Dear Gossips, If you haven?t already, listen to the Angelina Jolie interview on Scott Feinberg?s

[LaineyGossip.com - Calling all smuthounds!] Tuesday, December 05, 2017 [Intro for December 5, 2017]( [Angelina Jolie speaks onstage during 'On Collaborative Storytelling: Angelina Jolie And Loung Ung' at AFI FEST 2017 Presented By Audi at the Egyptian Theatre on November 13, 2017 in Hollywood, California](Dear Gossips, If you haven’t already, listen to the Angelina Jolie interview on Scott Feinberg’s Awards Chatter podcast that was just posted yesterday. It’s almost an hour of her talking through her career, sounding more relaxed and casual than she does when we see her on panels and on stage. There is something about a podcast setting that lends itself to intimacy. And, of course, in general with podcasts, there’s a built-in expectation about the length. Or, rather, no expectation. You’re not bumping up against a commercial break. You can, if you want to, make it as long as you want. So here we have Angelina Jolie, for an extended period of time, answering questions about her youth, her memories of her mother, her complicated relationship with her father, and touching on all her romances – with Jonny Lee Miller, Billy Bob Thornton, and of course Brad Pitt. Angelina is warm but not obsequious, articulate and informed, but not pedantic, and yes, she’s about as candid as she can be, giving up juuuuuust enough of the gossip that we’re looking for, but not so much that they can turn it into a blaring headline like, ANGELINA RECALLS WILD SEX WITH BILLY BOB! When Brad Pitt comes up in conversation, and he does several times, in relation to her work, there’s no awkwardness, no bitterness, no reluctance. Not even when they’re talking about By The Sea and what that film means now that they’re no longer together. She acknowledges that, now especially, it may not have been a good idea but also explains what the motivation was at the time, and the takeaway she can still find in the effort: “A piece of art can be something that's healing or something that's difficult. I don't know. I'm glad we did that film because we did explore something together. Whatever it was maybe it didn't solve certain things, but we did communicate something that needed to be communicated to each other." There’s nothing new that’s revealed there, she’s too smart for that. But it’s not a total non-answer either, not when you can hear her say the words “maybe it didn’t solve certain things” with what I heard to be a sense of closure to her voice. Of course Angelina is an actor, she knows better than most how to convince you with her tone and her delivery. But on my listen, to me it sounded like she’d moved past the hurt and she’s at the point of reflection now. Which is probably not good news for anyone hoping there might be a reconciliation. She seems, in this interview, convincingly at peace with what’s happened. Beyond the romantic gossip though, what hooked me about this interview was the work gossip. It was straight up porn when she was talking about directing In The Land Of Blood And Honey and the decision to shoot it in two languages after being challenged by producers that she could do whatever she wanted, they didn’t care, as long as she came in budget every single day. She also reveals her directing “tell” – the signature move that all directors have that’s specific to them and that shows up in all their work. And, where acting is concerned, she reveals how she chooses her roles and when. For example, when she needs to feel strong, when she’s been down, when she’s coming out of a low, she goes for the action. Lara Croft, Wanted, and Salt all came at times when she, as Scott Feinberg put it, had to “kick some ass”. And, interestingly enough, she’s looking for exactly that kind of kick ass project right now. I’m sure the timing of that isn’t lost on you. As you know, as we’ve seen over the last couple of months, Angelina is campaigning. The goal here is an Oscar nomination for First They Killed My Father in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The Hollywood Reporter is a trade. It’s become required reading for the current generation of online gossips, for sure, but the publication also directly targets Hollywood itself. Studio power players, industry insiders, big agents, retired strategists, actors and directors, people at all levels of production are consuming THR. At least some of them will be listening to this interview. It’s probably the strongest interview she’s done this year. [Click here]( to listen. Yours in gossip, Lainey [Click here for the rest of the photos.]( Posted at 1:39 PM [Selena’s Instagram privatisation]( [Selena Gomez attending the Fashion Awards 2017, in partnership with Swarovski, held at the Royal Albert Hall, London, December 4, 2017](That sounds like a business deal. It’s not a business deal. I wish it was a business deal. But it’s just old fashioned petty celebrity drama. [Selena Gomez]( has made her Instagram private. And most people think it has something to do with this: 📷 [@selenagomez]( via Instagram Stories [pic.twitter.com/y2rctrh0QT]( — Selena Gomez News (@_selenagomezecu) [December 5, 2017]( "Never will I let another human guess my words ever again. Or invite them in my home. That is so hurtful. The most 'ridiculous' part of that is no one knowing my heart when I say things." That quote is related to her [Billboard Woman of the Year interview](. And this paragraph in particular: "There's a five-foot teddy bear sprawled across the kitchen floor in Selena Gomez's North Hollywood home. 'I know, I know,' says Gomez, rolling her eyes, acknowledging that the stuffed animal doesn't quite blend with the trio of armchairs nestled in the inviting, marble-accented nook. 'It was a gift, and at first I thought, This is so ridiculous, I can't wait until I give it away to another person.' But Gomez, 25, hasn't let go of it — yet." I’m guessing that whoever gave her the teddy bear was hurt when they read that she called it “ridiculous” and wanted to give it away? And now she’s pissed at Billboard for including it in the article, for actually kicking off the article with the story? And also pissed off at whoever else dragged her for wanting to get rid of the teddy bear? So she switched her Instagram to private to … make a point? But. I don’t know what the point is. She’s the most followed person on Instagram. Millions and millions of people. Like 130 MILLION. How private is it when you have 130 million followers? Selena was the lead story on this week’s episode of [Show Your Work](. Duana and I talked about this current cohort from the Disney school of child stardom. What’s different about this cohort in comparison to the previous one (Britney, Christina, Ryan, Justin) is the vulnerability. This is a generation that has shown us so much of its vulnerability – and this is how they’ve been able to relate to their fans. Where the previous cohort was criticised for its machinery, Selena’s cohort is all about revealing the breakdown of that machinery, and their ultimate rejection of it. So, yes, this is consistent, consistent with what she’s shown us. Feeling hurt and making some sort of statement, even if that statement is still a mystery, by privatising her Instagram account is consistent Selena Gomez behaviour. It’s just… She’s a proper business force now. She’s producing hit series. She’s handling her endorsements, she’s the Woman of the Year. Maybe I’m old school. Maybe I’m just a different generation. I understand that emotion is essential. That we no longer connect and relate to robotic celebrities. But it’s also about managing that authenticity of emotion with growth. Like I’m not sure it’s a good move for a CEO – and she is the CEO of Selena Gomez, the brand – to get into her feelings about a part of an article in Billboard and stomp off in a cloud of pout. It adds to the drama. And if the goal is to avoid the drama, this isn’t the move. But there’s always something a little special about seeing Brad Pitt. It’s that movie star aura around him. [A post shared by Chris Rock (@chrisrock)]( on Dec 5, 2017 at 7:39am PST Stella McCartney received a Special Recognition for Innovation Award from the London Fashion Awards this week. Pink and Annabelle Wallis were her guests, both wearing her designs. Gwyneth Paltrow commented on this particular photo, “Go Stelly” (with several exclamation points). Obviously G and Stella go way back. And Annabelle dated Chris Martin after G. So is there friendliness all around? Because Stella posted a few photos from the event, and this is the one G chose to comment on. She could have easily posted it on a photo of Stella standing alone with her award. So now I’m wondering if this is genuine affection or magnanimous posturing. Or maybe she now shares a special kind of understanding with Annabelle. Because if anyone knows about Chris Martin relationship f-ckery, it’s G. Now that she’s happily engaged, she can probably sympathize with the ones who come after her. I watched the trailer for [Good Girls](, which premieres on NBC next February, and liked it almost instantly – but I only lasted 18 seconds before I punched the space bar to pause in some kind of rage-endorsement, and wrote the following in an email to Lainey and our site manager Emily: “I’m writing this, right? Getting into a full feminist fever pitch about what idiot didn’t THROW this on TV as soon as the predators started falling? Upon reflection, that may seem like a strange reaction to the trailer for a show I’m pretty sure I’m going to like a whole lot. It’s exciting to watch these three get in over their heads in a drama, for [Retta]( to get more to do than snarky one-liners – hell, for these three women to topline a show on their own, with nary an ‘anchor’ male star in sight (but we see you, Matthew Lillard AND Zach Gilford! Hiiii!). It looks funny! It looks new and different and there’s lots of places to go, and I don’t really have a network hour right now! I love women and crime! There are lots of reasons to like the show… But the reason I didn’t last longer than 18 seconds is because that’s when the ‘nice guy’ tells [Mae Whitman](, “You’re definitely a stuck-up bitch.” Because she turns down his invitation to church. That’s when I got excited. Because this show is about women who are angry with men. Who could have known how much we would need this right now? I mean, other than all of us, that is. But seriously, Good Girls was written by Grey’s Anatomy alumni Jenna Bans, and was purchased as a pilot in late 2016. They shot the pilot in early 2017, and the lead role was recast (as discussed on [Show Your Work]( mid-year. Which is to say, there’s been more than enough garbage thrown at women in the past year, and the years before that, and our entire lives, to believably make these women ready to stop being ‘good’. But of course, it seems like a whole different lifetime has begun since the Harvey Weinstein allegations revealed the unending waterfall of horrific men masquerading as ‘good guys’ to the world. It’s a different reality, almost – we’re finally talking about all the horrific things that have been happening all along (or as the women of SNL perkily put it, [Welcome To Hell]( )). Now this show feels more important. More necessary. More timely than anyone could have predicted. Especially since [Christina Hendricks]( and Retta and Mae Whitman have each, at various times, been maligned (or worse, faintly praised) for being ‘untraditional’ stars, which is a euphemism I know you don’t need me to unpack for you. No pressure everyone, but now it seems like this is the show we need and want. It’s kind of like if Bad Moms was a show, but actually real and/or good and/or written by a woman. I don’t want to get my hopes up too high. But I feel like I might have been waiting for a show like this for most of my adult life. Which means I was being tongue-in-cheek about why the show isn’t on-air already, obviously. In truth, the person who greenlit it is probably about to get a raise, and the one who decided to premiere it at mid-season is a certified genius. Right? [Click here for the rest of the photos.]( Posted at 6:43 PM [Bryan Singer got fired]( [Bryan Singer ](Following his [vanishing act]( from the set of Bohemian Rhapsody, and to the surprise of no one, Fox has fired Bryan Singer as director of the film. A replacement is expected to be named within days, and that person will then finish the film—with about two weeks left on the shooting schedule—and see it through post-production. Maybe they can [replace him with Christopher Plummer](? Every movie should replace one person with Christopher Plummer. There’s still no word if there is an exposé in the offing—though journalists MUST be looking into Singer, given his history with allegations—and the way the report reads, it sounds like a studio just got fed up with a flaky director. Singer was already operating on thin ice, warned by the Fox brass that they “wouldn’t tolerate any unprofessional behavior on his part”. With star Rami Malek complaining to the studio, and apparently getting into heated arguments with Singer on set, and fellow actor Tom Hollander reportedly quitting and having to be lured back, it sounds like production on Bohemian Rhapsody has been a nightmare. Singer has [released a statement](, saying, “Bohemian Rhapsody is a passion project of mine. With fewer than three weeks to shoot remaining, I asked Fox for some time off so I could return to the U.S. to deal with pressing health matters concerning one of my parents. This was a very taxing experience, which ultimately took a serious toll on my own health. Unfortunately, the studio was unwilling to accommodate me and terminated my services. This was not my decision and it was beyond my control.” He also acknowledges the reported clashes with Rami Malek, but says they worked everything out: “While, at times, we did have creative differences on set, Rami and I successfully put those differences behind us and continued to work on the film together until just prior to Thanksgiving.” Singer’s statement is designed to garner sympathy and paint himself as the poor artist trampled on by the big bad studio. Usually, fans do side with the creatives in moments like these, but I think Singer is going to find sympathy tough to come by. Also, there is always the lingering specter of a potential exposé. The Playlist [notes]( that Singer’s production company is moving off the Fox lot, post haste. Their production deal had ended, but just like Warner Brothers and Brett Ratner, the studio cut short the grace period to get Singer off the lot. That kind of smells like they know something is coming and want to be able to say they acted preemptively. Yesterday I asked why someone as unreliable as Singer, who has previously disappeared from Superman Returns and X-Men: Apocalypse, would keep getting chances, but really, we know why. It is interesting, though, that the Fox executives who booted him off Rhapsody are women. Stacey Snider took over earlier this year as Chair and CEO of 20th Century Fox, and her Vice-Chair and President of Production is Emma Watts. Both were already at Fox; Snider was co-chair from 2014, and Watts is a twenty-year veteran of the company who worked all over the production chain before taking over as president. They both had to know about Singer’s magic act going into Bohemian Rhapsody—thus the warning. The question now is who replaces Singer—Bill Condon was at one point attached to the project—and what happens if a story on Singer breaks. Due to Directors’ Guild rules, Singer is going to get that director’s credit. Whoever comes in after him will likely get a writer or producer credit, not unlike Joss Whedon getting a writer’s credit on Justice League. (Ron Howard is getting credited with directing Solo because they scrapped enough of the Lord & Miller material that they no longer qualify as directors “of record”. It basically comes down to who directed the most of the used footage.) So they bring in Director X to finish the film, and Bohemian Rhapsody makes its December 2018 release date. That’s prime award season. Rami Malek could be a factor in the Best Actor race. Maybe there has been a high profile trip to one or more fall festivals. Director X is there with Malek, smiling in all the photos. They’ve had plenty of time to craft a positive, sound-bite-ready narrative. But through it all is the tag, A Film by Bryan Singer. And who knows what that will mean by this time next year. Maybe nothing. I remain cynical about the odds of Singer getting an official exposé. But maybe a story does break, and then Bohemian Rhapsody is f*cked, no matter who takes over. For Edward, then, this is quite a coup, having [Taylor Swift]( cover the first issue of 2018. He styled her himself and she was photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott who also shot her for reputation. Here’s what Edward wrote to accompany the photos: “For me, the chance to help transform America’s most fascinating sweetheart was a joy. As we took the pop icon on an epic fashion journey with photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, what struck me most about Taylor was her brilliant sense of humour, but also how, for a woman in her twenties, she has an incredible sense of who she is," Enninful said of the shoot. Obviously she is a world-class lyricist – and has written a stunning poem just for Vogue on the timely subject of reinvention and moving on – but she also takes her duties as a role model very seriously. Taylor is acutely aware of her following and how she communicates with young women, and will never portray a character that would send the wrong message. That said, even superstars aren’t immune to the power of a great dress. Taylor says she has never seen herself transformed like this before, and I was very touched to see how emotional she was at the end of our shoot day in London.” So there will not be accompanying interview. Instead, Taylor has contributed a poem. She’s been writing a lot of poems lately. There were a few poems included in the reputation marketing materials. Or does a poem resonate with you? Whatever. Maybe it’s because poetry is such a tricky artform with the finest line between high level creative expression and pure embarrassment. When poetry is bad, it can be even more cringeworthy than the worst book ever written. I mean I didn’t cringe when I read Taylor’s poems but there are certain lines that brought on the fontrum. A couple of weeks ago, Cosmopolitan asked Stephanie Burt, Harvard English professor, to assess the poetry of Taylor Swift. Did you [read the article](? It made me laugh. This line in particular. “Why do the pennies have to be shiny?” If you haven’t already, follow that link and have a look when you can. I wonder if the professor just got added to Taylor’s burn book. As for the photos, I love them. Edward Enninful has finally figured out what to do with her hair. No, she can’t style it like this every day but for this editorial, it looks amazing. And she looks amazing in this shot: Interesting though, non? British Vogue? In particular BRITISH Vogue? Working with Edward, of course, was the primary draw. But someone’s also been spending a lot of time in England. [Click here for the rest of the photos.]( Posted at 4:09 PM [Kaia’s style]( [Kaia Gerber attends The Fashion Awards 2017 in partnership with Swarovski at Royal Albert Hall on December 4, 2017 in London, England]([Kaia Gerber]( is still happening. She was the breakout star of last season’s fashion weeks. I wrote about her [surprisingly stellar runway walk](. Lainey wrote about Kaia opening the [Chanel show in Paris in October](, an honour Karl Lagerfeld only gives to the Model of the Moment. She’s arrived – definitively. Now what? Those were the two words that I thought when I saw photos of Kaia at the British Fashion Awards last night. Kaia was up for Model of The Year but lost to Adwoa Aboah, obviously. The fact that Kaia was nominated at all (alongside Aboah, Gigi and Bella Hadid and Winnie Harlow) is a big deal. I can’t think of another red carpet appearance Kaia has done since her fashion week debut. Since then, as someone who doesn’t follow the inner workings of the fashion world that closely, I haven’t seen or heard much from Kaia Gerber. We haven’t really heard anything from Kaia Gerber at all. What does she sound like? What is her personality? In the age of the Instagram Supermodel, is it still enough to just have an excellent walk and a perfect face? Fans of Gigi and Kendall feel like they KNOW them. F-ck, I feel like I know them and I’m not even trying to. In the Now What? phase of Kaia’s career, does she need to step up her social media game a la Chrissy Teigen or get a reality show? I just creeped Kaia’s Instagram and while it’s very pretty, it’s also pretty boring. Kaia is, of course, Cindy Crawford’s daughter. Cindy Crawford travelled with her throughout fashion week season. Cindy Crawford seems to be very hands-on with her daughter’s career. In Cindy’s day, you didn’t need a reality show. There was no Instagram. Your walk, your face and your style made you a star. Period. I am SO young so I don’t remember what the tabloid conversations were during the OG supermodel period but my guess is that it was a lot easier to remain mysterious and let the clothes do most of the talking. Here, Kaia is rocking the sh-t out of a two-piece Ralph & Russo co-ord set. This outfit is doing a lot of talking. It says, “I am coming for those Best Dressed lists, Gigi and Kendall.” It says that she is willing to take risks while also playing it safe. She is nailing every pose in every picture. I’m obsessed with her earcuff. This is a strong showing at her first major red carpet event. Now what? [Click here for the rest of the photos.]( Posted at 3:39 PM [John Oliver vs Dustin Hoffman]( [Dustin Hoffman attends the 20th Anniversary Screening Of 'Wag The Dog' at 92nd Street Y on December 4, 2017 in New York City](Have you seen Wag The Dog? It’s a satirical film about politics and elections and, if I remember correctly, it was released around the time of the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky scandal, about the president running for re-election who creeped on a young girl and hires a Hollywood publicist to create a diversion – which ends up being a war. Timely, non? To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the film, John Oliver moderated a panel discussion with the cast last night in New York. Dustin Hoffman was there. And, given that Dustin has made [his own sexual harassment headlines]( recently, John went there. If you’re a fan of John on Last Week Tonight, you know that going there is true to his brand. If he didn’t go there it would be a betrayal of that show’s purpose. And, besides, when a sex scandal is an essential plot point of the film – WHY WOULDN’T HE GO THERE? Dustin Hoffman took exception. [Click here]( for the Washington Post’s summary of how it all went down and [click here]( to read Deadline’s take. I highly recommend you read both. Because it’s a difference in tone. Look at Deadline’s description of what happened, using the word “derail” to describe it: They continue that kind of characterisation of the conversation through the article, with words likes “agonising” and “anguished”. They’re trying to convey to you how uncomfortable it was. Perhaps unfairly uncomfortable. But you know what? If comfortable has been what predators have been feeling for far too long, comfortably protected that is, isn’t it time for a little discomfort? Well, not for certain members of the audience. They paid to hear about the film. And some of them felt that this was offside, that where the discussion went was not what they came for. A few weeks ago, when I wrote about Ben Affleck’s appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert [to promote Justice League]( and Colbert asked Ben about his association with Harvey Weinstein, you could hear some audience members groan. It bothered me then and it bothers me now. The avoidance of discomfort is one of the founding pillars of polite society. It’s the dinner party tip, right? Don’t talk politics or religion. I’m beginning to feel like, more and more, prioritising politeness is one way to keep people silenced, why issues aren’t confronted, why so much bullsh-t isn’t interrogated. Because we all want to maintain a nicey-niceness while ignoring the rot that continues to pop up through the floorboards. And you know what? It’s not like Dustin Hoffman wasn’t part of why the conversation got “derailed”, if that’s what you want to call it. Apparently he kept coming back to the issue in order to defend himself, feeling injured by what he interpreted to be a personal attack. By blaming the internet and social media, outrage culture, and later by talking about what an ally he is to women, especially after he made Tootsie. THAT, right there, is entitlement. And entitlement is very much the problem. Dustin Hoffman showed us that he believes that he was entitled to some f-cking respect and that it was an insult to him that John would question his feminism. Well isn’t that what we’ve all been examining over the last two months since Harvey Weinstein got exposed? Because you know what would have diffused the situation? What would have diffused it would have been to just keep saying something along the lines of, “I understand that some people have heard some stories about me and were disappointed. Right now is not the time for me to have my say. Right now, it’s time to hear more stories from women. We need to provide more opportunities for women to come forward. I’m here to listen”. The end. It’s not an admission of guilt. It wouldn’t cost him anything. And it would put the focus on what needs to change. Is it a perfect response? No. I’m not sure there is a perfect response. But it’s a BETTER response than what we got. It’s not sanctimonious and it’s not self-serving. Even Ben Affleck got that marginally more right than Dustin Hoffman did. And when Ben f-cking Affleck is doing better than you, you really need to get your life. [Click here for the rest of the photos.]( Posted at 3:03 PM [The Quentin Tarantino Star Trek movie]( [Quentin Tarantino]([Quentin Tarantino]( has been talking retirement recently, [stating]( his intention to retire (from directing) at ten feature films. He has a project—relocated at Sony after splitting from his long-time producer, Harvey Weinstein, for obvious reasons—currently slated for 2019 that may or may not be about Charles Manson. That would be his ninth feature film, which leaves just one more movie before his supposed retirement. Which could be a Star Trek movie? According to Deadline, QT pitched an idea to [JJ Abrams](, who has passed on instructions to set up a writer’s room to work out Tarantino’s pitch. Ideally, there is a viable project and Tarantino would direct with Abrams producing for Paramount, current managers of the Trek IP. This sounds nuts, but Tarantino has talked franchises before, and [especially Star Trek](, and he loves genre, so it’s not like he’s above directing sci-fi. I can totally see Quentin Tarantino directing a Star Trek movie, it’s exactly the kind of weird left-field thing he’d do. Especially after he “retires” from making his own movies. Because here’s the thing—I don’t think Tarantino will ever stop making stuff, and I don’t think he’ll stop directing, but I do think he’ll divide his career into “his” stuff” and “everyone else’s” stuff. I can see him “quitting” after his tenth feature, and then coming back to make things in a more collaborative spirit than his Ten Features, the movies he wrote and directed himself. He may one day be done making “his” movies, but he can still make a movie for someone else, like a Star Trek movie, developed with JJ Abrams. Not an exclusive Tarantino movie, not special like his Ten Features, but something with his thumbprint. And why not Star Trek? QT is a huge nerd. Last year Paramount [announced]( an intention to make a fourth Trek with Chris Pine, one that would reunite him with Chris Hemsworth, who had a pre-Thor cameo in the 2009 reboot as Captain Kirk’s dad. But then Star Trek Beyond came out and underwhelmed, and that fourth installment seemed dead in the water. Exploring the possibilities of a Tarantino-led Trek project seems to drive another nail in the Pine/Hemsworth Trek project’s coffin. I highly doubt Tarantino’s idea has anything to do with the Abrams reboot, as Tarantino has always talked about Original Trek and the possibilities contained within Gene Roddenberry’s 1960’s television show. And since Beyond essentially failed, Paramount is probably fine with moving on to a fresh take, especially one from a singular artist like Tarantino. It’s just unfortunate that Star Trek is up for an overhaul just as Pine and Hemsworth emerge as the Top Chrises.
