The House has lost its speaker. [For the best experience, read in browser.]( October 4, 2023 To say yesterday was a dramatic day in politics would be an understatement. For the first time in history, the House of Representatives removed its speaker, and weâve got more on this unprecedented fiasco. Then, we dive into Donald Trump's contentious time in court. After that, weâll continue our October coverage by [answering your questions about mammograms]( and highlighting [ways to support breast cancer research](. Thanks for waking up with us! In the News [Kevin McCarthy]( Republican Kevin McCarthy has been ousted as House speaker. (Getty Images / KCM) Now What? After bitter infighting, the GOP-led House voted on Tuesday to oust Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his post, leaving the chamber leaderless. Hereâs what went down, and why the problems are just beginning. Making history: In an effort led by GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz, the House voted 216-210 to strip McCarthy of his gavel, with eight Republicans joining all Democrats. It was unprecedented: No House speaker has ever been removed from the position before. McCarthyâs own (un)doing? McCarthy lowered the threshold to bring a motion to remove him as leader from five votes to one as a condition to secure enough support to become speaker in January. Though he turned to Democrats to keep the government open just days ago, he refused to make concessions for them to keep him in power. He told CNN of the Republicans who voted against him: âYeah, a lot of them I helped get elected so I probably should have picked someone else.â Uncharted territory: The chamber must elect a new leader before it can tackle the spending legislation needed to avoid a government shutdown on Nov. 17 â and McCarthy has said he won't run again. House Republicans will hold internal elections to nominate a replacement on October 11. Majority Leader Steve Scalise would be a natural choice, but he's been managing some tricky health issues lately. The Washington Post reported last week that some hardliners are keen on Majority Whip Tom Emmer, but there's still no clear candidate at this point. Watch this space... More Stories [Trump walking out of court]( Getty Images Stern reprimand: The judge in the civil fraud suit against Donald Trump ordered him to delete a social media post attacking one of his clerks and issued a gag order on posting about his staff. Personal attacks are "unacceptable, inappropriate and I will not tolerate them,â he said â noting that Trump's post was reportedly emailed to "millions of other recipients." Trump, who looked straight ahead as the judge announced the ban, had claimed on Truth Social that the clerk was Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's "girlfriend". No connection between the pair is known. University shooting: Five people were shot at Morgan State University in Baltimore last night in an attack that had students sheltering in place for hours while a SWAT team searched the dorms. No suspect was apprehended, and it's unclear whether more than one shooter was involved. The police commissioner said the scene "remains active." The victims, whose injuries are not life-threatening, are all between 18 and 22 years old. More relief: President Biden has canceled another $9 billion in student loan debt just days after payments restarted. The move will affect a further 125,000 borrowers, and reflects the White House's commitment to provide âfixesâ to a âbroken" system â despite the Supreme Court's defeat of the Biden administration's hallmark student loan forgiveness program back in June. Grimes sues Musk: Grimes has sued Elon Musk for parental rights, Page Six reports. The singer-songwriter filed a petition last week to establish a parental relationship regarding the pair's three children, known as X, Y, and Tau. Such petitions are a way to identify a child's legal parents and can form the basis for child custody or child support orders â though Grimes hasn't requested either so far.
