These are the new hot spots. [For the best experience, read in browser.]( July 24, 2023 Certain parts of the country are in for another scorcher of a week — places that just so happen to be where many people spend their golden years. We’re exploring [how the climate crisis could impact your retirement](. (If that’s still years away, we’ve got details on the future of remote work and [why we may never fully return to the office](.) Then, we kick off Shark Week coverage with [what we get wrong about shark attacks](. We’re also leaning into National Tequila Day by [taste-testing celebrity-owned spirits](. Let's begin.   In the News [couple driving while the sun sets]( Getty Images Rethinking Retirement Are you looking to spend your golden years in Phoenix? Or are you dreaming of packing up and moving to the Sunshine State? [You’ll want to read this first](. These traditional retirement meccas may not be so attractive in the years to come. We break down why — the sky-high temperatures this summer are only part of it — and have a list of other locales you may want to consider instead. Greek authorities have evacuated 19,000 people off the holiday island of Rhodes as an enormous wildfire rages, sending the tourism industry — and thousands of families' holiday plans — into disarray. A travel agent told the Associated Press that “there were 80-90 people cramming into 50-seater buses,” and that authorities are "overwhelmed" by the scale of the threat. Ready to rumble: Seven Republican presidential candidates now qualify for the August debate stage. Former President Donald Trump, former VP Mike Pence, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie have met the polling requirements — and all but Pence say they meet the fundraising criteria as well. (Psst — we've got the [lowdown on all these candidates, plus some long shots, here](.) Paying tribute: President Biden is expected to establish a national monument honoring Emmett Till and his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, on Tuesday. There are already several sites recognizing Till in Mississippi, where the 14-year-old was savagely tortured and killed by white men in 1955. The new monument will comprise three protected sites in Illinois, Emmett's home state, and Mississippi, where he was murdered. X marks the spot: The iconic Twitter logo changed from a bird to an "X" early this morning. Elon Musk posted a brief video of a flickering "X" on Sunday, then replied "yes" when a user asked whether it signified a new logo. Musk said the "X" is meant to "embody the imperfections in us all that make us unique," adding opaquely: “And soon we shall bid adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds.”   By the Numbers [Margot Robbie in Barbie] Courtesy Warner Bros. Let's take a look: 18.5 million: The number of people who headed to the movies this weekend to take part in the cultural moment known as "Barbenheimer." $155 million: How much Barbie raked in domestically, making it the biggest movie of the year, and the top domestic opening for a movie directed by a woman. $80.5 million: Ticket sales in the U.S. for Oppenheimer's debut — well ahead of the $50 million it was expected to earn.   Must-Reads [sharks]( Deep Dive Sharks have a bit of a bad rap.
