What caused Israel's intelligence failure? [For the best experience, read in browser.]( December 5, 2023 Nearly two months after Hamas’ attack, a shocking investigation has revealed the depths of Israel’s intelligence failure. I spoke to NYT reporters Ronen Bergman and Adam Goldman about [why Israel failed to prevent the Oct. 7 attack](. Then [I sat down with the family of 4-year-old Abigail Mor Edan](, the first American hostage to return home from Gaza, for an exclusive interview. As always, thanks for waking up with us.   In the News [palestinian militants on a truck]( Palestinian militants of the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades move towards the Erez crossing between Israel and the northern Gaza Strip on Oct. 7, 2023. (Getty Images) Grave Miscalculation Israeli officials and global experts alike have characterized the Oct. 7 attack as a massive intelligence failure. Now, a bombshell report by The New York Times suggests it may have been even more catastrophic than previously thought. The Times reveals that Israeli intelligence had direct access to Hamas’ attack plans — contained inside a 40-page document the Israelis labeled “Jericho Wall” — for more than a year before it took place. Even more devastating, Hamas reportedly followed the blueprint “with shocking precision” on Oct. 7. So [why didn’t Israel act on this information](? I spoke with Ronen Bergman and Adam Goldman, the reporters behind this stunning investigation, to get the answer to this critical question. Nikki Haley, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie have qualified for the fourth GOP presidential debate. The foursome will duke it out in Tuscaloosa while Donald Trump, who remains the Republican frontrunner, attends a fundraiser in Florida. [North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum has dropped out of the race](, and with less than six weeks until the Iowa caucuses, DeSantis and Haley are vying for second place behind the former president. Supremes seem split: The Supreme Court is grappling with arguments over a $6 billion bankruptcy settlement for Purdue Pharma. The Sackler family agreed to pay the sum last year in admission of its role in selling OxyContin, and in return received immunity from future civil cases. The Justice Department says the deal represented an overreach by the court, and upended the "the nuts and bolts" of bankruptcy law. Alarming stunt: A YouTuber who ejected himself from a plane mid-air and let the aircraft crash to the ground for views has been jailed for six months. Trevor Jacob, 30, posted a video of the incident — which he filmed using a selfie stick — back in 2021. At the time, he implied it was an accident, but he later admitted in a plea agreement that the stunt was part of a sponsorship deal. The weight loss drug race: Drug companies are falling over each other to buy up smaller businesses that are developing potential weight loss products. Yesterday, Swiss drugmaker Roche snapped up the California-based biotech Carmot Therapeutics for $2.7 billion, signaling its entry to a market that's expected to be worth at least $100 billion by 2030 — and far more still if Medicaid begins to cover weight loss drugs.   In Their Own Words More than 100 hostages that were held hostage in the Gaza Strip were released as part of the weeklong ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. This included 4-year-old Abigail Mor Edan, who was the first American to return home. In an exclusive interview, I spoke with Abigail's family about the tragic loss of her parents, [how she’s finding strength]( in the outpouring of public support, and what President Biden said in a phone call following her release.   Must-Reads [Theresa Nist and Gerry Turner]( Never Too Late The Golden Bachelor couple Gerry and Theresa are off the market, but they have some wisdom to share about dating later in life.
