What we know about the shooting in Kansas City. [For the best experience, read in browser.]( [Wake-Up Call] [by Katie Couric Media] February 15, 2024 Good morning. We’ve got the details of the horrific shooting in Kansas City, then we’re sharing updates on the Israel-Hamas war. Later on, we explain [what the future of Covid could look like](, according to the CDC’s rumored new guidelines. Plus we’ve got a sneak peek at [the book anyone dealing with cancer needs to read]( — it’s by my friend Kathy Giusti, who I interviewed about [how to navigate the complex web of diagnosis](. Thanks for waking up with us.   In the News [Fans attending the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl parade leave the area following a shooting]( Fans attending the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl parade flee the area. (Getty Images) Celebration to Tragedy What should have been a joyous day in Kansas City ended in terror after a deadly shooting at a parade celebrating the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory. Here’s what we know so far: What happened? The shooters opened fire at a rally attended by thousands of fans. Kansas City-area radio station KKFI said DJ Lisa Lopez-Galvan, who was "a volunteer who donated her time and talent to KKFI," was killed. Authorities say three people have been detained, but haven’t released any other details. Who was injured? At least 21 people received gunshot wounds. Per the New York Times, one local hospital is treating 11 injured children, including nine who were shot. Authorities are still working to determine the total number of victims. The response: Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas called the shooting "a tragedy" and said it is "highly problematic" that "we became part of a statistic of too many Americans — those who have experienced or been part of or connected to a mass shooting." Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said on social media that he was “praying for Kansas City.”   Israel-Hamas War All eyes are on Rafah as Israel prepares for a ground invasion into the Gazan city, where an estimated 1.4 million civilians are sheltering. Here’s the latest: - Israeli special forces entered Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza this morning, claiming they have "credible intelligence" that Hamas has held hostages there. Medics say Israeli snipers have killed people who've tried to leave the hospital. - Israel launched "extensive" strikes in Lebanon on Wednesday in response to a deadly rocket attack on an Israeli city. Israel's strikes killed 12 people, including children, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency. - The White House has expressed worries that Israel is not prioritizing the delivery of U.S.-funded humanitarian aid to Gaza. President Biden has shielded thousands of Palestinians in the U.S. from deportation for the next 18 months. - International efforts to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas have stalled, following an accusation by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Hamas' demands are "delusional."   More Stories [A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifts off from launch pad LC-39A at the Kennedy Space Center ]( The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifts off at the Kennedy Space Center. Some lawmakers say the intel is concerning enough to be made public. Meanwhile, two people familiar with Special Counsel Robert Hur's interview with President Biden told NBC News that Hur never mentioned the death of Biden's son Beau — and it was the president — not Hur — who brought it up.   Must-Reads [Travis Kelce yelling at Andy Reid]( Out of Bounds His outburst at the Super Bowl spurred immediate reactions (and memes), and now Travis Kelce is breaking his silence on that moment.
