As a copywriter, two of the most important "tools" you have at your disposal are: 1. your brain and... 2. your ability to focus. And yet, also as copywriters, we're surrounded by devices and work in apps that are designed to zap your concentration and make you addicted to them. Yes, there are entire teams at Facebook and YouTube that want nothing more than you to spend all day on their platforms. It's frustrating because as marketers we kind of want this too. But at what cost? Some of the biggest copywriting breakthroughs I've ever had have came when I closed my computer, grabbed a pen and paper and journaled for half a day. And yet, more and more often, I find it difficult to get these quiet moments where I can sit and think with no distractions. And I'm someone who works from home, has no kids and a supportive partner! I can't imagine how tough it would be if any of those factors got shifted against me. And yet this is also the reality for so many people. I don't know about you, but I can feel the mental pull to check and refresh. And I'm literally being pushed notifications in 24 different ways 24 hours a day. All that to say, I want my brain back. So recently I've been experimenting with dopamine detoxing. This is where I put away my phone away, don't use my computer and just get outside in nature for hours on end. Some people do this "detox" for days, but for me, even for just a few hours or one day on the weekend has been profound. How does it help? For one, I realize how small most of my problems are in the grand scheme of things. Nothing is more humbling than seeing how tiny you are next to a mountain. Second, once I push past the "uncomfortable" zone of wanting to check my phone constantly, it's crazy how much more you notice and feel in the world when you aren't experiencing it through your device. Finally, I find my mind going past the shallow thoughts of "respond to that email!" to much deeper more meaningful ideas and I LOVE that. I'm still in the process of fully detoxing from all the dopamine I get on a daily basis, but I might be sharing more about this in the near future because I think it's CRITICAL for anyone working in creative fields. And if you're someone who's been struggling with focus recently or felt like you're only living in the shallowest side of your mind, you might consider trying a dopamine detox of your own this coming weekend. I just finished one in the mountains and feel so much better and more motivated for the week. Rob "Currently Detoxing... Check Back Soon" Allen P.S. Do you like the idea of doing a dopamine detox?
