The latest from the House and SCOTUS. [For the best experience, read in browser.]( [Wake-Up Call] [by Katie Couric Media] December 14, 2023 Good morning. First off, we're breaking down [the upcoming Supreme Court cases to watch](, plus the latest on the House impeachment inquiry into President Biden. After that, we’ll jump over to Hollywood, where [Oprah’s setting the record straight]( about a frequent source of speculation and [I interviewed the cast and crew of Netflix’s hit new movie](. All that, plus [7 books that’ll take you on a mental vacation](, coming up.   In the News [Supreme Court on dark blue sky]( Getty Images On the Docket Two big cases that have snaked their way through appeals are officially headed to the Supreme Court. One could have major implications for former President Trump and the hundreds of rioters who’ve been charged after the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6. The other has the potential to dramatically restrict mifepristone, a critical drug that’s used in half of all abortions in the U.S. Here’s [everything you need to know about these blockbuster cases](, including when we can expect a decision. Jason Smith (R-MO), Chairman of the House Oversight Committee Rep. James Comer (R-KY) and Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) speak to reporters after the House voted to formally authorize the impeachment inquiry into U.S. President Joe Biden, in Statuary Hall]( Reps James R. Comer, center, and Jim Jordan, right, are leading the inquiry. (Getty Images) In motion: The Republican-led House voted yesterday to authorize its impeachment inquiry into President Biden. The 221-212 vote was split along party lines. The GOP's investigation of Biden and his family has revealed no sign of high crimes, but the GOP had hoped to depose Hunter Biden if he failed to appear for his deposition earlier in the day. Hunter not only showed, he spoke to the press. "In the depths of my addiction, I was extremely irresponsible with my finances," he said. "But to suggest that is grounds for an impeachment inquiry is beyond the absurd. It's shameless." Hope on the horizon: The Federal Reserve kept interest rates steady in its last policy decision of 2023 and predicted it'll cut the cost of borrowing three times in 2024, assuming quarter percentage point increments. The Dow Jones Industrial Average leaped more than 400 points in response, and markets appeared to anticipate an even more optimistic 1.5% in rate reductions in the coming year. On the lookout: The University of Arizona is boosting security following the "attempted abduction" of a female student and other disturbing incidents near campus. One victim told police she was followed by a vehicle at around 8 pm on December 7 before the male driver got out and grabbed her. She screamed and struggled, and her attacker let go. Another student reported being followed by a similar vehicle, and another said she was groped near campus. Suspended: Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green has been suspended from the NBA indefinitely. Green spun around during the Warriors' game against the Phoenix Suns and hit Suns center Jusuf Nurkić to the ground with his arm. He was ejected for a flagrant 2 foul. “I do apologize to Jusuf because I didn’t intend to hit him,” Green said afterward. The NBA said it took "Green’s repeated history of unsportsmanlike acts” into account.   In Conversation [Katie Couric, Julianne Moore, Charles Melton, Natalie Portman, Samy Burch and Todd Haynes]( Getty Images By now, you’ve probably watched (or at least heard about) the new film May December — which is really good, BTW. This star-studded drama — which is [loosely inspired by a disturbing true story]( — features Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman, and Charles Melton. [I caught up with the cast and crew]( to discuss the challenges of portraying such flawed, nuanced characters. Don't miss our fascinating convo. [CHECK IT OUT](   Extra Credit [Oprah Winfrey poses with her hands on her hips in a sparkly purple gown]( Getty Images "Done with the shaming": After months of speculation and decades of public fascination with her figure, Oprah revealed she uses weight-loss medication. We've got more on [why she finally broke her silence](. Faux pas: Zara just pulled a clothing campaign after critics deemed it insensitive to people in Gaza. Here’s [more on the backlash](, plus a look back at other major fashion fiascos. Page break: You don't need a travel itinerary to take a mental vacation — just a good book! [These delightful escapist reads]( will transport you to your happy place. Brighten up: Struggling with dark spots? Consider more targeted skincare to address them. [Dime Beauty’s dark spot corrector]( combines potent ingredients like tranexamic acid and niacinamide. It’s so popular that it regularly sells out.   Skin Deep [Katie Couric displays her eczema]( KCM I’ve had eczema ever since I was a little girl, and as I've gotten older, it's started to flare up again. I also deal with allergic contact dermatitis — safe to say, I have to be careful about what I put on my face. My search for treatment led me to Cheryl Lee Eberting, MD.
