A new mission may be racing to meet it In April 2029, asteroid Apophis, approximately 1,230 feet (375 meters) wide, will pass within 19,883 miles (32,000 kilometers) of Earth, closer than many satellites and ten times nearer than the Moon. This close encounter presents a rare opportunity for scientific study, as it will be visible to the naked eye for around 2 billion people across Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia. The European Space Agency (ESA) is preparing its Ramses spacecraft to accompany Apophis during this event, aiming to gather crucial data about the asteroid's composition, structure, and how it interacts with Earth's gravity. Ramses, slated to launch in April 2028, will arrive at Apophis in February 2029, contingent upon approval at ESA’s Ministerial Council meeting in November 2025. Named after the Egyptian god of chaos, Apophis was initially a concern for potential impacts in 2029 and 2068, but subsequent observations have ruled out any threat for at least a century. NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies uses radar and telescopes to track such asteroids, maintaining vigilance over those that come close enough to pose a potential hazard. The Ramses mission is designed to study Apophis up close, exploring its shape, surface, and the effects of Earth’s gravitational forces. This data could yield insights into how asteroids like Apophis could be redirected if on a collision course with Earth, contributing to planetary defense strategies. Partnering with NASA's OSIRIS-APEX mission, Ramses underscores international cooperation in planetary science, building on previous collaborations aimed at enhancing our understanding and ability to mitigate potential asteroid impacts.
