Cymbalista, the owner of a consulting firm in New York City, told us about the two weeks she’s spent at the festival. “The weather was mild and beautiful — then the sky opened,” she says. Two days of rain turned the gypsum and silica of the Black Rock Desert into the “muddiest peanut-butter-like paste.” People went barefoot or covered their shoes in bags, but couldn’t walk more than a few minutes at a time. “We had two people who strayed far from the camp, and it took them six or seven hours to walk back.” Despite the hiccups, attendees came together in inspiring ways. “Some people didn’t have enough food, so stations cropped up where you could get a sandwich if you’re hungry. There was a whole row of people who were set up for hours to help people move through the mud.
