In December 2020, the Affordable Connectivity program, or ACP was created. It eventually [attracted more than 23 millions subscribers](, which is one out of six U.S. homes, in rural, suburban, and urban America. Jessica Rosenworcel wrote that this demand shows "that too many working families are trapped on the wrong end of the digital divide due to their struggle to pay for service" in a statement released Friday. In a letter to lawmakers, the FCC chairwoman wrote that "Additional funding by Congress is the only solution near-term" for keeping this program running. Rosenworcel pointed out that previous federal efforts to bridge the digital divide focused long on providing high-speed Internet in all areas without giving much thought to whether people could pay for it. In the first week following the launch of the ACP precursor in May 2021, [more than 1 million households signed up.]( Rosenworcel stated that "each of the ACP subscribers who no longer receive an ACP benefit represents a family or individual in need of a little help in order to be connected to the modern world." "And 68% had intermittent connectivity or no connectivity before ACP." The FCC chief said that many ACP recipients were seniors with fixed incomes. Losing the benefit meant having to choose between going online or sacrificing other necessities like food or gas. We also heard from a woman in Alabama, 47 years old, who is returning to school to be a psychologist. She could now use her laptop instead of phone to keep up with online classwork. [The ACP program will officially end on June 1, 2024.](To smooth the transition, the FCC froze enrollments in February. According to the agency, approximately 3.4 million households in rural areas and over 300,000 households located in tribal regions are affected, as well more than 4 million households that have an active duty or former military member. The FCC has another program, Lifeline, that is not intended to replace the ACP but provides eligible households with a monthly benefit of $9.25 on broadband service. Read more updates[here]( Homeless High School Student Graduates as Valedictorian [A Louisiana student beat the odds to graduate high school with the highest grade in his class, despite living in a homeless shelter.]( Elijah Hogan began his high school education in 2020, during the peak of the coronavirus epidemic. He just finished his senior year at Walter L. Cohen High School while living at Covenant House, a homeless shelter for youth under the age of 22 in New Orleans. Hogan, who was in his final year of high school, told "Good Morning America," "It has been rough and tough, I have had a few falls and trips, but it's okay." [Hogan credits his success to the strong community he found at Walter L. Cohen and Covenant House.]( "I had people who were there to support me through it." "I wouldn't be where I am now as valedictorian without them," Hogan said. He cited fellow students, staff, and teachers for their support. Hogan graduated with a 3.93 GPA and is one of the two valedictorians of the Cohen Charter High School in New Orleans’ Uptown district.
