[LaineyGossip.com - Calling all smuthounds!] Monday, February 12, 2018 [Intro for February 12, 2017]( [Tom Cruise is a Tiger](Dear Gossips, A quick note before we get to the Tiger today. Some of you have been emailing to ask about how the years and the elements (Wood, Earth, Water, Fire, Metal) have been lining up to the signs of the Chinese Zodiac because you’ve seen it listed differently elsewhere. I asked my ma, the Chinese Squawking Chicken, about this. She has a response which Duana and I discuss on the new episode of Show Your Work that will be posted later today. The discussion happens at the beginning of the podcast and, somehow, Duana was able to relate ma’s work to Hermione Granger. My mother was born a Tiger. As mentioned when the [Dragon advisory]( was posted last week, Tigers and Dragons are similar in the volatility of their luck. When Tigers and Dragons are on a lucky streak, the results can be spectacular. Those highs, however, are often balanced by some equally spectacular lows. This is the destiny of Tigers and Dragons. In that sense, they are the divas of the Chinese zodiac. Tom Cruise is a Tiger. Think of his highs. There have been many and they have, indeed, been outrageously brilliant. Think also though of his lows. He’s been in some deep sh-t, and rather publicly too. Tigers often inspire jealousy. Consider its role in the animal kingdom. The Tiger is one of the most accomplished predators. The Tiger sits at the top of the food chain. Those attributes are reflected in its zodiac profile. The Tiger has major swagger. This can invite envy. During the Year of the Dog, the Tiger may serve as a luck transfer. It is the Tiger who could be bringing the luck to everyone else which might make the Tiger very popular. But even though the Tiger is the luck carrier, Tigers themselves may not keep much of it. This might be a break-even year. Which isn’t bad. If this is the case, you should not complain. Breaking even is better than losing. And if luck sees that you’re the kind who complains about staying steady (ie ungrateful), it might not be motivated to come around and reward you next time. Manage your expectations this year. There are 3 lucky stars helping the Tiger this year. But a Fire star is among them. Since the Fire is expected to be very strong during the Year of the Dog, summer Tigers in particular must be mindful of heart health and blood pressure and be careful driving. 1950 Wood Tigers – a lot of activity going on this year. Ma actually said that Tigers born this year will be “popular with fans”. She’s a 1950 Tiger. I think she was talking about herself but I’m not entirely sure who her fans are. Tigers of 1950 enjoy the best of finances of all Tigers during the Year of the Dog. 1962 Metal Tiger – be cautious, because you might experience quick gains that will disappear just as quickly if you don’t protect them. Your wins are precious. You must appreciate them. 1974 Water Tiger – there may be some side hustle opportunity for you during the Year of the Dog. Your luck runs along your nose during this period. If there is a bend in your nose, if your nose isn’t entirely straight, or if you have a narrow nose, celebrate a big birthday. (If you have no idea whether or not your nose is straight or bent or narrow or not, just celebrate a big birthday anyway. Chinese people have really weird ideas about what’s in a “good” nose. This is why I’ve had nose self-consciousness my whole life. My nose is considered “hooked”. Here’s a [side profile]( of my hawk nose).) 1986 Fire Tiger – follow the rules and avoid shortcuts. Everything on the up and up this year, do not mess around in the shade. Female Tigers born this year are advised to look after their physical and mental health. 1998 Earth Tiger – study hard, put time into your reading and learning. You will soon be able to take advantage of your preparations. Tigers and Dogs generally get along well. So relationships for Tigers should be stable this year. But Tigers can be moody and unpredictable. Consider your behaviour during arguments. Fire is the strongest element this year and minor disagreements can be easily fueled. Since Tigers already have fiery dispositions, this may be an especially explosive year for you. It is recommended that Tigers get a full checkup at the beginning of the year and hydrate well and eat sensibly. Stress reduction should be a priority. Reduce meat intake if possible. Swim. And no driving red cars if you can. In February and March, remember to see the doctor and get that physical. In May and June, stay guarded at work. If you are careless you may wear the blame and bring on legal problems. From May to August, be extra vigilant. Cannot stress enough that Tigers must really watch the Fire this year. Practise restraint during the Year of the Dog. Control your temper. Tigers, no matter their individual elements, can add to a Fire. And this is already a potentially unstable year. It’s not a bad idea for Tigers to be a part of festive, happy occasions this year. Go to parties, celebrate, especially in July and August. I can’t and I’m not mad at it. It’s a good song. Camila Cabello is a big deal with the youths. There’s still all kinds of lingering drama behind her departure from Fifth Harmony. And factions, of course. Fan factions fighting is fuel for social media. I just wanted to say that for the alliteration. Anyway, Camila was trending on social media this weekend for a new reason: she has a new boyfriend, his name is Matthew Hussey. She and Matthew were papped in Cabo, kissing and flirting and declaring that they’re doing it. Who is Matthew Hussey? He’s a …dating and relationship expert. I know this because he’s a regular guest on [The Marilyn Denis Show]( here in Canada and we’ve had him on a couple of times on The Social too. Matthew’s a reasonably attractive guy with a British accent. I’m sure you can imagine the audience reaction to him, especially when he’s telling (mostly) women how to “Get The Guy”, which is what his book is called and he has a column in Cosmo by the same name. Although some people think he’s too old for her (30 to 20) and others think it’s a publicity stunt. I’m always here for a good publicity stunt theory but… I just don’t know who benefits from the stunt. Matthew Hussey’s not a household name so, sure, he has something to gain but also, how the hell would he be able to manage setting up the stunt since he’s not a household name, you know? And why would her team approve of it? Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes? If that were happening, both sides would sign off on the stunt. I have a hard time believing that Matthew’s people sent a proposal over to Camila’s people and they were all like, “Yes, this English dating expert with a significantly smaller profile, who travels the country doing dating seminars is a good option for our talent who currently has a major hit song on the radio”. I mean, it’s so random that legit seems to be the only explanation for it? That said, I’m curious to see how it works for his brand. He’s all about any girl can get any guy. And he’s a goodlooking guy …who’s now with a gorgeous, young pop star. That’s all Duana. And she came up with it off the top of this week’s episode of Show Your Work, during a discussion about my Ma’s annual Chinese zodiac and feng shui forecasts. Many of you have written over the last couple of weeks about the signs of the zodiac and their corresponding elements and why the Squawking Chicken’s list doesn’t necessarily match up to what you may have seen elsewhere online. She has a response for you. And then I try to explain, as simply as possibly, her research process which includes old school texts. From there, it’s time to talk about Will Smith, who is so GREAT on Instagram. But when’s the last time you’ve had as much fun at a Will Smith movie as you’ve had enjoying his IG? His IG has become a Dad-gram. Is the dad thing behind his career moves too? Gina Rodriguez’s latest career move is “director”. She [talked to Variety]( about her directorial debut on Jane The Virgin. Because there was also a [conversation with Bernadette Peters]( which was totally different but also very much the same. This is a conversation about the work that goes into a great interview. I’ll add “relatable” to that description. Last week, I wrote about the hashtag [#WhatBlackPantherMeansToMe](. People are tweeting about the importance of Black Panther, not with abstract, hollow buzzwords but with personal, profound anecdotes about what seeing this film means to them. One of the many things about Black Panther that got me emotional was the hair. Natural black hair is on full display. Danai Gurira’s Okoye and the Dora Milaje all have shaved heads. Letitia Wright plays Shuri, a princess with braids and Lupita Nyong’o is the stunning warrior Nakia, who also happens to be T’Challa’s love interest, and her hair is gorgeously styled naturally, sometimes in “Wakanda knots.” You’ll know the Wakanda knots as soon as you see them. I’m hoping they become as iconic as the Princess Leia Buns and that little girls and grown ass women alike will be annoying our hair dressers with requests for this style for the rest of the year. “Wakanda knots” was coined by Camille Friend, the head of Black Panther’s hair department. In an article in The Cut by Ashley Weatherford called “[Black Panther Is a Beautiful Showcase for Natural Hair](”, Friend explains why it was so important to her that every single actor wore their natural hair in this film. Remember, Wakanda is an African nation that has never been colonized. In this fictional, wonderful world of Wakanda, there has been no white European influence. Whiteness is not the default or the standard. The long, straight hair that North American pop culture has prioritized and glamourized is not what is deemed beautiful in Wakanda. The queens, princesses and warriors in Wakanda do not rely on relaxers or hot combs or irons to achieve their beauty. “There’s no press and comb in this movie. No relaxers, no nothing! That was one of the things that I really was firm about. I requested that people come with their natural hair. People were like, “Are you sure?” and I was like, “Yes, I am sure!” When Friend says that actors asked her “are you sure?” about showing up with their natural hair it’s because in most cases, on most movie sets or auditions, black actors are told the opposite. What Lupita Nyong’o tells Allure about her relationship with her hair throughout her childhood is, sadly, too familiar for too many little black girls. “I didn’t love my hair when I was a child… I was really kind of envious of girls with thicker, longer, more lush hair. In my tween years, I started begging my mother to have my hair relaxed.” Lupita goes on to say that her mom finally let her relax her hair and after she did, Lupita says she, “felt a lot more acceptable.” Lupita Nyong’o grew up in Kenya. Even in an African country, there was shame attached to natural black hair. Still, natural black hair is deemed [unprofessional and inferior](. I haven’t worn my hair in a full natural style, without the aid of extensions or relaxers, in years. I had my hair in natural twists last year but I added some length. Listen, black women can do whatever the f-ck we want with our hair. If we’re wearing weaves or relaxing the sh-t out of our hair, it doesn’t mean we hate ourselves (find me a bottled blonde who hasn’t died her hair in years). But I know that some of my hesitance to rock my natural hair does link back to the shame I felt as a kid growing up in a predominately white space who looked up to Tyra Banks, Whitney Houston and Beyoncé, with their straight wigs and weaves. I go back to [this quote on black hair]( by Melissa Harris Parry often: “If we allow our hair to simply grow out of our heads in its natural state, most people will assume that we are making a social and political statement.” There are political statements in Black Panther that I’m sure I’ll be writing about a lot for years to come but its commitment to natural hair doesn’t have to be political. In Wakanda, natural black hair is normal and beautiful. To watch that play out on screen is radical now but hopefully, soon, it will just be ordinary. Lupita Nyong’o’s key personal hairstylist is Vernon Francois. He created all the looks in Lupita’s Allure cover and photo spread. This is what he said about the inspiration behind the cover: “Lupita and I wanted to show that coil-y or kinky hair has many strengths and can be worn in lots of different ways, celebrating its beauty and versatility.” There’s another key reason why Black Panther’s embrace of natural hair is important. Versatility is not a word you hear often when non-black fashion or beauty magazines talk about black hair. I used to make excuses about not wearing my hair naturally by saying things like, “I just don’t know how to style it!” or “I don’t know what to do with it!” There is not only one way to style natural black hair. Obviously. The natural black hair movement on YouTube has proven this but have magazines and pop culture followed its lead? Camille Friend came up with five different distinct looks for the five tribes of Wakanda. She styled everyone differently but similarly strikingly. There is so much style inspo in this movie that places blackness at its center. This shouldn’t be an anomaly. And after Black Panther, maybe it won’t be. God, this movie is already doing THE MOST. So a quick recap: [Kim Cattrall](’s brother passed away last week. It’s obviously a terrible time for her and her family. A few days ago she posted a message of appreciation to her Sex And The City colleagues for reaching out. In particular, she even wrote directly to Cynthia Nixon, thanking her for her concern. It’s suggested here that Cynthia called Kim because Kim mentions hearing her voice (click for full text). Supposedly [SJP]( Regina Georged Kim because Samantha Jones became such a popular character. And then, last year, all that sh-t came up again because SJP wanted to do a third SATC movie but the deal ended up falling through and, if you recall, Kim took the heat for it because it was leaked that she, allegedly, was asking for more money and a production deal [which I defended]( at the time because why shouldn’t a woman negotiate for work in her own best interest? Kim denied that she was the one who held up the situation and told Piers Morgan that she never wanted to do the movie (that no one is asking for because the movies suck!) in the first place. But SJP’s always had the bigger microphone. And she’s been out there promoting Divorce lately. And she was asked about the situation and offered her condolences to Kim and, well, now this. It’s ugly. It’s raw. Kim is in pain. Some call it lashing out. Lashing out, generally, is seen as unattractive. We’re supposed to endure our grief in silence. It’s classy. It’s elegant. It’s good manners. Sometimes, though, it’s unfair. To those who may be criticising Kim for taking this public, it was also made public a few months ago that she, allegedly, was the one who killed the reunion deal. Subtext: she’s difficult to work with. Where do you think that leak came from? The story travels far and wide. Everyone’s all, like, BLAME KIM! I don’t remember SJP stepping up and defending Kim. What do you think the ramifications are for a woman in the entertainment industry, f-ck any industry, who gets a reputation for being “difficult”, especially a woman who is now in her 60s, working in a business that’s unkind to aging women? That’s the kind of stink that stays with you, that can turn a potential meeting about an upcoming role into a cancellation and the next thing you know, your agent has to pass on the message that “they’ve decided to go in another direction”. So, even if it was true that Kim was negotiating for more and “demanding” what she believed she was worth, what does it say about the people who let her take sh-t for it, especially in the time of Time’s Up? And if that were you, and you were villainised for asking for what you deserve, and it jeopardised your career, and then those same people start trying to be kind to you in public when your family is going through a tragedy, would you be able to not lash out? It’s happening at 12 noon local time on May 19th. So if you’re in the Eastern time zone in America, that’s 7am. Very reasonable on a Saturday morning. Get up at 6am. Go poo if you’re lucky, make some breakfast, coffee if that’s your thing, or a mimosa, park yourself in front of the TV, get your royal wedding off for a couple of hours, and you still have the whole day ahead of you. If you’re are in the UK, apply the same, only you get it for lunch. And in Asia, this is a perfect night to stay in for dinner. Australia? This is happening at 11pm. Right before bedtime? The service will take an hour and then, at 1pm local: At 1pm the couple, now married, will undertake a Carriage Procession from St George's Chapel through Windsor Town returning to Windsor Castle along the Long Walk. I covered William and Kate’s wedding and my spot was at the Duke of York monument. They sent out a schedule to the media leading up to the event and I’m telling you, the carriage passed when they said it would pass, to the f-cking minute. So. The carriage ride. This is what people were wondering about when it was first announced that [Harry]( and [Meghan]( would marry in Windsor – whether or not there would be a procession so that the people could celebrate along with them. The people are getting their carriage ride. Meghan is getting her carriage ride. And it might even be a prettier carriage ride than Will and Kate’s. Because it’s the Long Walk. If you’ve been to Windsor, you know that’s a pretty spectacular view. If you’re planning a trip to Windsor for the wedding, make time for a walk in Windsor Great Park. You can see the Long Walk from Snow Hill and the statue of King George III. Here’s another reason why the carriage ride is important: if you’re riding in a carriage, this affects the dress choice. It’ll be a dress suited to a carriage in practicality, sure (a cathedral length veil might not work here), but also in drama. We’re not getting a slip dress is what I’m saying. Not that that was ever an actual possibility but now it’s even more remote. When you’re sitting in a carriage, it’s waist-up photographs. So, chances are, there’s going to be a party up top. And since those tight ass pearl-clutchers would probably bitch about strapless, they’ll have to make up for the party up top with either lace or beading. Seeing as Kate already went with lace… is Meghan going for some beading instead? Word is they’ve confirmed the dress. There were [rumours last week]( that it would Roland Mouret. Roland Mouret, though, is not usually known for a lot of intricate beading. Construction, yes. And shapes, yes. But beading…not really. Do you think it’s going to be Roland Mouret? The NFL is a [league in decline](. And Justin Timberlake is an artist in decline. It’s a Valentine’s match. Some people disputed my use of the word “decline”. JT’s Man Of The Woods is the worst reviewed album of his career. The first single off the album, Filthy, only [debuted at #9]( when it was released and then dropped rapidly. Supplies, the second single, didn’t do much better. And now the first week sales numbers are out. Justin has the #1 album of 2018 so far with 293,000 units sold. So…that sounds positive, right? Well. Kendrick Lamar’s first week sales for DAMN.: 603,000 units. This is easy math. [Justin Timberlakle]( sold LESS THAN HALF of what Kendrick did. Also released last year – Ed Sheeran’s album Divide. First week sales for Ed Sheeran’s Divide: 322,000 copies. And Drake’s More Life, which was released last year too, around this time, sold 505,000 units in its first week. Going back to 2016, The Weeknd’s album, Starboy, sold 348,000. So, Justin Timberlake, who’s supposed to be a big f-cking deal, sold less than Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Ed Sheeran, and The Weeknd in the first week. Are we still debating the definition of the word “decline”? Justin’s going to be OK though. Say Something, his single with Chris Stapleton, has some potential.
