We need more progressive fighters like Katie. [Truth to Power PAC]( Want to hear a PERFECT breakdown of the affordable housing crisis in the United States? Katie gave one at a recent Oversight Committee field hearing in Maui, where she spoke about the critical need for affordable housing not just in disaster response, but for all Americans, everywhere. This is another example of Katie bringing Congress to the people, to focus on issues for the people. We’d be a lot better off if we had more leaders like her in Congress, who focus squarely on what communities need, not what corporations want. [Will you chip in $5 to help elect more Congressmembers who will put American families first?]( A persistent shortage of affordable housing is already a crisis for families. When disaster strikes, it can spiral into a full-brown catastrophe. Unfortunately, Maui’s long recovery from last year’s wildfires is a perfect example of what happens when policymakers don’t center families’ biggest problems, like affordable housing, before disaster comes along. As Katie said in the hearing, “Competition with tourists—mainlanders scooping up properties to rent as vacation homes—combined with a lack of new construction played a part in putting stable, affordable housing out of reach for many of the families who live and work here. The wildfires supercharged Maui’s housing crisis.” The housing crisis is playing out in communities from from Maui to Miami, wildfires are raging right now across the western United States, and forecasts earlier this year predicted a record-breaking hurricane season. Our lawmakers can’t keep kicking the can on housing and climate. Katie’s working hard so that all Americans can afford the housing they deserve, but we need more leaders like her. That’s where you come in. We’re working to elect a new wave of Democrats who will do the job of Congress the way Katie does, prioritizing action on the issues that matter most to families: [Will you chip in $5 or more right now to help?]( [Donate ›››]( Thanks, Team Truth to Power Katie Porter started Truth to Power to support Democrats who reject corporate PAC money and are running to protect the environment, restore the nationwide right to an abortion, and create an economy that works for working people.
