Another union prepares to strike. [For the best experience, read in browser.]( September 12, 2023 Good morning! Does your breakfast need a pick-me-up? My culinary companion [Jake Cohen’s twist on French toast]( will knock your socks off. Over in the news, fresh Covid boosters are almost here, and we’ve got the details on [when the shots could become available](. Then, we’ve got the rundown on [Drew Barrymore’s controversial decision]( to defy Hollywood strikers — but first, we’ve got the details on why auto workers could be grabbing their picket signs. Thanks for waking up with us!   In the News [Man wearing a hat and sunglasses holds up blue sign that says ''Stand with autoworkers!'']( Getty Images Let's Make a Deal? About 150,000 auto workers are prepared to go on strike this week. Here’s what they’re demanding — and how it could make buying a car difficult. What are workers asking for? Shawn Fain, president of the United Auto Workers union, has threatened to strike if General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis don’t offer a 46% pay raise over four years. Under that increase, a top-scale assembly plant worker would go from making $32 to about $47 per hour. Other demands include a shorter work week and cost-of-living pay rises. What are automakers offering? The companies have rejected the union’s demands as too lavish. Instead, both GM and Ford have proposed a cumulative 10% pay raise over a four-year contract, while Stellantis has offered 14.5% more over the same period. How could the strike impact you? Experts agree that a prolonged strike could mean a drop in inventory and fewer car deals. To make matters worse, automakers have already been struggling to keep up their stock following a drop in supply during the pandemic. If an agreement isn't reached by Thursday, union members will strike, which could cost the industry as much as $5 billion in just 10 days. Stay tuned for what’s sure to be a high-stakes fight right up to the very end.   More Stories [Mounted CCTV shot of Danelo Cavalcante]( Getty Images The pressure is on: Danelo Cavalcante, the convicted killer who escaped from Chester County Prison in Pennsylvania nearly two weeks ago, is still on the loose — and apparently, now armed. Cavalcante was spotted in Chester County’s South Coventry Township last night, prompting officials to send an emergency alert to locals that read: “Residents in the area are asked to lock all external doors and windows, secure vehicles, and remain indoors.” Catastrophe in Libya: Around 2,000 people are reportedly dead and thousands are missing after Storm Daniel triggered devastating flooding in eastern Libya. Daniel dumped so much rainfall after making landfall on Sunday that two dams in Derna, a city with a population of around 100,000, collapsed. Much of the area was submerged, and some residents appear to have been swept away by the water. Trump legal latest: Donald Trump has filed motions asking for the dismissal of most of the 13 charges against him in the [Georgia election meddling case](. This comes alongside the news that the former president has asked the judge overseeing the [federal election meddling case brought by Jack Smith]( to recuse herself. Trump claims that previous comments Judge Tanya Chutkan has made in court suggest bias against him. Health buzz: A new meta-analysis published by JAMA indicates that colorectal cancer screening with sigmoidoscopy could extend patients' life expectancy by around 3 months (though it's not clear whether other common screening tests lead to longer lives). And speaking of gut health, a study published by the BMJ Monday suggests that turmeric could be as effective for treating indigestion as the drug omeprazole.   Must-Reads [Drew Barrymore]( The Show Goes On Drew Barrymore’s decision to bring back her talk show is proving to be quite a controversial one.
