It's Tuesday, Feb. 06, and we're covering banning the hunting of mountain lions, Chamber of Commerce bills, NFL taking flag football seriously, and much more. First time reading? Sign up here. American Fact of the Day! Nebraskans are Called “Cornhuskers”: It may not sound flattering, but Nebraskans are proud to be called “Cornhuskers,” or “Huskers” for short, which is also the nickname of the University of Nebraska football team. In case you haven’t figured it out, a cornhusker is a person who removes the husks from corn as part of the harvesting process. Nebraska feeds and fuels the nation, coming in third among the states in corn production, second in ethanol production, and first in cattle feed. Breaking Updates Colorado Activists Pushing Ballot Initiative to Ban Hunting of Mountain Lions [An advocacy committee called CATs, or Cats Aren’t Trophies,]( is backing ballot initiative 91 to ban trophy hunting of mountain lions as well as fur trapping of bobcats, explained Samantha Miller, a Grand Lake resident and CATs campaign manager. “What we are seeking is a paradigm shift so that we are managing for healthy ecosystems,” Miller said. “To me, what’s really alarming is we are continuing to manage mountain lions to be hunted and not for ecosystem health. If we are looking at the big picture, which is[health of ecosystems across the state,](mountain lion trophy hunting is not needed to manage the population, and lions play an essential role in the ecosystem.” However, officials and researchers at CPW, which has managed mountain lion numbers since 1965, say the population growth of humans in Colorado does not allow animals to be managed solely based on natural ecosystems. CPW game species are managed according to what some experts refer to as a “social carrying capacity.” [In other words, the wildlife biologists who work for the state]( of Colorado, whose job it is to manage wildlife, whose expertise we supposedly rely on, are against this, but the activists want to go ahead anyway. So much for "believe the science." These animals are in no way endangered. Managing wildlife — especially predators — by ballot initiative is a bad idea, especially when the voters in favor are overwhelmingly urban liberals who will never be within a mile of the animals in question. In a statement released by the US Chamber of Commerce, executive vice president and chief policy officer Neil Bradley emphasized the bill's importance. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is pleased to see desperately needed border security, asylum, and immigration reforms included in the emergency supplemental funding proposal before the U.S. Senate. The economic disruption and human suffering wrought by our border crisis have become so severe that Congress cannot afford to ignore these problems any longer. We look forward to working with Members of Congress to pass these commonsense measures that will improve [America’s security by addressing our southern border and supporting Ukraine]( and Israel. The IS Chamber of Commerce's support for the so-called border security bill comes as the RNC faces a cash and confidence crisis under Trump-selected Ronna McDaniel's management, and the control of the House and Senate hangs in the balance. [What is more than a little unclear is why the GOP should go along](with a terribly flawed bill that does nothing to stop the massive flow of illegal immigrants that has damaged the quality of life in American cities and has the potential to create a new, semipermanent, welfare-dependent underclass.
