She died just weeks after Georgia's abortion ban went into effect because doctors delayed performing a D&C — a common practice I've performed countless times for my patients. Candi Miller's doctors warned that having another baby could kill her. Georgia's abortion ban didn't include exceptions for chronic conditions like hers, so she attempted a medical abortion at home. She died in bed, leaving behind her husband and 3 kids. As a doctor, I want to emphasize that medication abortion is incredibly safe. The maternal mortality panel who reviewed these cases made it clear: It's the culture of fear — for patients and doctors — created by Georgia's abortion ban that killed them.
