(Getty Images) Moment of Truth The Supreme Courtâs expected to hear oral arguments today for a case that could have sweeping ramifications for the upcoming presidential election. Hereâs a look at the details. The case at hand: The justices are weighing whether Donald Trump can be excluded from the ballot using the 14th Amendment because of his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. Though the argument stems from a case out of Colorado, the courtâs ruling could have far-reaching effects. Similar arguments have been made in at least 11 other states, including Oregon and Massachusetts. A new sense of urgency: The court agreed, at the former presidentâs request, to expedite the case because of Coloradoâs upcoming primary on March 5. Legal scholars have also urged SCOTUS to quickly issue a definitive ruling. âVoters risk being disenfranchised if they vote for a candidate ultimately found to be ineligible, and the country could be thrown into chaos if the Court does not resolve the question and leaves it to Congress to resolve on Jan. 6, 2025,â Rick Hasen tells us. As we await this consequential decision, hereâs a deeper dive into the case [and the legal theory behind it](.
