A warning for every woman. [For the best experience, read in browser.]( September 27, 2023 It's World Dense Breast Day, and we're marking the occasion with [a warning every woman should read](. We're also investigating [an alarming trend among baby boomers]( that's only getting worse. Then we've got the scoop on [the shocking reality show everyone is talking about]( (and why it may not be shocking for the reasons you'd expect). All that, plus [terrific tips for pickleball players](, coming right up!   In the News [A Doctor looks at a mammogram scan on a computer screen]( Shutterstock A Dense Topic Everyone knows the importance of getting an annual mammogram, but is that enough? For the 43% of women who have dense breast tissue — which includes me! — it may not be. This tissue makes it especially difficult to spot cancer, and [the consequences can be fatal](. How many diagnoses are we missing as a result? It's a "sobering question," according to Matt Covington, MD, an assistant professor of radiology at the University of Utah and Huntsman Cancer Institute. "I recently estimated that screening mammography failed to detect 267,000 cancers in 2021 in the United States," he says. "That’s a large number that likely accounts for many — if not most — cancers that will metastasize before being detected." But there's good news: In a can't-miss essay, Dr. Covington shares [the supplemental screenings that can save the lives of women with dense breasts]( — and the national legislation that could make these tests easier to get. According to the ruling, the former president and his adult sons also provided lenders and insurers with false statements that both over and under-valued his assets, and repeatedly engaged in fraud. The Trump Organization’s business certification has been revoked, and AG Letitia James, having won on her first claim, is seeking $250 million in damages. The civil trial is set to kick off next week. Collision course: The Senate voted yesterday to approve a bipartisan stopgap bill to avoid a government shutdown come midnight on Saturday. The legislation would fund the government until November 17, and set aside $6.15 billion for Ukraine and $5.99 billion in disaster aid. There's still no guarantee it'd pass in the House, which voted to advance a package of appropriations bills that have little chance of survival in the Senate. Landmark case: The U.S. government and 17 states are suing Amazon, kicking off a long-awaited antitrust battle. The e-commerce giant is accused of monopolizing vast areas of online retail, promoting itself at the expense of businesses that rely on its platform to distribute their products. Amazon is “squarely focused on preventing anyone else from gaining that same critical mass of customers,” FTC Chair Lina Khan told reporters per CNN. Strike watch: President Biden made a historic visit to the Michigan picket line to support striking autoworkers Tuesday, telling them: "You deserve what you earned, and you've earned a hell of a lot more than you're getting paid now." Meanwhile, in Hollywood, writers return to work today following a deal with movie and TV makers that will (among other things) increase pay minimums and offer securities regarding the use of AI-generated material. Over in Las Vegas however, hospitality workers have voted to authorize a strike against major resorts on the Strip.
