The death toll has already surpassed that of the 2018 Camp Fire in Northern California, which killed 85 people and destroyed the town of Paradise. It's expected to rise as many people remain unaccounted for, and cadaver dogs are still searching the island's scorched ruins. On pause: Hawaiian officials — and even some celebrities, like Honolulu native Jason Momoa — are urging tourists not to go to Maui right now due to ongoing recovery efforts. “Do not convince yourself that your presence is needed on an island that is suffering this deeply,” the actor wrote on Instagram. Atlanta prosecutor Fani Willis has called two key witnesses — including former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan — to appear before a grand jury tomorrow, signaling that her probe into the former president's [alleged attempt to overturn the 2020 election in the state]( is nearing its conclusion. Per Axios, Willis is expected to invoke Georgia's powerful racketeering law (known as RICO), which could make life particularly difficult for the defense. A charging decision is expected by September 1. Free press firestorm: A Kansas police department has been widely condemned for raiding a local newspaper — The Marion County Record — and a publisher's home. Record co-owner Joan Meyer, 98, collapsed and died afterward. Her son, Record publisher Eric Meyer, has attributed her death to stress caused by the raid. Meyer believes the raid was prompted by an article about a local restaurant owner. Dozens of news organizations, including the New York Times, Washington Post, and CNN have condemned the search and called for the return of seized materials. L.A. mall raid: A mob of around 50 criminals swarmed a mall in Los Angeles on Saturday, making off with about $100,000 in stolen goods. Police say the robbers, who used bear spray to neutralize security guards as they escaped, have left the community with "a loss of feeling safe." “The LAPD will exhaust all efforts to bring those responsible into custody and seek criminal prosecution,” the department said. "Time to move on": Mark Zuckerberg has poured cold water over the buzz around a potential "cage fight" between himself and Elon Musk. “Elon won’t confirm a date, then says he needs surgery, and now asks to do a practice round in my backyard instead,” he posted on Meta's social media platform Threads. “If Elon ever gets serious about a real date and official event, he knows how to reach me.
