In the News [Attorney General Merrick Garland speaks at the DOJ]( Attorney General Merrick Garland speaks at a press conference. (Getty Images) Attorney General Merrick Garland is pushing back against what he describes as an unprecedented assault on the Justice Department. In a speech on Thursday, he decried the "conspiracy theories and dangerous falsehoods" that threaten officials ahead of November's election. "It is dangerous to target and intimidate individual employees of this department simply for doing their jobs," he said at a conference for hundreds of DOJ workers. "And it is outrageous that you have to face these unfounded attacks because you are doing what is right and upholding the rule of law." Though Garland didn't mention any names, former President Trump has repeatedly gone after the agency, including during Tuesday's presidential debate, when he falsely claimed that the Biden administration weaponized the DOJ to bring cases against him. Trump has also vowed to use the department to jail scores of political opponents if he takes back the White House. But Garland emphasized in his remarks that he and others would "fiercely protect" the DOJ's independence and not allow the department to be used "as a political weapon."
