[SHOP THIS TOTE IN THE VOICE SHOP]( SPREADING THE MESSAGE As one of the first brands to speak publicly about HIV/AIDS, we’ve spent the last 30 years raising awareness, promoting prevention, and generating research funding through our unique voice and platform. [This is our first ever HIV/AIDS ad for amfAR. Back then, everyone needed to know that they were at risk: gay, straight, drug users, non-drug users, men, women, and children. Kenneth enlisted renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz, and recruited most of the current supermodels of that time. He knew the women’s beauty and fame would draw attention to the ad, but he believed the faces of children could potentially do more to destigmatize the disease than any amount of celebrity. ]( [Back then, it became clear that both condoms and clean needles were essential in preventing the spread of AIDS in America. Unfortunately, it was illegal to advertise a condom, let alone distribute clean needles. Nonetheless, we airbrushed out the brand name and ran this ad anyway. We thought the silhouette of the condom might be mistaken for a UFO or a graduation hat, but we think most people recognized it.]( [For World AIDS Day 1992, we used this simple, yet iconic shoelace in the shape of the AIDS ribbon. We used this image many times later because it was the perfect visual for a company known for its footwear and for raising HIV/AIDS awareness. (We really were keeping others in the loop.)]( [The original version of this ad ran in 1992. It was an impactful ad that highlighted how much the epidemic was infiltrating our lives. A year later, the same ad became even more powerful with just a couple of simple handwritten changes.]( [For this revolutionary PSA campaign, Kenneth united famous HIV/AIDS activists to stand for one message. Many of them represented their own charities and organizations, but in an act of solidarity, they all put their bestfoot forward for this effort. The campaign was photographed in New York, Los Angeles, and South Africa by Mark Seliger.]( A MAN ON A MISSION Kenneth has been a leading voice in the global response to HIV and AIDS for more than 30 years, and was chairman of The Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) from 2004 to 2018. In recognition of his outstanding commitment and HIV/AIDS advocacy, he was appointed as a UNAIDS International Goodwill Ambassador at the 2016 United Nations General Assembly on Ending AIDS. In that role Kenneth continues to be a passionate champion for people living with HIV or AIDS and works to rally the global community to end the AIDS epidemic, once and for all.
