At the beginning of my copywriting career, I had a toxic relationship with success. More than anything, I wanted to be a great writer. But no matter what I did, true success -- the kind they write about -- evaded me. And I didn't know why. I remember reading "success stories" about other writers who ran into a wall, tried one thing and then, suddenly, everything clicked. And yet, when I'd try the same "one thing," I wouldn't get any where near the same results. Sure, I'd see little improvements here and there. But NEVER the kinds of things I'd read about. So, deep down, in the shadowy parts of me, I always wondered if something inside me was broken. I couldn't fight back thoughts that I wasn't the kind of person who would EVER be successful. And that sucked! Because on more than one occasion, those feelings genuinely made me want to quit. In fact, I remember one time back in 2018 (after a particularly devastating blow to my ego), I was strongly considering going back to a career in finance. *GASP* I KNOW. I still shudder when I think about what would have happened if I did. Later, I'd be on the other side of those "success stories" and learn it was never really just one thing that created those successes. It was almost always thousands of prior actions, years of hard work, that culminated in one moment that somebody deemed to be worthy of pointing out. A lot of people ask me what advice I'd give to beginners who are running into a wall. It's funny because I've written [long post]( about it, written dozens of emails and even [created videos]( about starting over from scratch. But really my best, most meaningful, and path-altering piece advice would simply be... ...KEEP GOING. Because almost every problem you'll face as a beginner can be solved with this simple phrase. Struggling to get your first client? Keep going. The only way you'll never get a client is if you quit. Copy isn't as sharps you want it to be? Keep going. The only way you don't get better is if you stop practicing. Not as fulfilled as you want to be with writing? Keep going. Passion follows skill. In other words, once you get good, it's even more fun to write. I know... It's not as pretty as the "one thing that changed everything," but for me at least, it's true. Remember, you'd never look at painter's sketch and say, "WOW, you suck!" It takes time to create a masterpiece. It's okay to practice and redo. You have permission to go at your own pace. But don't, for as long as you can, ever give up. Rob "Will also keep writing these middle names" Allen Want to watch 50 marketing experts share all their Black Friday secrets for free? Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
