and it is a point that has been brought up numerous times. Even a casual gossip follower knows that Taylor uses feminism as part of her brand. And the Squad… well, anyone with eyes can see that Taylor likes his friends like Leonardo DiCaprio likes his girlfriends – young, thin and with Angel wings.
And no one asked about Katy Perry. She wanted to bring up Bad Blood. Demi came into this interview ready to play.
Still, nothing she says about Taylor is groundbreaking, and other parts of the interview, like circumstances that trigger her (like going to club and seeing coke remnants in a nightclub bathroom), are much more interesting but lost to the “Taylor Swift” headline.
Those headlines clearly affected her, because she hit Twitter hard. Demi has quit Twitter before (it never lasts long) but this time, she went through the celeb process (defense/denial/shaming/quitting) in 4 tweets.
First, she plays defense.
I get asked questions. I answer them. Sue me.
— Demi Lovato (@ddlovato) [October 4, 2016]
Yes, she was asked and her interview is candid. But she was also given an out. Right here.
GLAMOUR: Well, there are many kinds of “normal” bodies. I think what you’re getting at is there’s just one type of body in that squad.
That is the interviewer giving Demi a minute to backpedal, a chance to slide in with some body positivity. But she didn’t. She doubles down and calls them “not realistic.”
Then, it’s the old “taken out of context” play. It’s hard to see how this was taken out of context, it’s a Q&A.
Also don't forget that words can be taken out of context when doing interviews.. still not apologizing for saying what everyone want to say
— Demi Lovato (@ddlovato) [October 4, 2016]
From there, she launches into a celebrity favourite that has gotten even more popular lately: Don’t you have better things to worry about?
I don't understand why people care so much about what I say in interviews? Do y'all watch the news? Don't y'all got shit to worry about?
— Demi Lovato (@ddlovato) [October 4, 2016]
Demi loves the “you should be worrying about better sh-t” argument, she has used it before. But here’s the thing: she also says in the interview that she wants to use her platform to talk about important issues (which she does). So she doesn’t want anyone to care about what she says, but she wants to have her voice heard.
Right—when you’re an artist, you have a platform that can reach millions. I feel it’s selfish when you don’t use your voice, because then you’re just relishing the attention—you’re not using it for good. I have felt uncomfortable having people say, “You’re my idol,” because I want them to idolize God. I want them to idolize somebody that’s done a lot. So I think it’s important that artists use their voices for so much more than just their talent.
Sooooo should we care or not care? Selectively care? Cut and paste out parts of an interview that are considered important or not important based on what Demi decides after the fact? If you don’t want to talk about unimportant sh-t (which, to her, is Taylor Swift) then don’t. The interviewer didn’t push. The interviewer gave her an out. Demi is seasoned, she could see that. She went in.
The Squad comment is being framed as body shaming, but to me the shadiest comment is “I think it’s important that artists use their voices for so much more than just their talent.” That’s a knock. That’s implying that artists who don’t use their voice are selfish and vapid. I think many of Taylor’s fans would argue otherwise. She is known for being extremely charitable, she donated $250k to keep Kesha afloat, she called out Apple for free streaming, she’s taken her music off Spotify – there’s been a few things that Taylor would say she’s used her voice for. These things are important to Taylor, but they may not be that important to Demi. Does that make them any less valid?
As I said, most of the headlines about this interview center around Taylor, and maybe that’s what burns Demi. I get that. She was quite candid and open about her breakup with Wilmer, evolving as an artist, her struggles with mental health and addiction, and still it’s all Squad Squad Squad. It has to sting when you lay it all out and all people take away is “Demi Shades Taylor Swift!”
So Demi wants to take her toys and go home.
So excited for 2017. Taking a break from music and the spotlight.. I am not meant for this business and the media ðð¼
— Demi Lovato (@ddlovato) [October 4, 2016]
I like to call this the Bieber Tantrum. This is the millennial equivalent of storming out of a dinner party. I don’t like what is going on, so I’m going home. Justin (pretended) to leave because his fans weren’t being nice. Demi says she’s taking 2017 off because of the music business and the media. She also told a fan she would rather be doing charity work. Noble. Great. Bye.
How long do you think she’ll stay away? I say 3 days, tops. (Lainey: I’ll go with a month.)

[Jen & Coop]
[Jennifer Aniston in Emirates advert]
Jennifer Aniston’s deal with Emirates Airlines started [over a year ago]. A new commercial featuring Jen and a new friend called Coop has just been released. Coop is a kid who helps himself to Jen’s first class seat. They become friends and end up spending the entire flight together. First message: Jen and the children! Jen loves children! Jen might have children! Jennifer Aniston is pregnant!
Interestingly, Emirates and the major US airlines have reportedly [not been getting along]. Briefly, the American carriers believe that the “Gulf carriers” have unfair advantages and are adding new US routes at a pace that’s undercutting their business. For their part, the “Gulf carriers” insist that they’re operating fairly and that customers are just tired of the sh-tty service you get on their American counterparts. Keep that in mind then as you watch this ad. Because, well, do you notice anything about the passengers? Second message: don’t worry, white people fly Emirates too!
I’ve flown Emirates a few times. In economy. Even their economy class is amazing. So, their first class? Please. It’s better than my house. My point? I would NEVER EVER EVER give up my first class seat on Emirates to anyone, are you f-cking kidding me???

[Things I Wish I Didn't Know About Millie Bobby Brown]
[Millie Bobby Brown, Caleb McLaughlin, Gaten Matarazzo and Finn Wolfhard speak at the first South by South Lawn event, a festival of ideas, art, and action on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, DC on October 3, 2016]
Lainey winced when she sent me the article. Because she knew. She knew I couldn't not know what I know now.
Apparently, [Millie Bobby Brown], of Stranger Things, who's being inundated with film and TV offers, is about to sign with a new agent. Before she does, though, her father is reportedly [demanding a $100,000 signing bonus]. As in, up front before she actually makes any money.
It's allegedly a payment to her, but you know, she's 12, so...she's not the one asking here. This never happens, by the way. Some agents occasionally cut commissions from the standard 10%, or sometimes – and this is more Entourage-era lore than common occurrence, I guess new clients get a pretty nice welcome gift--but there's no set signing-bonus price. It's pretty horrifyingly bold to ask for.
The worst part about this news is that it's hard to pin down what the worst part actually is. Possibly, it's the fact that the people who worried that the Stranger Things kids were being worked pretty hard may not have been wrong. Or the knowledge that the future of Millie Bobby Brown's acting career is being determined not by who can do the most for her or really sees a future for her, but who can cough up the most money. Or maybe it's because, if you go even one step further down this path, and [follow the Daily Mail link], you realize how this is just the tip of the iceberg.
I didn't want to know that the family was out of money. That they all moved to the U.S. to make this happen, and there were "tears, tears, tears", and the older children didn't want to be there in pursuit of her dream, and most heartbreakingly, a quote from MBB saying, "I wasn't getting work..."
That's the phrase. Not "I didn't book that part" or "I really wanted to be (whatever character)." It's about work. Money. It's about supporting her family, at 12 years old, and a not un-present feeling that she now has to pay them back for everything they did to get her here.
Now add that to the pressure to top her performance in Stranger Things, the pressure to stay young and cute -- she better not go through puberty, and she better not have an awkward period if she does -- the pressure to choose the highest-profile, highest-stakes stuff to prove that all the desperate years were worth it...
I feel gross. What's fascinating about the concept of child actors is that I can always feel gross in new and different ways. Today, I’m feeling gross about all the other kids who maybe want to be pursuing acting, but whose parents can’t or don’t drop everything to fly across the country for a screen test, and they don’t become successful actors. As though how good you are at performing is the only thing that determines whether or not you “make it”. As though the people who put everything on the line so their twelve-year-olds can be “bombarded” by offers never see any ill effects as a result. I wish I didn’t have to be cynical this morning, as I watch another kid with too many people invested in her success walk down the only path possible.
Yes, as always with these conversations, there are exceptions. Maybe some of them are even starring on Stranger Things, I don’t know. But don’t blame me for telling the truth about the ones where the unfortunately ugly truth is pretty close to the surface.

[Ben Affleckâs schedule]
[Ben Affleck at 'The Accountant' Press Conference at the Four Seasons Hotel on October 1, 2016 in Beverly Hills, California]
It was confirmed today that [Ben Affleck]’s Live By Night will open in [limited release Christmas Day]. Which is [no surprise]. As soon as they announced that the film would premiere in January, there was always the assumption that this mean that the studio would drop it in theatres for an Oscar-qualifying run during holiday season. After all, Ben Affleck’s last film won Best Picture. And Warner Bros loves him. They’d never dump a film that he wrote and directed and stars in into the sh-t movie January period unless they had other intentions for it.
So, as noted earlier, Ben’s schedule the next few weeks is critical. If The Accountant does well for him first, next week, that’s solid momentum building to his next prestige piece, Live By Night. All less than 18 months after we met [Chrissy O] and the phoenix rising [tattoo on his back]. It’s the Ben Affleck self-destruction-resurrection cycle – and every time, it has to be more spectacular than the last. Which is why this time, it won’t be enough to just come back after writing and directing yet another critically acclaimed movie. This time he’s doing that AND he’s redefining one of the most iconic figures in pop culture, Batman. Or…The Batman.
Ben’s been talking about his Batman plans during interviews for The Accountant, revealing that the title he’s working with right now for his standalone Batman movie is The Batman. He also confirmed that the villain will be Deathstroke, played by [Joe Manganiello]. I know nothing about Deathstroke and nothing about the story and what Deathstroke means to Batman and whatever but this, this isn’t about the comics and the canon. This is about Ben Affleck. Because, well, while Joe Manganiello has a very nice body and, I’m sure, is a very nice person, Joe Manganiello is not… an impact. And, in my opinion, that’s deliberate.
An impact is a villain who steals the movie. We have become almost accustomed to seeing the villains steal the movie, to the point now where the casting of the villain is just as important as the casting of the hero, maybe more. Because the audience now goes into the movie hoping to fall in love with the villain. No one is going to come out of Ben Affleck’s The Batman falling in love with Joe Manganiello, sorry. Whatever he’s playing, Deathstroke or Deathtrap or Death By Chocolate, the character, the villain, in Joe Manganiello’s hands, is not going to become an icon and, therefore, not a threat to Ben Affleck. When Ben Affleck’s is Batman and Ben Affleck’s in charge of Batman, it’s all about Batman. Ben’s Batman will not be shown up.

[Jennifer Garnerâs Gossip Genie]
[Jennifer Garner out in LA after a workout with a friend, October 2, 2016]
[Jennifer Garner] was out the other day with a friend when the paps showed up. She was in a cheeky mood, because when they started pestering her about her love life, she joked that she’s with [Brad Pitt], now that he’s available (via [PopSugar]):
I mean, it’s a fun headline. And she obviously had a good time with it. And I’m having a good time with it, because these are the moments when she shows us her Amazing Amy. It doesn’t happen often but, as we all know, as we saw when she gave that [interview to Vanity Fair], Jennifer Garner has a lot of edges underneath those dimples. This is also what I meant recently when I said that celebrities are the biggest gossips among gossips. They probably convened a Special General Meeting when World War Brange happened just to get it all out.
Is it possible though? Jennifer Garner and Brad Pitt? The MiniVan Majority would lose its f-cking mind. And, strategically, on image and PR, that would be a great play. Hook up with America’s Favourite Mom after over a decade with the Woman American Moms Are Afraid Of. So, yeah, it would be great gossip. Probably impossible gossip, but definitely worth a rub on the Gossip Genie. And then, after, if you thought Ben Affleck had a hard time with the MiniVan life, how do you think Brad Pitt would handle moving into a Martha Stewart Living house?
For now, Jennifer Garner continues to be not-divorced from Ben Affleck. I doubt it will happen before the end of the year, especially since he’s currently promoting The Accountant, opening next weekend, and Live By Night a few weeks later. Now that all the gossip has been focused on Brange and Kanye West’s wife, nobody’s all that hungry to revisit Ben’s old scandals right now. His scandals seem dated and tired by comparison and he’s on the smooth part of his Ben Is Ben’s Biggest Problem drama cycle, coming out of the mess of last year, on yet another comeback. More on Ben in the next post.
