[] The new space race is seriously taking off, according to the most recent issue of [The Kiplinger Letter](. Global revenue for the market is set to nearly double through 2030 as an estimated 25,000 satellites will be ordered and launched over the next decade, according to Northern Sky Research, a space market research company. Emerging technologies include broadband megaconstellations from SpaceX, Amazon and OneWeb; ultraprecise earth imaging from Planet, BlackSky and Spire; and launch services from Rocket Lab, Relativity Space, Blue Origin and many others. Recent global turmoil has highlighted the importance of space technology like never before. For example, the supply chain crisis underscored how the latest geospatial imagery can help track supply chains to uncover bottlenecks in near real-time. The Ukraine war showed [how critical space is in areas of conflict]( for applications such as fast, resilient broadband and detailed satellite photography. [] The surge in omicron-2 variant COVID-19 continues in the Northeast, Midwest and Pacific coast, but what is notable is that the surge has developed more slowly than any previous ones. Perhaps the large runup in omicron-1 infections in January helped build immunity in more people. Booster shots of vaccines have likely helped as well. While none of the affected states have yet seen a peak in infections, it seems likely that when these peaks do happen, they will be at lower levels than previous surge peaks. The slowness also means that it could take a while for omicron-2 to spread to all parts of the U.S., which it is still expected to do, eventually. A complicating factor is that a sub-variant of omicron-2, called 2.12.1, now accounts for a third of U.S. infections. This sub-variant may cause the infection rate to speed up a bit. “Long COVID,” or the persistence of COVID-related symptoms far beyond the normal infection period, is starting to receive serious scientific study. While the cases are quite varied, they are happening frequently enough to warrant attention. The theory is that the virus could have the ability to hide in parts of the body. Currently, there are no treatments specifically for long COVID, but Paxlovid has been used to successfully treat COVID symptoms. However, even with Paxlovid, there have been cases of viral reactivation, where the symptoms return after disappearing for a while. The causes of this are still unknown.
