How to time your flu shot. [For the best experience, read in browser.]( August 28, 2023 Good morning. With fall — and flu season — right around the corner, the CDC has released its annual recommendations, and [we're eyeing up one key change.]( Then, we're taking a look at the less-fun side of the sport taking the country by storm: Here's [why pickleball is causing so many injuries](. Speaking of inconvenient pain, Dr. B discusses [why sex hurts sometimes](, and we're breaking down [the laser treatment that can address one of those causes](. Let's begin.   In the News [A sign that says, ''flu shots today'']( (Getty Images) New Recommendations After an unusually early and intense flu season last September, you may be contemplating getting your shot ASAP this year. Here’s why you [might not want to rush.]( Who should get the flu shot? The CDC recommends that everyone over the age of six months who doesn’t have a “severe, life-threatening” allergy to the flu shot should get it. This only gets more important as you age — an estimated 70 to 85 percent of flu-related deaths are among over-65s. Are there any new recommendations? People with egg allergies can now get the flu shot after the CDC concluded that severe reactions that were previously associated with it are “unlikely.” (Canada and Europe have already come to a similar conclusion.) When should you get it? September and October are still the best times to get the shot, according to the CDC’s latest guidance. Experts say this timing is key because it will help ensure your protection against the virus during peak flu season, which is generally between December and February. We have more details on [which flu vaccine may be right for you.]( [READ MORE]( PASS THIS STORY ALONG: mailto:?subject=Check%20out%20this%20story%20from%20Wake-Up%20Call%21&body=https%3A%2F%2Fkatiecouric.com%2Fhealth%2Fflu-shot-new-cdc-guidelines%2F   More Stories [silhouettes of people walking past the dollar general store in Jacksonville]( Getty Images Deadly shooting in Jacksonville: The FBI is conducting a hate crime investigation after a white gunman took a swastika-emblazoned assault rifle and a handgun to a Dollar General store in Jacksonville, Florida on Saturday, where he shot three Black people dead. The victims have been identified as Angela Michelle Carr, 52, Anolt Joseph “AJ” Laguerre Jr., 19, and Jarrald De’Shaun Gallion, 29. Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters has described the shooter, 21-year-old Ryan Christopher Palmeter, as a racist "maniac." Palmeter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Weather watch: Tropical Storm Idalia is due to strengthen into "major hurricane intensity" as it barrels toward Florida's Gulf Coast. Idalia is currently stirring up 65 mph winds off the western tip of Cuba, but is set to be a Category 3 hurricane by the time it makes landfall near the Big Bend of Florida on Wednesday morning. “Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion,” the hurricane center warns. Eyes on Virginia: Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin and his team are hoping to secure GOP control of the General Assembly this fall, and their agenda includes an abortion ban at 15 weeks. As the last state in the South without major limits on abortion rights, Virginia's set to become a key battleground. Per NBC News, Youngkin's betting that since his proposed ban is more moderate than those seen elsewhere, it won't trigger a spike in Democratic votes. A league of her own: Superstar gymnast Simone Biles has made history yet again, winning a record 8th all-round national title at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships. At 26, she's the oldest woman ever to secure that victory. She's broken the record she shared with Alfred Jochim, who won his seventh all-around gold medal in 1933. “I think it feels really special,” Biles told NBC. “I don’t think about numbers, I think about my performance."   Must-Reads [Foods arranged in the shape of a brain: Avocado, spinach, onions, almonds, etc.]( Smart Snacks The term “brain food” gets thrown around, but there is a diet that’s meant to support your noggin. But even before he took the job, Barker and his deadpan humor were fixtures in the entertainment industry. Barker had hosted game shows — or, as he called them, "audience-participation games" — since the 1950s. Before that, he served as a Navy fighter pilot for a couple of years at the end of World War 2. He was a dedicated animal rights activist from the early seventies until his death this weekend at 99 years old. "Bob Barker was a television legend who was very committed to the Hollywood community as well as being a huge proponent of animal welfare," said Walk of Fame producer Ana Martinez. "He will be missed."   [Know it all, and help your friends catch up, too. Share Wake-Up Call and you'll earn some superb swag.]( Thanks for reading Wake-Up Call and being part of our community!
