(Getty Images) Stepping Down It’s the end of an era: Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced that he plans to exit his leadership role — which he assumed in 2007 — in November. The veteran lawmaker leaves behind a complicated political legacy. He’s had a formidable influence over the Republican party and helped advance GOP priorities, like tax cuts. But he also clashed with Donald Trump and some say the former president has made his job impossible. “McConnell detests Trump, but the Republicans are increasingly a Trumpist party, and McConnell would have faced a serious challenge if he tried to stay in power,” former Senate staffer Ira Shapiro tells us.
