(Menahem KAHANA / AFP) On the Record Approximately 115 hostages remain in captivity in Gaza since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, according to Israel. Meanwhile, the death count in Gaza is estimated to be over 18,000, most of them women and children, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry. This week, Israel clashed with Hezbollah, stoking fears of a wider conflict, and the U.N. responded to the “catastrophic” humanitarian crisis in Gaza by demanding an immediate ceasefire. Biden's national security adviser Jake Sullivan met with Israel's president this morning as Washington urged Israel to end its wide-scale assault on the Strip and commence a more targeted approach.
