The recipes that got away. [Ends Tonight: Free Shipping on Orders Over $75 ›]( [logo]( Sunday Recipe Inspiration with Kye Batch 439 [Jam-Bellied Scones]( Members of the King Arthur Recipe Team recently revealed our long-lost loves — the ones we think about longingly, that bring us bittersweet warmth. No, I'm not talking about our first middle school crushes or exes from the past. I'm talking about those recipes that have earned a special place in your memory but slip through your fingers — those you're never able to recreate again. The first was a spicy pizza discovered by our managing editor, Chris, and his wife on a gray evening in Seattle. They were starving and ducked into a little hole in the wall restaurant and ordered the Cherry Bomb Pizza, complete with South African spicy-sweet peppers that struck just the right balance of "yum, " and "whoa!" While Chris never learned what those special peppers were, he now makes our [Neapolitan-Style Pizza]( on a regular basis, and as he notes, it helps fill the cherry-bomb-shaped hole in his pizza-loving heart. Molly, one of our senior recipe developers, reminisced about a treat that arrived via mail from Ohio: tender, melt-in-your-mouth sugar cookies filled with jam. Molly tried to recreate the cookies by stuffing jam inside classic sugar cookie dough. Alas, the jam refused to stay put and unfailingly ended up spread across the [baking sheet]( rather than inside the cookies. (Thank goodness for [parchment paper]( to prevent hours of clean up!) Molly hasn't cracked the code (yet), but these [Jam-Bellied Scones]( (above) are a fantastic way to enjoy a jam-stuffed baked good in the meantime. Sometimes recipes are special not just because of the baked good itself but because of the baker who produced it. That's the case with Rossi, our blog editor, and the long-lost lemon meringue pie her mom grew up eating every birthday, baked by her mom. She never got to taste it, but now on her mom's birthday, she bakes our [Lemon Meringue Pie]( recipe and serves it with gusto on the same pie plate that's been passed down from her grandmother. (Start a family tradition with a trusty [pie pan]( of your own.) Fellow Sunday email author PJ Hamel describes the long-lost love that's perhaps the most bittersweet of the bunch. It's a deep-dark, delicious "shadow cake," that's entwined with memories of her sister (and Brigham's Ice Cream Bakery, where she believes the recipe originated). Her sister described moist, chocolate cake layers covered in a marshmallow-y, [7-minute-style frosting](. [Chocolate ganache]( crowned the cake around the edges, dripping down the sides lusciously. PJ notes that she never did get a chance to make this recipe for her sister and asks if any of you have what might be Brigham's Shadow Cake recipe, please do share it with us. My long-lost love? You'll have to wait for my next Sunday email to find out. I'll keep you waiting (and hopefully baking) between now and then.
