Biden's SCOTUS overhaul [For the best experience, read in browser.]( July 30, 2024 Good morning! We’ll start off in politics with [President Biden’s dramatic vision for overhauling the Supreme Court]( — and whether experts think it’s possible — and do a deep dive into [how A.I. could influence the election](. Over in health, my friend Dr. Mark Pochapin breaks down the new blood test for colorectal cancer, and my pal Allie Signorelli gets real about [the challenges of living with early-onset Parkinson’s](. We’ll close out with [our favorite finds from lululemon’s sale section](. Read on...   In the News [A portrait of the Supreme Court]( Getty Images "No One Is Above the Law" President Biden is pushing for three key changes to the Supreme Court. In a Washington Post op-ed published on Monday, he called for a constitutional amendment limiting presidents' immunity, implementing term limits on justices, and stipulating an enforceable code of ethics. We took a closer look at Biden’s proposals and whether they’re feasible given a divided Congress, with [input from legal eagle Neal Katyal]( and other experts. These calls to reform the court have been growing louder ever since two conservative justices, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, became embroiled in ethics controversies. Last month, I spoke to the New York Times’s Jodi Kantor [about why Alito’s provocative flags caused so much uproar](. Roy Cooper has removed himself from consideration as Kamala Harris's running mate. Meanwhile, potential candidate Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear's record on abortion is being scrutinized, as some advocates fear he's not gone far enough to protect reproductive rights. Protests have surged in Venezuela since the autocratic President Nicolás Maduro was declared the winner of the election, despite the opposition's claim that the result was rigged. The U.S. says it has "serious concerns." A federal judge has blocked parts of Florida's "Stop Woke Act," a bill Gov. Ron DeSantis signed to prevent workplace training that suggests someone is privileged or disadvantaged based on race, nationality, color, or sex. McDonald's saw a sales dip in the second quarter for the first time since 2020, with same-store sales down 1% versus last year. Customers have been hit hard by inflation, and fast food stores have seen some of the sharpest price hikes in recent years. Simone Biles will compete in all four gymnastics events in the women's team final at the Olympics today, including vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise. The men's triathlon has been postponed, due to pollution in the River Seine.   In Focus The FDA has approved Shield, a blood test that screens for colon cancer, after a March study found it was 83% effective at detecting colorectal cancers. You all know screenings are a cause I'm passionate about, so I asked my friend Dr. Mark Pochapin, Director of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at NYU Langone Health, about this new development. "Any test is better than no test. The issue is, with cancer screening, you want to find it early, when it’s stage I and the most curable. The blood test is just fair in detecting stage I cancer — it has a 65% detection rate. I also don’t like that the study put all three stages of cancer together to get an 83.1% detection rate. An important thing to note is the blood test is not going to pick up polyps. It’s also only meant for patients with average risk, who don’t have a history of colon cancer or polyps and are not experiencing symptoms. But, like the Fecal immunochemical test (FIT) or Cologuard, this is a great addition for people who don’t want to get a colonoscopy. Like any technology, we hope this will be the start and improve over time."   Must-Reads [A robot wearing a suit standing at a podium behind the American flag ]( Eye On A.I.
