[LaineyGossip.com - Calling all smuthounds!] Tuesday, October 03, 2017 [Intro for October 3, 2017]( [Taika Waititi]( Dear Gossips, Thor: Ragnarok will open in exactly a month from today, on November 3. Which means that, very soon, the cast and their charismatic director will be promoting the sh-t out of the movie around the world. Which means that we will soon see that charismatic director, Taika Waititi, on the red carpet. And this matters because Taika Waititi is one of few men whose clothing choices are as interesting, sometimes more, than what the women are wearing. So interesting that The Hollywood Reporter [profiled Taika’s style]( the other day as part of the early publicity push for Thor: Ragnarok. His most memorable style moment obviously was what he wore to Comic-Con back in July: [Sorry you're not me. @wallpaprkit]( A post shared by Taika Waititi (@taikawaititi) on Jul 21, 2017 at 6:23pm PDT It’s not just what you wear, it’s how you wear it. And Taika clearly understands the “how” of fashion as much as the “what” of it. Sarah’s been sharing her excitement about Taika’s vision for Thor for a long time, ever since it was announced that he would be directing. I’m not in the business of disagreeing with Sarah when it comes to nerd sh-t so I’ve been excited about it too. But I’ve become even more excited about Taika’s vision for his own celebrity. When a superhero movie comes out, it’s typically the actor playing the superhero who becomes the main attraction. They are, after all, the “movie stars”. Taika is not a “movie star”, but he has movie star qualities. He is becoming the main attraction of Thor: Ragnarok. And thus he’s getting main attraction treatment. More important, he’s SEEKING main attraction treatment. How many other directors are featured in The Hollywood Reporter talking about their personal style? How many other directors will eclipse most of the actors on the red carpet? I’m not mad at this at all. [Click here]( to read THR’s style profile on Taika Waititi. More on Taiki to come when the Thor press tour gets underway. Here she is at Louis Vuitton yesterday for Paris Fashion Week: Chriselle is a fashion and beauty blogger. She got her start on YouTube a few years ago and has become one of the most popular style influencers, regularly invited to fashion weeks around the world. Because that’s how brands are reaching people now, arguably more effectively than through their traditional celebrity partnerships. Michelle Williams is an LV ambassador. She is not, however, on social media, at least not publicly. But her best friend is. We talked about Busy Philipps on [Show Your Work]( a couple of months ago when Busy revealed that she made more money [last year]( on Instagram than she had acting. (By the way, to give you an idea of Chriselle Lim’s impact on the game, she actually has more Instagram followers than Busy – substantially more.) Busy’s skill on social media, then, is an asset. So when she accompanies Michelle Williams to the Louis Vuitton presentation in Paris, it ends up being a bonus for LV. Because it’s not like Michelle’s Instagramming about the experience. Michelle’s wearing the clothes and posing on the carpet. Busy’s the one sending the message out to her followers. [Oh here we are! Thank you @louisvuitton and @nicolasghesquiere for the incredible two days in Paris with my best friend Michelle and the chance to see all of the beautiful clothing up close. And thank you @magpiejd for the 📸 (and also all of the other things!)]( A post shared by Busy Philipps (@busyphilipps) on Oct 3, 2017 at 10:49am PDT For Busy, it’s about friendship, the time spent with her ride or die. And I get that. So let me be the petty one to ask whether or not, eventually, she’ll get a cut, more than just a bag or a pair of shoes here and there. Louis Vuitton is part of LVMH, a huge conglomerate. It’s not like they don’t have the money. That said, it’s not like Busy is hurting. She was just profiled in [The New Yorker](, specifically because of her Instagram presence. And there’s a quote from Michelle about Busy’s appeal. Instagram just landed Busy a book deal, a collection of essays, the written version of her Insta stories. Which I will 100% buy and read. “Authenticity” is the buzzword that’s quickly becoming annoying where celebrity management is concerned. But the truth is, Busy Phillips does it really well. As she told The New Yorker: “I just want to make stuff for myself that I find interesting, and I’m not interested in trying to convince other people to give me jobs or put me on television in any way.” I believe her. I believe that all along, Busy on Instagram was just doing Busy. And that it’s actually opened up more opportunities for her when conventional opportunities weren’t happening. It is fascinating though. That social media created all kinds of new careers for people, like Chriselle Lim, so much so that now, celebrities who came up the “traditional” way are accessing fame in those spaces too. According to Deadline, about 300 people attended, and one of the things they talked about was Netflix, and their potential eligibility in future Oscar races. Netflix has managed success at the Emmys, but they have yet to be a force at the Oscars, though it seems the Academy is preemptively worried about the day they field a real contender. Or maybe what they’re really worried about is the degrading theatrical audience and Netflix is the scapegoat. Or perhaps they’re worried about filmmakers making deals with Netflix (which is eager to support the kinds of projects traditional studios and distributors won’t touch anymore). Maybe the [Coen Brothers defecting]( was the last straw. It doesn’t matter, because this Netflix stuff is the same as the diversity stuff is the same as the ratings stuff—just f*cking join the 21 century, Oscars. Sh*t is changing. Deal with it. True Story: I have been trying to see Columbus for a whole MONTH. It’s a limited release, with a slow, microscopically expanding platform. I live in Chicago, a Top 10 Major Market, and I only just made it to a screening. And you know what? It’s SPECTACULAR. It’s the “kind of movie they just don’t make anymore”. (Full review coming tomorrow.) It’s a movie I am eager for everyone to see, but simply put, not everyone can see it. If it took a month for me to get to it, there isn’t a chance in hell anyone living in a small market will get it, and the mid-level cities are a total crapshoot. And that’s a shame, because this is one of the best films I’ve seen all year. Leaving the theater, I thought—I wish this was on Netflix. I wish it was that easy for people to see. And that is it, in simplest terms. Ease of access now belongs to Netflix, streaming services, and VOD. It’s cheaper and easier for people to stay at home and watch a movie on their TV. Does that make it less of a movie? Of course not, just as the advent of sound didn’t make talkies any less of a film than a silent movie. But that’s where we are—we’re reliving the introduction of sound to cinema. I’ve been predicting this shift for seven years, since I started writing about film. To me, the issue was so obvious I honestly thought we’d get here sooner. But the film industry—and the Academy that represents it—has dragged their feet in a way that suggests they’ve never heard of Napster. And worse, it suggests they’ve forgotten their own goddamn history. Film has survived a major technological shift before. It can survive this one, too, but it takes dealing frankly with the changes, not trying to legislate against them through the Academy. Unless we wake up tomorrow and distributors and theater owners have come to some magical agreement wherein ticket prices plunge to $5, home viewing is the future of cinema. There will always be a place for theatrical viewing, but it won’t be the main way we watch movies because people literally cannot afford it. It’s not Netflix, it’s not Rotten Tomatoes, it’s the f*cking ticket prices driving down attendance. (Programs like Moviepass barely make a dent in the problem.) And because of that, the risk of theatrical distribution has grown so great that a wonderful film like Columbus can barely make it into theaters. So fight Netflix. Ban them from your film festivals, exclude them from your award shows. But do it at the price of your own relevance. YOU'RE A LEGEND.]( A post shared by Kaia (@kaiagerber) on Oct 3, 2017 at 3:24am PDT She was built to be adored by Karl though, non? As IF he wasn’t waiting for Kaia all along. I’ve been looking at Kaia for the last month, through all the fashion weeks, and trying to figure out who she reminds me of. Her mother, obviously, since there’s such a strong resemblance but you know who else, because also obviously? When Cindy first started, do you remember her nickname? It was “Baby Gia”. After Gia Carangi. It’s the 80s makeup on the Chanel runway and on Kaia’s face. That’s what did it. I was OBSESSED with Gia Carangi. Even before Angelina Jolie played her. Because I was obsessed with the models of that era and because I read Stephen Fried’s book about Gia’s life, Thing Of Beauty. Gia was only 17 when she moved to New York. She was a big deal within a year. She was dead at 26. You know what’s amazing to me? It’s amazing that, looking back now, how much more mature they seemed then, even though they were all still teenagers. Gia was just 22 years old when this interview happened. Compare that to celebrities now who are in their 20s. Obviously, by this point, even though she was just 22, Gia had already been deeply, deeply troubled for quite some time. And this appearance was supposed to be a comeback of sorts. There’s really nothing young adult here about her though. You can tell that she knew the worst of the world. Of course that’s one of the lessons of her life – how innocence can be compromised, both by the “vultures” at home and in the business. Which never happened to [Cindy Crawford](. Cindy Crawford was valedictorian when she graduated high school. She went to university on a scholarship to study engineering. She quit university to become a model, one of the most successful models of all time, with one of the best reputations. There were never stories about Cindy not showing up, or showing up late, or being unprofessional. Cindy Crawford isn’t stupid. And I have to think this is why she’s been with Kaia the whole time – from New York to London to Milan and now in Paris. Kaia is still on Cindy’s watch. You know what else might make a difference? Cindy is already CINDY CRAWFORD. She doesn’t need this. She doesn’t need to exist through Kaia. As Duana points out often on [Show Your Work](, particularly when we’re talking about child stars, they’re a lot more vulnerable when they have to be the breadwinner, when the entire family depends on their success. That’s not to say that it doesn’t happen. That the privileged kids don’t off-rail. But their chances are undeniably so much better. Hollywood fratboy [Brett Ratner]( is going to produce and direct a biopic of Hef, which will star [Jared Leto](. How do you think Leto will get into character? What Method treats will his castmates live in terror of receiving? What stories of debauchery and objectification will we be subjected to as Leto “entertains” us with his Method acting? Is it too much to hope he just wears pajamas for a year and leaves it at that? And who thinks BRETT RATNER is capable of delivering a nuanced portrait of a man who both liberated publishing, advocated for reproductive rights, and entrapped women in a tightly controlled, narrowly performed definition of femininity and beauty that has tortured us into unnatural body shapes and unrealistic expectations of sex and pleasure? In case you think this is a new, tribute-inspired project—it’s not. A Hef biopic has been bouncing around town for years, ricocheting between studios, producers, and stars (RDJ was once attached). Hugh Hefner is one of the most famous, recognizable men in America. Why has it been so hard to get a biopic off the ground? Movies are hard to make, but also, it’s a BAD IDEA. Hugh Hefner was not entirely a bad person, but he wasn’t a paragon of First Amendment virtue, either (see also: [browbeating journalists](). And it’s an oversimplification to say we have a divisive relationship with Playboy. For generations of boys—and probably some girls, though that certainly wasn’t Hef’s intention—it was their introduction to pants-feelings, but it’s arguably done more to harm sexual politics than help. So again I ask, does anyone think Brett Ratner is the right person to bring Hef to the screen? Honestly, Jared Leto playing Hef is an afterthought, mostly just good for jokes about his Method ways. Ratner is the real point of concern. To tell Hefner’s life story is to tell the story of a sexual revolution aimed solely at straight white men. It’s the story of a brilliant publisher who basically invented the concept of “leaking nudes” when he published nude photos of Marilyn Monroe without her knowledge or permission (and then had the gall to think being buried next to her is romantic). It’s the presentation of an aspirational lifestyle based on dominating and controlling women, and performative masculinity that rewards behavior we consider toxic today. If a Hef biopic must be made, I’d prefer it to come from a female filmmaker, or an LGBTQ filmmaker, or maybe someone who didn’t grow up in America with Playboy, and therefore doesn’t see it with romantic nostalgia. Or really, anyone who isn’t exactly the kind of person Hef considered his audience. I wrote that she gave me hope on a day the world was reeling from the election of a racist, bigoted shriveled up sweet potato masquerading as a human being. [Zendaya]( is never afraid to use her voice and at 21 years old, that voice is stronger, clearer, more confident and rational than so many high-profile people twice her age. Yesterday was a horrific day. Yesterday, I read Zendaya's Glamour profile [written by Yara Shahidi]( and once again, Zendaya gave me hope on a sh-t day. It may seem silly considering how utterly appalling it is to just turn on the news or scroll through Twitter right now but two Gen Zers talking about their influence, their blackness, owning up to their light-skinned privilege and their love of Oprah and Beyonce was my light in the darkness. Reading a conversation between these two successful, self-aware, socially-conscious black girls gave me hope for the next generation on a day when dreaming about the future felt hopeless for so many. The feature starts with a beautiful intro about Zendaya's career and versatility. [Yara]( writes that Zendaya has fought for representation. She writes that it would be easy for two young black actresses around the same age to be in constant competition. Instead, they build each other up. Instead, they “dismantle that myth.” There have been many times this year that I read a sentence that seems so self-explanatory, logical and downright basic that I can’t believe we still have to say this sh-t in 2017. Most of the time, those sentences are about reproductive rights or gun control laws. This time, it’s about representation. Because, at the most basic level, we need to see a variety of characters whose likenesses reflect the society we live in. How is this still a battle we’re fighting in 2017? An 18-year-old shouldn’t have to write that a 21-year-old is, “dedicated to showing young people that they are meant to be seen and counted. And that they are never, ever just one thing.” We should be there already. But we’re not. Here’s where the hope comes in. Zendaya and Yara Shahidi are using their influence to make sure we’re not still fighting these battles in 2057. Maybe it’s naïve to think that we won’t be but reading this conversation made me believe that if anyone can make a difference, it’s young black women with the determination to try. YARA: Our generation has a lot going on right now: from North Korea to Charlottesville— ZENDAYA: It’s insane. YARA: It’s slightly insane. ZENDAYA: Here’s the thing—I can genuinely say that I’m not the same person I was a year ago. As my social platforms grew, I realized that my voice was so much more important than I had originally thought. I think if every young person understood the power of their voice, things would be a lot different. And it’s becoming more popular to be outspoken. YARA: I know. It no longer feels like an option whether or not to be active. We can’t ignore what’s happening. It’s also forced us to segue into something a little more hopeful. To Zendaya and Yara, activism no longer feels like an option. “It’s becoming more popular to be outspoken.” To me, when being opinionated, engaged and active is what the cool kids are doing, that’s progress. This is what Zendaya posted on Instagram yesterday… [This is a list of the deadliest mass shootings in recent US history. Now we add the deadliest to this list. There is no post I can make that will heal the pain and heartache that is being felt in Las Vegas today, but we NEED change. We can not continue to let this list grow. And working on their comedic voices in a space that’s entirely outside of where traditional comedy used to happen. That’s not to say that gigging in a club several times a week isn’t done anymore. It’s still done, of course, and that muscle is trained in small rooms where silence is the worst, where the goal is to generate audible laughter. But while the internet room is much bigger, it too comes with its own form of silence – and laughter that isn’t necessarily heard, but it is certainly felt. In binary form. Word is, [Chris Hemsworth]( realised that Thor needed a tone change. And by all accounts he was fully into Taika’s vision, eager to explore a funnier, lighter side of his character. What’s interesting to me is that not only did he welcome the overhaul but that he seems to have also accepted that that overhaul would mean that he couldn’t do it alone, that he would have to share, and that in sharing, Thor might not actually be the best part of the movie. Hulk and Loki, played by Mark Ruffalo and Tom Hiddleston, have joined Thor on this adventure. The formidable Cate Blanchett is in as the big bad. The movie is about Thor, in name, for sure, but the hook for us is that Thor’s road-tripping across universes (at least I think this is what’s happening?) with his buddies. Some Hollywood egos couldn’t handle that. And movies are often worse off for it. Thor, it seems, will be better off that it’s not just Thor on the ride. And in the end, if it works out that way, it’ll actually make Chris Hemsworth look better. Which seems like simple math. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you though that this is not how it happens, in Hollywood or in real life. How many times have you watched someone at work not be willing to collaborate or share on the load – and in their minds the final credit? Duana and I have a friend, a very effective leader, who has the best perspective when it comes to fair management: “it doesn’t cost me anything”. This is what the insecurity is though. That in sharing, it might somehow cost, that the person who won’t do the sharing will lose out for sharing. Which is, obviously, totally myopic. Chris Hemsworth isn’t showing me that though. I don’t know if the got there on his own or if it’s the team around him, steering his career in the right way, but together they’ve made some good decisions. I can’t wait to talk about him on Show Your Work when we get back. Soon. Thanks for your message about when Season 2 is starting. We’ll have a date for you by the end of the week. In times like these, prioritising mental health is more important than ever. As we have seen, however, mental health has been misunderstood and often mistreated. Many have suffered in silence and shame due to lack of awareness and lack of resources. Bev’s son was diagnosed with multiple mental health issues when he was just 15. He was hospitalised for a month and is now at SickKids Centre for Community Mental Health getting the help he needs. It is the beginning of a long journey. Children with a physical illness often experience mental illness at the same time. For example, a child newly diagnosed with cancer may develop depression. Or a teen who has recently lost a parent and is unable to express their grief may experience chronic pain, even if there is no evidence of physical trauma. These illnesses are inseparable, but many health care programs are not set up to treat them as such. As a result, individuals with both a mental and physical illness and their families do not receive the comprehensive, coordinated care they need. Too often a child with unexplained physical symptoms is simply turned awar. Or a youth’s acute condition becomes the sole focus of her care, while their mental illness goes unrecognized and hinders their ability to recover. Bev is specifically supporting SickKids because of their dedication to not only sick children but to the continued wellbeing of the family as a whole.
