Dear Gossips,
What I missed the other day is that Sylvester Stallone announced on Instagram that he’ll be directing and producing Creed 2.

Creed was co-written and directed by Ryan Coogler. Ryan’s schedule, as you can imagine, being that he’s a few months out from the release of only the most anticipated movie of 2018, Black Panther, obviously can’t accommodate the Creed sequel in time for when they want to begin production. His next project is once again a collaboration with Michael B Jordan on a film called Wrong Answer from a script written by Ta-Nehisi Coates.
Sly is not an inexperienced director. And he’s certainly not inexperienced where the Rocky franchise is concerned. In a way, then, it makes sense to have him in the role. That said, the reason Creed worked is because it was made with a specific vision, with a specific voice, giving us a new boxer, from another world, to care about. Ryan Coogler understood the impact that his story would have – not only by casting a black man in an updated version of an American hero but also giving us a portrait of black love. This is the work that Sly Stallone will be expected to continue. And already there’s been speculation that he plans to bring back Dolph Lundgren’s Ivan Drago. Rocky is Adonis’s coach. Is Ivan Drago going to coach Adonis’s next opponent? Is that really the answer?
I want to be optimistic. So, optimistically, I am hoping that Sly will build a team around him that understands what made Creed a success, why it was able to reach its previous audience and its new audience the way it did, to help him take the narrative forward.

Yours in gossip,
Lainey

[Conscious Uncoupling: Brangeâs Shadow Edition](
[Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber at the Take Home a Nude Art Party and Auction in New York, October 11, 2017](
I was trying to remember why I didn’t remember the [Naomi Watts]( and [Liev Schreiber]( breakup. Neither of them have ever been scandalous, so I thought that was it. Then I looked at the date: they separated September 26, 2016. That same week – September 20, 2016 – the biggest celebrity breakup of the decade hit: [Brad and Angelina](. For Naomi and Liev, it was purposefully quiet separation.
And it’s remained quiet. This is why when I see them together, I don’t think about reconciliation. I don’t think about their personal lives at all, which is exactly what they are hoping for. They might not be Brange-level on the celebrity scale, but they are too very well-regarded working movie actors who do not show up at the [Mr. Bones Pumpkin Patch every year](. I have no idea what their children are called. Their disinterest in being discussed has made me genuinely not want to discuss them.
But I do want to talk about her dress. Dior. I love it. Before we break down her style, [here is the runway]( look for reference. It’s better on Naomi, because of the styling choices. She lightened it up with a keyhole cuff (is that the right term for her jewelry? I’m going with it). It’s difficult to make a black dress feel light but this feels so light, perfect for early fall. The billowy sleeves cuff right at the perfect spot (3/4 sleeves are so underrated) and the striped piping gives it some interesting texture and detail. Also, judging by the runway shot, it looks like she might have gone up a size – it’s a little looser on Naomi than it is on the model. Great choice. No one ever wants to go a size up and I say why not? Sometimes it relieves stiffness around the shoulders.
And usually I would say no to a belt because “accentuating the waist” feels old-fashioned, but I love what she did with the belt here. It’s thick (and maybe velvet?), so it doesn’t feel dainty.
She finished it with leather and velvet platform sandals. I want these very, very much. Prada. [Sold out](, of course.
Her beauty choices are on point too, with a red lip and undone hair. It’s really the perfect look for a weekday gala event to benefit an art museum, right? She could have shown up in a ho-hum nude sequins dress but chose this. Major style points to Naomi.
And I wonder if this will be a new area of focus for her? She was at New York Fashion Week with Nicole Kidman – they attended the Michael Kors show [in complementary looks](. She also attended the Dior show in Paris and for The Glass Castle press events, chose Fendi, Zac Posen and Rochas.
For a very long time Naomi has had top-tier access – she is getting dressed by the big names on a consistent basis. But her style hasn’t been consistent – oftentimes, she can blend into the background (and perhaps that is by choice). If she is making moves to be seen as more of a risk-taker and major fashion player, I would be so into that. If we look at the crop of current movie stars – Jennifer Lawrence, Alicia Vikander, Brie Larson – there are a lot of safe choices. There is room for more curious, inventive red carpet looks, but Emma Stone and Ruth Negga can’t do it all. I would love to see Naomi follow in Nicole’s footsteps and show up with toucans on her shoulders. This is a case where fashion could certainly be used to boost a successful career and give us a sense of who Naomi is, without sacrificing privacy.
Has Naomi ever covered American Vogue? That might be a stretch this year, but if I’m her publicists, I’m booking 73 Questions.

[AJ & JL](
[Angelina Jolie attends the premiere of 'Faces Places' at the Pacific Design Center, on October 11, 2017, in West Hollywood, California](
Both [Angelina Jolie]( and [Jennifer Lawrence]( were at the premiere of Faces Places last night in LA. Faces Places is an award-winning documentary directed by the acclaimed Agnes Varda and also JR. Angelina Jolie is very selective about the events she attends in Hollywood. Anytime she shows up anywhere it’s a story, the pictures get out there. The event gets a boost. I’m guessing here that’s she’s there out of respect for Agnes Varda, as you can see from the deference she’s showing in these photos.
There are, however, as far as I can see, no photos of Angelina and Jennifer together. A logical explanation for this might be that they came at different times. Another explanation is that this is often how Hollywood works. They know their currency. They know the value of what a photo of like that would be. And how it would be talked about, how I (with emphasis) would talk about it, how we would talk about it.
OMMGGGGGG Angelina & Jennifer! What did they talk about? Are they best friends? And this, obviously, wasn’t the point of them showing up.
Still. We Gossip Genie romances a lot. We don’t often Gossip Genie friendships. Would you like to Gossip Genie this friendship with me, please? Oh wait. Would Angelina encourage or discourage Jen’s relationship with Darren Aronofsky?
PS. Faces Places is currently in select theatres in select cities. It has a good score on Rotten Tomatoes. As in a 100% fresh rating. But, [to Sarah’s point](, people can’t find it. She wrote about this a couple of weeks ago, about the [availability and accessibility]( of films and how blaming Rotten Tomatoes is, once again, totally simplifying the dilemma.

[Dakota Johnson & Jon Hamm?](
[Jon Hamm speaks onstage during the 2017 New Yorker Festival at SIR Stage37 on October 7, 2017 in New York City](
Kathleen just mentioned in her post previous to this the great Twilight truther conspiracy theory – that Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are together IRL with babies. Fifty Shades Of Grey was based on Twilight. And did you know that there are also Fifty Shades truthers? It’s a smaller army but their passion is the same: they believe that Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan too are together IRL. I don’t think they have babies though. Do they?
For the rest of us, however, Jamie Dornan is married to Amelia Warner and they have two actual children and [Dakota Johnson](…well… Dakota Johnson might be dating [Jon Hamm](?
According to [Page Six]( Dakota and Jon were seen together last Thursday together in New York:
We’re told the genetically blessed actors were spotted drinking wine at Kingside in the Viceroy Central Park hotel on Thursday night after Hamm, 46, hosted the Brooklyn Black Tie Ball.
“They seemed to really be enjoying each other’s company,” a spy told us of their “low-key” night, adding that they were hanging out for about two hours.
It’s not the first time Hamm, 46, and Johnson, 28, have been spotted together. In April the pair were photographed together at Elton John’s 70th birthday party.
I don’t know that there’s anything here to slamdunks the fact that they’re dating. Right now all we have is a sighting of them for two hours somewhere. And smiling and maybe laughing. If there had been any more than that, we for sure would have gotten a “canoodling” detail in report. Given that there is no mention of “canoodling” (in parentheses because I hate that word), I’m assuming that the source did not see any of it.
Still.
It’s an intriguing possibility. It’s been a while since we’ve had a new intriguing celebrity match. Are they though? A good match? Some of Dakota Johnson’s friends include Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, and Cara Delevingne. Can you imagine seeing Jon Hamm at #Taymerica? Is #Taymerica even a thing anymore? As for Jon Hamm’s friends, well he’s an SNL-almost regular. And I’m wondering if their connection isn’t actually SNL. Dakota’s hosted before. I feel like she’s in the SNL orbit too. That crept up on us, didn’t it? SNL as a Hollywood romantic breeding ground – ScarJost, Ben Affleck and Lindsay Shookus, possibly-maybe-perhaps [Emma Stone and Dave McCary]( and possibly-maybe-perhaps Dakota Johnson and Jon Hamm…
Now I have a very, very long list of people I want to host Saturday Night Live. Angelina Jolie has never hosted SNL. She probably never will. Probably. It’s not impossible though, is it?

[Robert Pattinson and FKA twigs call off engagement](
[FKA twigs and Robert Pattinson ](
Jenna Wortham, a culture writer for The New York Times and host of the podcast Still Processing, recently tweeted asking her followers for their favourite conspiracy theory. She got responses ranging from Katy Perry is actually JonBenet Ramsey to Stevie Wonder is not actually blind. Those are both hilarious but the conspiracy theory that makes me laugh the most because it is absolutely batsh-t is the one about [Robert Pattinson]( and Kristen Stewart secretly being married with children. Lainey has been writing about it for years. Maria expertly dragged the theory and its delusional perpetuators [here](. The TwiHards who are still holding on to this ridiculous theory now have more ammunition for their fan fiction because RPattz (are we still calling him this?) and his fiancée [FKA twigs]( are officially over, according to [The Sun](.
In July, Lainey wrote about Robert Pattinson's interview with Howard Stern in which he said he was only "[kind of](" engaged to FKA twigs. Then there were the [Katy Perry rumours](. A source tells The Sun that FKA and RPattz drifted apart in the past few months and that it was Rob who called off the engagement.
Rob is tired of it, has called off their engagement and told friends they have split. With so much history between them, though, there are still strong feelings there.
Wait. Rob was "tired?" The implication here is that Robert Pattinson got bored of FKA twigs. Robert Pattinson got bored of the only person who made him interesting in the past 3 years? Please. I do not believe that. This is a guy who proposed after a few months. When we were emailing about this, Lainey also found it hard to believe that HE is the one who broke up with HER. Plus, FKA twigs seems to be doing OK for someone who was supposedly dumped by a fiancé who got tired of her. [In August](, she was photographed in Ibiza with a male model named Brieuc Breitenstein. He already sounds more interesting than Robert Pattinson.
Here's my question for the TwiHard truthers who will no doubt take this split as some sort of affirmation that Kristen and Rob really live in domestic bliss in Montana and make jam with their two toddlers or whatever: IF this whole FKA twigs relationship was just an elaborate ruse, why would they end it? Wouldn't they just keep up appearances so Kristen and Rob could raise their children in peace? WOULDN'T THEY? Explain yourselves.
I'll be over here Gossip Genie-ing FKA twigs and John Boyega? No. Rami Malek? YES. I'll be over here coming up with an alternate universe where FKA twigs moves on from her Ibiza model to Rami Malek.

[Ben Affleck lost his good luck charm](
[Ben Affleck out in LA, October 11, 2017](
I was raised in a home that’s all about feng shui and good luck energy. Every year, my ma, the Chinese Squawking Chicken, provides predictions and readings for this site for every sign under the Chinese zodiac: what those born in the Year of the Monkey should avoid, if those born in the Year of the Dog should be cautious, or not, and specific good luck charms for each sign too. Charms can be things, something you attach to your wallet, a script that you can tuck into your car. Ma has always said too though that charms can be people. That there are certain people in your life who bring you good luck, or who protect you when you might be in for a round of bad luck. They shield you from bad luck. They can minimise the bad luck that befalls you. My ma herself, for example, is my good luck charm. Whenever I need luck the most, if ever I am struggling, something terrible happens to her. She collapses, she’s sent to the hospital. It’s not an intentional, conscious act. It just… happens. Like a divine sacrifice. She lays herself down so that I might walk over her, whether I want to or not. Over the course of my life, this has happened too many times for me to brush off as coincidence. It does not feel accidental to me. And while this may sound crazy to you, it’s become a fact in my world – and a constant anxiety. I do not want to see my mother unwell. I do not want to be the cosmic cause of her troubles. What do I do? What will I do? What will happen to us if I don’t?
Which brings us to Ben Affleck. [Ben Affleck]( is taking some sh-t right now. You heard yesterday [about Hilarie Burton]( and his rather [curt apology](. Then people dug up an inappropriate interview he did [with a reporter from Montreal]( and makeup artist Annamaria Tendler tweeted about the time [he groped her]( at a Golden Globes party in 2014 and other people claim they experienced the same. Basically Ben Affleck is having a no good very bad week. And it hasn’t exactly been a great year.
Ben Affleck was born the Year of the Rat. We’ve done this before but let’s revisit [the outlook for Rats]( that ma relayed to me in January. Once again, this was written IN JANUARY.
Rats are one of the four luckiest signs of the Chinese zodiac during this Year of the Rooster with a boost from three lucky stars. The presence of two shady stars however could make you the target of rumours and backstabbing. So you are advised to watch your mouth. Don’t offer comment unless you can back it up. Otherwise you may jeopardise your good fortune. Also, Rats can be prone to distraction, to be indirect, to not take a straight route, to run around in circles. (Ben Affleck was born under the sign of the Rat. Isn’t that SO him?) This will not help you and if you continue like this, money won’t come to you easily. You may be lucky but your lack of focus might make it hard for luck to land on you. Try, this year, to stay present and be purposeful in you decisions.
So Ben, the Rat, was supposed to be lucky this year. But he may have f-cked up his luck with all his accumulated mistakes, his distractions, his lack of focus, and of course his own grossness. At the beginning of this year, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner had yet to file for divorce. The ongoing reports around them at the time were all about whether or not they’d get back together and if there was a possibility of reconciliation. Jennifer Garner ended up filing in the spring. By early summer it was made public that Ben and Lindsay Shookus were together – and maybe had been together for longer than was initially suggested. After that, Ben’s status as Batman came into question. Everything got way sloppy.
[Jennifer Garner](, meanwhile, also a Rat, but one with much more focus and discipline, has maintained her popularity as an American Sweetheart. Was she his good luck charm when they were together? Was she his shield? Would her good luck have protected him from and minimised against his bad luck? Doesn’t matter. Because she peaced out. Just in time too. She was done with this sh-t months ago. She made it clear to us that she was done with the sh-t months ago. She’s nowhere near the splash. Luck is a precious thing. Sometimes we forget to treasure it. I feel like over the last few months, I’ve forgotten to treasure my ma. She’s coming over for dinner tonight, it’s my dad’s birthday. I will tell her this at the dinner table. And she will ask me for a cheque.

[Rotten Tomatoes isnât the problem](
[Martin Scorsese](
This week in non-Harvey news, [Martin Scorsese]( penned an op-ed for The Hollywood Reporter about how Rotten Tomatoes is ruining movies and everyone should stop obsessing over box office and Cinemascore and also he liked mother!. [Blaming Rotten Tomatoes]( for a movie’s failure became a favorite pastime this summer—but studios are still quick to use a “Certified Fresh” rating as a marketing tool—and Scorsese sounds about as “get off my lawn” as everyone else complaining about the internet’s impact on the film industry. But is Rotten Tomatoes really the problem? Or is Cinemascore or Box Office Mojo? Or is the problem that all these things make it harder to trick audiences into seeing bad movies, and bad movies are the problem?
Scorsese makes a good point, that there are movies audiences reject initially that later are revised upward to classic status—[Blade Runner 2049]( may turn out to be this kind of revision—and a Rotten Tomato or Cinemascore rating shouldn’t be the final word on a movie. As for the box office obsession, I can only point to the popularity of fantasy sports. Following the box office is no different than playing fantasy football—there are even [websites]( devoted to the “game”. Also, an interest in box office doesn’t necessarily translate into judgment of a film. I follow box office and I can tell you it has never affected how I think of a movie. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is one of my favorite movies of the last few years, and it [absolutely bombed](. I still love it.
But Scorsese’s biggest issue is Rotten Tomatoes and its impact on film criticism. Thanks to aggregators, there is now “a tone that is hostile to serious filmmakers”. Scorsese also observes a decline in “film criticism written by passionately engaged people with actual knowledge of film history”. I suppose he means a lack of people like Pauline Kael and an increase in people like me, who started out writing on a [personal blog]( (and is also [aggregated]( on Rotten Tomatoes). If he feels that deeply about it, maybe he should start a fund to support film criticism, and that is not a joke. Film criticism is no longer a viable career path, and that undoubtedly has an impact on the landscape of who is doing the criticizing and how they’re doing it. I would love to make my living writing full-time, and have the time and resources to do more in-depth criticism and write long-form, comparative essays, but I have a day job. My ambitions are limited by my resources, which is the case for most of the film writers I know.
This Rotten Tomatoes-inspired hostile tone and slathering pack of carnival barkers had it in for mother! from the beginning, according to Scorsese. He says, “Many people seemed to want to define the film, box it in, find it wanting and condemn it. And many seemed to take joy in the fact that it received an F grade from Cinemascore. This actually became a news story — mother! had been ‘slapped’ with the ‘dreaded’ Cinemascore F rating…” People wrote about mother!’s Cinemascore because it keeps the lights on. (Again, you want to see less of that kind of coverage, figure out how to help people make their living just writing criticism.)
But it’s also of legitimate interest to some people. I mention Cinemascores as a way to predict a movie’s performance, its “legs”, because box office can impact Oscar campaigns, and it can influence the deals we see get made. Do you think Patty Jenkins signs a [record contract]( if Wonder Woman wasn’t a crowd-pleasing, runaway hit? Of course not. She got record money because she made one of the biggest movies of the year, and the metrics of that success are box office, Cinemascore, and Rotten Tomatoes. Those three things tell us that Wonder Woman is wildly popular with critics, fans, and casual movie goers—the success trifecta.
Maybe Scorsese would prefer us to limit our conversations to the artistic merits of various films, to debate mother! and its many interpretations, but while I will happily talk movies as long as anyone wants to engage, interest in film goes beyond the artistic, it goes into the industry of it, too. For better or worse, people are interested in how movies get made, they’re interested in the sausage factory (and a lot of film writers rely on that extra-curricular interest to pay bills because criticism alone doesn’t). And I’m not sure that’s really a bad thing. Because an interested, engaged audience is NEVER a bad thing. But an interested, engaged audience is also harder to fool. There have been a lot of high profile bad movies this year, and no one was fooled by them.
There is a problem with the state of film today and it has more to do with the franchise-ification of the studios than any website. There’s too much money on the line for truly risky films, and when you do get something daring, like Blade Runner 2049 or mother!, studios are paranoid about making back their investment so they lean into tricky marketing that sets up the audience to expect something other than what they’re going to get—a recipe for disaster. Movies don’t fail because of Rotten Tomatoes or Cinemascore, they fail because they’re bad and audiences are too smart to be suckered by marketing gimmicks.

[Rose McGowan suspended by Twitter](
[Rose McGowan](
[Rose McGowan](, who just yesterday defended Lindsay Lohan after Lindsay defended Harvey Weinstein, urging people to consider that Lindsay was shaped by the system that we are all interrogating now, has been the most visible and vocal critic of [Harvey Weinstein](, not just over the last week, but over the last decade, even though for much of that time, she was never heard. Well, she’s being heard now, finally, and she’s never been louder. That, evidently, is a problem for people. It’s a problem for Twitter.
[TWITTER HAS SUSPENDED ME. THERE ARE POWERFUL FORCES AT WORK. BE MY VOICE. #ROSEARMY](
A post shared by Rose McGowan (@rosemcgowan) on
Oct 11, 2017 at 9:19pm PDT
Rose told Ben Affleck to f-ck off for implying that he didn’t know about Harvey’s behaviour but, perhaps more importantly, she’s been hammering The Weinstein Company, Bob Weinstein, and the board for distancing themselves from Harvey’s actions when it seems impossible that they not only wouldn’t have been aware but possibly may have enabled him. “Dissolve the board” is what she’s been hashtagging. And she’s also been calling out other, bigger companies, demanding a closer look at whoever’s been funding Weinstein projects, beyond The Weinstein Company, their corporate allies. In her Instagram post, she mentions the “powerful forces at work”. In the hierarchy of assholery, these powerful voices are more than individual, they’re institutions.
This is what Rose has been going after. [As I wrote yesterday](, The Weinstein Company is moving towards a name change to protect their business interests. This is the priority. And there still has been no update about that independent internal investigation that was promised. Not that there would be results so quickly but even when the results are compiled, how available will those findings be? What impact will those findings have on the business? Not just the Weinstein business but the business of all those who are connected to The Weinstein company? They’re facing threats from all sides.
There’s Rose who is demanding transparency and then there’s Harvey himself, in desperate conditions now, reportedly severely depressed but also seemingly defiant. Check out [this TMZ video]( from yesterday, of him leaving his daughter’s home, supposedly on his way to rehab in Arizona, engaging the paparazzi. He says he’s not doing OK but he’s trying, is hoping for a second chance. And … then he has a message. The message is that he’s always accommodated the paps, unlike the “f-cking pricks who treat you like sh-t”. And who would those be?
As I’ve been saying, Harvey Weinstein has a lot of sh-t on a lot of people. So I wonder if this is to be taken as a warning shot. And to whom. I wonder if this is a warning from a vindictive man who, the more he’s backed into a corner, the more vengeful he might become. I wonder if this is a warning that says if I go down, a lot of other people are coming down with me. If that’s the case, who’s in protection mode? And is that why Rose was silenced?
