What we know about the earthquake in Morocco. [For the best experience, read in browser.]( September 11, 2023 Good morning. Today we’re honoring the lives lost on September 11 and sharing [ways to support those impacted]( by the attacks. We’ve also got the latest on the earthquake in Morocco that’s claimed thousands of lives. Thanks for waking up with us.   In the News [People look at rainbow over muddy desert festival]( The aftermath of the earthquake in Ouirgane, Morocco. (Getty Images) Searching for Survivors The powerful earthquake that shook Morocco late Friday is already the country's deadliest in 60 years, and officials expect the death toll to rise even further. Here’s the latest: What happened? The epicenter of the 6.8-magnitude earthquake was in the High Atlas mountain range, about 45 miles outside of Marrakech. Most of the fatalities have been in this remote region, where families are still searching for survivors. At least 2,122 have been reported dead so far, and more than 2,421 injured. Heavy boulders are blocking some of the roads up to the villages worst affected, meaning the lifting equipment needed to help the search can't reach those most in need. How to help: Several organizations have mobilized to support the more than 300,000 civilians affected. You can donate to UNICEF [here](, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies [here](, and check out a list of other non-profits doing their part to help the victims of this disaster [right here](.   Never Forget [NYC skyline including twin towers]( Getty Images It’s hard to believe that today marks the 22nd anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. We reconnected with some of the people I encountered while first reporting on the tragedy, including [a man whose father died saving others](, [a woman who lost her fiancé and brother]( in the towers, and [one of the first eyewitnesses]( to see the planes strike. Sept. 11 became a federal holiday known as Patriot Day in 2001, and it's been an annually recognized National Day of Service and Remembrance since 2009. There are many ways to give back to those impacted by the attacks, whether it be through donating or volunteering. [Here are some good places to start](.   More Stories [Jimmy Buffett on stage in 1976]( Getty Images Today in sports: Novak Djokovic beat Daniil Medvedev to win the U.S. Open men’s final on Sunday, extending his record grand slam titles to 24. “I’m really living my childhood dream to compete at the highest level in the sport that has given me and my family so much,” Djokovic said after the match. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, Luis Rubiales has finally resigned as Spanish soccer president following his unwanted kiss with World Cup winner Jennifer Hermoso back in August. Breaking: North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un is currently on a train to Russia, according to South Korean media. If the reports are true — and they are yet to be confirmed by Russia or North Korea —this is Kim Jong Un's first foreign trip since the Covid-19 pandemic. A U.S. official told CBS that the pair are likely to discuss the prospect of North Korea supplying Russia with weapons to support its invasion of Ukraine. Suspended: Michigan State University football coach Mel Tucker has been suspended without pay amid an investigation into a reported accusation of sexual harassment. According to USA Today, Tucker allegedly masturbated and made sexual comments during a phone call with Brenda Tracy, a prominent rape survivor and activist. Writing to the Title IX investigator, Tucker admitted masturbating on the call, but characterized it as consensual “phone sex.” The hunt continues: The manhunt for the escaped Pennsylvania prisoner Danelo Cavalcante has entered its 12th day. Cavalcante, 34, reportedly stole a van, skipped a police perimeter, and changed his appearance over the weekend. Per state police, the convicted killer is now clean-shaven and wearing a yellow or green hooded sweatshirt, black baseball-style hat, green prison pants, and white shoes. According to CNN, Cavalcante has been attempting to contact acquaintances in and around the Phoenixville area.   A Closer Look The migrant crisis is putting a terrible burden on cities across the country, and it's clear something needs to be done. (I’m sure people living in towns along the border are cynically asking, “What took so long?”) In [a persuasive editorial for The New York Times](, Mike Bloomberg argues that the time has come to set aside our political differences and come up with a solution — before the problem further erodes the fabric of our country.
